How must win is the fl game for jones

For me.... it won't. I've had concerns since the start. He answered the recruiting concern almost right away. I personally thought his career strength was player development. The last piece was game day coaching. In year one, he lost to Vandy and shouldn't have. He was outcoached by Franklin. In year two, a winnable UF game slipped through his fingers as he and Muschamp worked hard to prove who could be the most conservative. Last year's foibles are well known and discussed.

His career win % against teams with a winning record is 37%. He's 36% to date at UT. He's 3-18 vs ranked teams when he could easily be 6-12.

Continued failure to beat UF and Bama won't change anything... just affirm that he's not a coach who can compete at the top tier of the SEC.

He's done a great job building and improving the program Sunday through Friday. But he needs to start evening things up with some significant W's.... and more of them than L's.

 here here!

I guess one wildcard is that the new AD won't have any inherent loyalties to Jones. He might be quicker to move on him if he/she doesn't see the right progress.

That being said, I don't think a tipped ball in this game one way or the other is going to change a lot in the larger scheme of things.

A tipped ball shouldn't be the deciding factor of this game. If it is... Jones has failed to utilize his advantages.

Coach Jones is the safest coach in the SEC east until at least 2020. I would trade an App State loss for an 11-1 season.

It's amazing that people (seemingly educated sports fan) that actually think UT would fire CBJ this year or even next year if he doesn't beat Florida etc. and win the East. I agree. It'll take a few years of "losing" before that discussion ever begins. Most that believe that foolishness don't understand the BIG PICTURE at all. Kinda silly really and feeds their emotional side...I guess....

siap:
it will be interesting what they do with a new ad, should we prove to flounder around that 7, 8, 9 win type program, and continue to lose to the rivals we have. It will really be the first time they'd be faced with making a "program direction" decision, that's not just as obvious as dooley made it, or fulmer made it there at the end.

It's year 4 so he's at the point where he does need to beat our rivals...not every game - that would be unrealistic - but he can't continue long being 0-whatever against Florida and Bama...got the Georgia Dawg off his back last year...
I would expect that he be at least .500 against Bama, Florida and Georgia over his career...you might not count his first couple of years but we're counting now...

Phil was 54% against those guys and Johnny was 36%...

If you include Auburn - and they were a bigger rival before divisional play - Phil is 53% and Johnny is 39%...

8/10 importance, lose and he's unofficially on the hot seat. Not warm enough to cook him, but getting toasty, especially if he loses to UGA and Bama. Still don't expect him to get canned for another year or so, even if loses to UF and Bama next year. But by then if hasn't won a BIG Game, he's roasting hot.

It's going to be a fight Saturday. But with the talent on this team. I expect to win a close hard fought defensive game. Like 3-7 point's.
That being said yes this game should be looked at as a make or brake game. It's time to start winning games like this.

For good luck, to change things up, I'm switching from Jack to Makers for pregame cocktails at the tailgate party and drinking Sam Adams instead of Bud Lite! That should do the trick.

With a lame duck AD Jones is set no matter what happens this year

and through 2017 as well, but a new AD sweeps clean if there are not iconic wins on the resume on The Hill. I'm pulling for Butch and staff to get 'er done!

As long as CBJ can recruit he will be here. I believe he will upgrade coaches over time. He just needs more money for salaries.

VFL34... disagrees with your sentiment. He thinks the boosters and donors will be hacked off if Jones loses to UF again (I imagine in part due to choking the previous two years). He said they'd likely give CBJ next year to turn it around and start winning against the big rivals.

if UT loses somehow, will the big money boosters start putting out feelers for petrino or herman at houston??

UT was 18th in the country before paying Shoop well over a million to join the staff.

I'd be fine with either one, but i hope it doesn't come to that. I started a thread after the game last week that called for an overhaul of the coaching staff because I've been so miserable over how our Vols have been playing. I've never been so pissed after being 3-0, but I've calmed down since then and I'm hoping CBJ has his HC career turnaround with this game. Please Butch, this is the most important game of your HC career. Let's get this win and get the program headed toward championship caliber status once again. Beat the brakes off the Gators.

I want a coach and staff that will dominate the majority to all thee time in the East first. If butchie can't beat FL this yr then I forsee him being a constant loser to the gatas. To me personally..that's unacceptable. FL will more and likely get better. A few on the staff was responsible for the last 2 loses imo.

You are wanting him to do something that no coach has ever done at Tennessee.
