How times have changed

Yes. I was at that game. I think the final score was 17-10. It was a very typical Fulmer game against a team we should have been blowing out. He always had his slow tempo, trying to control the clock with very few snaps and possessions, really long drives, but sometimes just couldn’t punch it into the end zone. That era was so frustrating because we could never get our back-ups any experience. Teams that we should have been beating 59-10, we were beating 24-7.
I was there also. I've felt that game was the beginning of the end for Fulmer and solidified my long time believe that he just wasn't a very bright in game coach. Ainge took the team down the field for a TD first drive and then another long drive for a FG to quickly go up 10-0. Then Fulmer cashed in whatever crappy deal he made to agree to give Rick Clausen co-starter status. He put him in for most of the rest of the game and the offense completely went to crap. Clausen was a terrible passer. Couldn't throw it 20 yards without it fluttering into the turf. I'll never forget the USCe loss that year. Second half defense gave the offense the ball inside the USCe 40 three possessions in a row and the great Clausen offensive machine lost yardage every time and I think punted all three times. But Fulmer kept trotting him out there game after game.

Drive 1: FG, Ainge goes 2/3 for 23 yards
Drive 2: TD, Ainge goes 1/2 for 3 yards and the TD
Drive 3: Missed FG, Clausen goes 4/5 for 29 yards
Drive 4: Interception, Ainge goes 1/3 for 26 yards and the pick (UAB gets FG on ensuing drive)
Drive 5: Punt, Ainge goes 1/3 for 5 yards
Drive 6: TD, Clausen goes 6/8 for 73 yards and the TD
Drive 7: Downs, Clausen goes 3/5 for 45 yards
Drive 8: Interception, Clausen goes 3/5 for 17 yards and the pick
Drive 9: Interception, Ainge goes 0/3 for 0 yards and the pick
Drive 10: End of game, Clausen goes 1/1 for 53 yards

Ainge: 5 of 14, 57 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs
Clausen: 17 of 24, 217 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

Ainge's 1st pick was a horribly overthrown ball (37:16), 2nd was staring down his receiver and floated the thing that was easily picked (1:39:20). Clausen's was tipped twice by his FB before it was picked (1:30:59), not a great throw but certainly shouldn't have been picked.

Neither was great, and probably not even good, but Clausen was definitely better than Ainge that year. Bolded is who was better in each game. Both had 2 games each where the other didn't play. Clausen performed better in his 2 solo games than Ainge did in his. And performed better in 3 of the 5 they both played.

Defensive secondary is still abysmal, paid a costly price last week in conference play, not sure if Martinez is capable of putting an SEC caliber secondary on the field, not sure why Heupel puts up with such mediocrity
Martinez coaches corners. Banks coaches safeties. Ga picked on the 4th CB (2 out with injuries)

Dang. Discredited by well researched facts. Seriously, well done. I still am of the opinion if Fulmer had made Ainge the clear cut #1 all year, he may have performed much better week to week and produced more wins.
