How many years will it take

If this is true why were the talking heads saying the only reason Bama looked so ordinary when they played Auburn & Miss State was their hurt LB's and backups were not getting it done.
I thought it was next man up.

That's not why they lost to Auburn. Alabama is Auburns greatest rival. If they lose every other game, they want to beat Bama. They "get up" for that game.

Also, Auburn has had Sabans number recently. Not to mention, Auburn is a good team that beat both Bama and Georgia this year. I think they got in the Bama staff's head with the Kick Six play from a few years ago.

Anyway, the talking heads are just that, talking heads. If you watch their past 5 seasons, Bama is that deep. Their 3rd string is some of the best players in the country.

If you need any proof, just look at Alvin Kamara. Guy wasn't even 3rd string there.

Next year will tell us about his pure coaching talent. He's going to have a bad product on the field as far as talent, skill, and development goes. He's going to have to coach around that. James Franklin came to Candy and Penn State with the same problem. He got by on pure coaching and scheme. Now he's getting talent and has had time for development.

7? Do what? How does that help depth when 3 of the classes you brought will already be gone and nowhere to be found on a depth chart.

In 3-4 years he better have all the talent and all the depth he needs to compete for championships. That 7 year crap is crap.

I never said he needed 7 years to compete for championships. Show me where I said that.

I said he needed 7 years to build the quality and talented depth that Alabama currently has. Even Saban didn't have the depth and talent he has now in his 3rd or even 5th year.

Alabama is deeper than they need to be to compete for championships. That's what you get from winning multiple championships close together. Like it or not, Bama is not at the level of competing for championships. They are at a level never experienced before. The title is theirs to lose every year. Their 3rd string is better than most people's starters.

Like I said elsewhere, look at Kamara. He wasn't even 3rd string when he was at Bama. Think about that.

No matter what happens this year in the title game, Bama will be the odds on favorite to win it next year. And the year after that. And the next year too.

How many years will it take before CJP has the type players and depth that it will take to have a defense capable of what Alabamas defense did last night? It isn't just the starting 11, I believe you almost have to be 3 deep in places and certainly 2 deep with players whose skill set matches that defense.. I say 2020 season before it becomes somewhat noticeable and 2021 to really see it.. Personally I just don't think its about teaching and learning a new defensive scheme. Its about proper body types and skill sets and then having 4 and 5 star talent with said bodies and skill sets. Not many 3-4 players on this roster, they were recruited for a 4 man base front. The other is having long 5 star type CBs that can play alone and allow LBs to go hunt..

The better question is! Will the fans be patient or will they demand a National Championship in 2018?
Be patient and allow Pruitt to implement his plan. HIS plan not YOUR plan. You may have a two year plan and he may have a five year plan

Agree , however, There is A LOT MORE TO IT than just learning a new system.. 4-3 LBs typically are built much differently than 3- 4 LBs, not even close. And the DT is a completely different type body type than a DT in a 4-3 type.. Its not about learning the system or effort.. Kongbo could possibly be built for a DE in the 3-4 but Taylor would probably have to go to LB school and move back to outside LB. Those kinds of things make me think this is a 4 year project, and I wonder if fans will be patient?

I agree with you as well. Only difference I have is I think it should not take four years. See a huge improvement in year 2 and by year 3 we should be in the SEC Championship/NC consideration.

Most fans, I think, will be patient. However, the negavols, who are the most vocal, will start coming out about mid-season next year. Good news is Fulmer will be patient and that is what counts!

GO VOLS!

5 year plan for what? If it's to be 9-3, nope all my patience has run out. Hell, if he loses to Vandy and/or fails to make it to a bowl game in year 1 he has failed.

The Question was HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE.....

The answer is to do WHAT???

Championships? Beat Florida? Beat Bammer?
Do What? All of the above??

Since the question didn't define It?
I expect "it" to happen immediately. Because here is what I want. I want the players and Coaches to go to WORK. I want them be competitive. I want them to show improvement.
I want players who don't want to be coachable, work and get better to be benched and sent home.
At this point I don't care bout "stars" attached to a players name. I care bout how many hours he spends in weight room and film room.

I may be wrong, butt I think my "it" may show up quickly?? :rock2:

actually, good point, and good question.

you look at a 4-8/0-8 team this season and you think it has to be relative, right?

no one believes this team was that bad.

i still think there's a baby step approach to the first year. there's 4-5 opportunities on the 2018 schedule to kind of make a statement....see if they can? can you beat an Auburn, GA, FL, Bama, WVU in year 1? can you win 2 of those? and then...can you not lose to KY, Vandy?

for me, "it" really means playing for a conf title. and i think it's probably 3 years.

next year....go to a bowl, and win as many as you can. we'll find ourselves in a game or two next year that we'll have a chance to win, that we maybe think right now we can't.

Uhhmm, actually I did. Read the OP again,

"How many years will it take before CJP has the type players and depth that it will take to have a defense capable of what Alabamas defense did last night?"

That was the question, as usual posts take on a life of their own and it turned into a wins and losses and winning the east thing, which was not the topic of the OP

Why is everybody so envious of Alabama? I have no desire to be the University of Alabama at Knoxville. Let's do our own thing. Screw them and Georgia too. We should have thrown the house at Chip Kelly and Scott Frost.

pffft, I would be the University of Alabama in Knoxville in a f'ing heartbeat. Bring the talent, the attitude, the swagger, and the freaking championships on! When your way isn't getting it done and the other guys is, do what the other guy is doing.

You don't fish much do you?

It's just about paying a big time coach. We want to pay around 4 million a year. It's going to take double that much to compete for championships. Our fans are perfectly happy with 6 and 6. They will still pack the stadium. There is no incentive for Heavy D (Davenport) to demand more. Look at how Pearl resurrected hoops here. Just bring in a helicopter dick (Clay Travis) like Franklin or Petersen and hide and watch. We have an AD who has never been an AD, a head coach who has never been a head coach, a defensive coordinator who has never been a coordinator, and an offensive coordinator who has never called plays. Blackburn would've fixed it, but hey we're the laughing stock of the SEC for a reason.

What big time proven SEC caliber coach did you have in mind?......for the four hundredth time.

I was thinking look at Penn St in 2012. They were in far worse condition post Sandusky than Vols are now. O'Brien's resume, at the time, was comparable to CJP. PSU still managed to go 8-4 and 7-5. Some hopefully this yr we will be no worse than 7-5. 9 wins in 2019. SEC East title in 2020.

Penn State also played a watered down non-conference schedule and the Big Ten was very weak during that time. Tennessee and Pruitt doesn't have that luxury.

the quickest way for improvement is for Pruitt to find players who will play with the effort bama's guys do. We talk about their talent and physical ability, and it is impressive, but they play with an attitude, effort and confidence which Tennessee under stoops never did.

Why is it then that when some people wanted Pruitt to leave Gumpton and come to Knoxville immediately the response has been "Well, Kirby Smart stayed for Bama's NC and look how well it worked out for Georgia"?

Either/or my friend.

apples and oranges my friend. stop grasping for reasons to hate Pruitt.

You mean Fulmer. Pruitt is a figure head.

Wish that was true. Would love to have a National Champion Hall of Fame coach running the show. But some decided that is not good enough at a program that had never had that level of success so they moved on. This past 10 years is the real UT. What Phil did was an anomaly and will not happen around here again. Git in where you fit in!!

Gruden. It was always Gruden or bust. We busted. Pruitt was on no one's radar. Maybe it will work out. (Fourth time's the charm?) Kiffin, Dooley, Jones, Pruitt.
