How many years will it take

Maybe, but the talent we have on the DLine is not young, and will graduate soon. We will need a good 3 years to shore that up and then another 2 to get stable across the defense with depth.

To get the type of talented depth that Bama has now (3rd string as good as any starters in the nation), it will most likely take a solid 7 years.

If this is true why were the talking heads saying the only reason Bama looked so ordinary when they played Auburn & Miss State was their hurt LB's and backups were not getting it done.
I thought it was next man up.

I personally feel we have the talent now to compete. We simply had a garbage coach. Too many talented players being misused or not used at all. Pruitt won't let that happen.

What is your definition of compete? Who on our team could be in the 2 deep at Bama or Georgia? T. Smith and possibly Chandler on offense. On defense, possibly Bitulli, Kirkland, Tuttle, Phillips and Gaulden.

How many years will it take before CJP has the type players and depth that it will take to have a defense capable of what Alabamas defense did last night? It isn't just the starting 11, I believe you almost have to be 3 deep in places and certainly 2 deep with players whose skill set matches that defense.. I say 2020 season before it becomes somewhat noticeable and 2021 to really see it.. Personally I just don't think its about teaching and learning a new defensive scheme. Its about proper body types and skill sets and then having 4 and 5 star talent with said bodies and skill sets. Not many 3-4 players on this roster, they were recruited for a 4 man base front. The other is having long 5 star type CBs that can play alone and allow LBs to go hunt..

I made a lengthy post a while back showing that in the .majority of coach we consider good, you can see a major turn around in year two. If it takes 4 years, that should be a red flag.

Depth will take time 3-4yrs maybe. CJP defense against Clemson was very aggressive and mostly a 4-2-5 during first half. Bama and UGA D are very aggressive and hit you in the mouth every chance they get, for some reason our D under CBJ wasn’t aggressive and set back waiting on play to develop instead of being disruptive. We have the talent just hasn’t been coached properly. CJP will recruit kids that are currently playing a 3-4 in high school which will help transition! If this dude can coach up players we will be competing for east in yr2

If he's a great coach... It won't take him more than 2 or 3.

Any coach that is in the upper tier of P5 coaches have ALL made HUGE impacts by year 3. Most by year 2. See Saban, Meyer, Smart, Peterson, Stoops, etc.

If he's average... it'll take 4-5. Those are the facts. We'd better hope to see BIG improvement by 2019 or we are looking at Dooley, Butch 2.0.

Bama was in the SAME position we are right now when Saban took over. Year one, he lost to LA Monroe. Year TWO... he's winning big.

Bama had decent talent on that first team, much like we do on ours now. Not great, but good.

You mean Fulmer. Pruitt is a figure head.
you've obviously not read anything about Jeremy Pruitt.
It's just about paying a big time coach. We want to pay around 4 million a year. It's going to take double that much to compete for championships.
wrong.

Our fans are perfectly happy with 6 and 6.
Wrong
They will still pack the stadium
Good.
There is no incentive for Heavy D (Davenport) to demand more. Look at how Pearl resurrected hoops here. Just bring in a helicopter dick (Clay Travis) like Franklin or Petersen and hide and watch.
i'm not sure what the hell you're saying here. but i think helicopter dick is funny.
We have an AD who has never been an AD, a head coach who has never been a head coach, a defensive coordinator who has never been a coordinator, and an offensive coordinator who has never called plays.
and all of them are better suited, and better equipped to lead this program than anything this program has put out there in the last 10 years.
Blackburn would've fixed it, but hey we're the laughing stock of the SEC for a reason.
and it has nothing to do with anything you've posted here. that damage was already done.

Its really not even logical or fair to use Alabama in this context. What Saban has managed to do is absolutely unprecedented. Its just something that has never happened before and may never happen again.
agreed. they shouldn't even be able to do what they're doing in today's college football landscape. if a program can get 60-70% of what Bama has done the last 10 years, that would still be exceptional.

If we aren't there by year three probably not going to happen.

i tend to agree. i think this staff will recruit very well. and i'm hoping to see something in year two. not necessarily what Kirby has done in year 2, he was left a pretty sweet deal. i don't think the situation is the same. but could they win 9, maybe 10 with a bowl in year 2? top 10-15 finish? i think that's doable.

Took Kirby Smart 2 to get to the NC.

Well, to be fair, Smart walked into a much better situation than Pruitt will be getting here.
To answer the original question, I believe it will take 3-4 years for Tennessee to compete for the east if Pruitt is the real deal.

Year 1 a bowl game, year 2 he better be in competition for the east. Within first 5 years he better have won the east. AND NEVER A LOSS TO VANDY!

but it will probably take 3 years to have a top notch defense to match Ga or Bama. Even if you get 4-5 star guys for the line and LBs they are not physically ready to play SEC teams for the most part. They need work in the weight room and film study to be fully ready to dominate.

I just hope Pruitt doesn't come out talking about "year zero". I knew that Butch was in over his head when he started making excuses before he coached his first game.

5 to get to Alabama talent level, 7 to get their depth.

7? Do what? How does that help depth when 3 of the classes you brought will already be gone and nowhere to be found on a depth chart.

In 3-4 years he better have all the talent and all the depth he needs to compete for championships. That 7 year crap is crap.

People need to stop using this as evidence for an argument.
Why is it then that when some people wanted Pruitt to leave Gumpton and come to Knoxville immediately the response has been "Well, Kirby Smart stayed for Bama's NC and look how well it worked out for Georgia"?

Either/or my friend.

I think the feeling is that the new coach has to build a reputation. Of course neither Saban nor Smart had to really do that, and we have picked fruit directly from the Saban tree. Long wait is unacceptable.

'roughly' yes agree...that's what's hurt us is depth in skill-set...being able to rotate fresh bodies and not skip a beat takes some time to get to that elite level...5-7 years best guesstimate...honestly, cutting that time in half is possible to win...but Championship powerhouse level? Ehhh... I dunno if you can build it that fast.

By year three, the vast majority of the roster will have "grown up" under CJP. His S&C, his development, etc. I'm not saying he'll be as good as he'll get by then, but you ought to have a pretty good sense of what his program looks like.

As for the existing talent, yes there is some there, but they will essentially be early-enrolled freshmen next year. They'll have one spring and fall camp to understand what this staff is trying to do. Many will contribute. Others will not.

Agree , however, There is A LOT MORE TO IT than just learning a new system.. 4-3 LBs typically are built much differently than 3- 4 LBs, not even close. And the DT is a completely different type body type than a DT in a 4-3 type.. Its not about learning the system or effort.. Kongbo could possibly be built for a DE in the 3-4 but Taylor would probably have to go to LB school and move back to outside LB. Those kinds of things make me think this is a 4 year project, and I wonder if fans will be patient?
Did you pay attention to CJP when he said he isnt making an immediate switch to 3-4? He said it will match what the personnel can do.

That's fair

I think so. I'm not putting up with anymore rebuilding or excuses. Other coaches have done it in 2-3 years so by the end of year five if he hasn't won the east him and Fulmer need to be run out of town.

No offense but to say it will take 7 years to get depth makes no sense. Players for the most part are on a team for 4 years. You don't retain depth for 7 years. You bring in new players every year but the players you bring in this year or next year are not going to help your depth 7 years from now.4 years down the road yes because they will still be on the team but not 7.
