How times have changed

Defensive secondary is still abysmal, paid a costly price last week in conference play, not sure if Martinez is capable of putting an SEC caliber secondary on the field, not sure why Heupel puts up with such mediocrity
I do not question Martinez as much as I question a program that has so many critical injuries in multiple positions.

Do you question Garner, who’s unit is crippled, or Ellarbee, who’s top player has bench on the been all year?

It was a different landscape in college football, and he definitely overstayed his welcome. We can agree on that.

But to try and do everything you can to say he wasn’t a good coach is plain silly and goes against the facts. Great recruiter, 2 sec titles, I believe 7 east titles, a natty, sbd .750 win percentage. Along with a spot in the college football HOF. The results are the results no matter how you pick them apart.
Did you go to Columbus last year?

I know that's a weird unrelated question

I know there were a lot of people pissed off after spending money to make the trip. Good for you that you didn't go
Paying to go to Neyland and lose is enough to make me someone you don’t want to be around for a few days. Definitely not one of my finer traits. lol. I don’t mind a loss in a good hard fought game. But the spectacular losses or losses that I feel were escapable (when I put my head coach hat on) burn me up.

Yes. I was at that game. I think the final score was 17-10. It was a very typical Fulmer game against a team we should have been blowing out. He always had his slow tempo, trying to control the clock with very few snaps and possessions, really long drives, but sometimes just couldn’t punch it into the end zone. That era was so frustrating because we could never get our back-ups any experience. Teams that we should have been beating 59-10, we were beating 24-7.
I was a kid back then, but when I see folks here saying that “the game surpassed Fulmer” or whatever along those lines, I assume this is exactly what they meant. I didn’t get what that meant for a while. I just thought we weren’t as good as everyone thought we would be. Fulmer should have retired after losing the 2001 SEC Championship. I didn’t know it then as a little kid watching with my dad, but I think he had an inkling. He was disgusted.

And Majors should've retired (or been fired) after the 1988 debacle.

How about 2006 beating Air Force with a two point conversion. Even good Tennessee teams have a history of laying some stinkers.
I was at that game… I remember (I think it was Jackson) that got a concussion in OT and man was I nervous… because a little bit before is when Inky got hurt… obviously had no clue it was that bad but knew it wasn’t good. I was sitting right in the middle of the Air Force fans… fun times

I remember that game, but I wasn’t there. I sat in the dining room floor with the radio on. I believe our defense just couldn’t figure out the super old school offensive scheme they ran. I remember that game because of Inky’s injury that Bob initially thought was a stinger.

How Dooley got hired is still one of our country's greatest mysteries.
Because Mike Hamilton was a freaking idiot, that's why. After Kiffin bolted for USC and left us holding the bag, when it didn't look like that a big-name Coach wanted to come due to the circumstances, Hamilton should've made Kippy Brown the Interim Coach for the 2010 season and see how that went. If it wouldn't have gone well, as expected, then we would've had more time and a better plan in place in landing a proven HC. Instead, Hamilton panicked and hired Dooley so he could make a quick hire and tried to save face by saying that since Vince Dooley was his father, then Derek had the pedigree to succeed at UT. Which we know how that turned out.

I remember an announcement about an injury and didn’t think nothing of it… I think it was him.

It’s like Clemson with Dabo. For the Vols fans who were too young to remember Fulmer’s decline: It was a lot like what Clemson has been going through.

Cade Klubnic is their Eric Ainge. It’s almost over for Dabo, unless he can hire a great offensive coordinator before time runs out.

Perhaps the Richmond Spiders have his guy?

The offense wasn’t bad; the defense was (horrendous
The offense wasn’t bad, but Heupel would’ve had Bray and them WRs lighting it up regularly and consistently. Of course, Sunseri’s defense would just sit on the field sucking their thumbs, but we’d at least have a chance at the end of a 200 point shootout.

I don’t know if Dollar General carries one. The Raiders have him in stock, however. As do the Seminoles and the USF Bulls.

In the long run, it can save you on a $60 million buyout.

We shared the SEC title in 1989 and won it in 1990. The 1990 team also gave Spurrier his worst beat down ever in the SEC
I'm aware. Only won the SEC in 1990 (and 1985) because Florida was on probation. I'm just using the argument that Fulmer should've retired (or been fired) after 2001 or even 2005 with Majors.

But speaking of those titles, people constantly talk about how Fulmer "backed into Atlanta" but fail to acknowledge that Majors backed into 2 of his titles and only shared the one in his best season.

I’ll go to my grave believing we were the best team in the country in 1990, but a few key mistakes during crunch time (Greg Burke missed FGs vs Colorado, Auburn, & Bama and an Andy Kelly interception in the end zone against #1 Notre Dame) cost us dearly. Even with the season ending injury to Chick Webb in game #2, we were right there.
