Chip Kelly is standing in the wings right behind Gruden. Lol

And behind Peyton .. and .. "insert current flavor of the day coach name" ...

You could put 12 wins, win the SEC and lose the first playoff game as not good enough and some would still pick it.

Just curious if you have an estimate of how many "some" are, and if you could name them. (Not asking you to name them, just could you)?

I ask because, just like sjt using "some" and "majority", I don't think there are as many as you guys think there are.

I'm not who you asked. But I think I may be able to help answer the question.

First, you have to separate out the openly admitted fans of other teams. We have a handful of regulars here who are Gator fans ... a few Bama fans ... at least two Ky Wildcats ... and we used to have three or four Dawg fans before we whupped them two years running (they don't seem to show up any more). Oh, and for a little while, we had one Ohio State fan hanging around. So probably 10-20 total of these.

I'm sure every one of those would LOVE to see UT fahr Butch if he led us to a 12-win regular season and SEC championship. Because he would at that point be a confirmed threat to their own team's success.

But that's not really who you're asking about. You're asking about supposed Volunteer fans here who would like to see our program start its coaching carousel all over again, even if we do well this season.

I believe there are anywhere from five to twenty-five troll accounts among us. Folks who picked screen names and set account variables so that they could be confused as Vols fans, but who really aren't. This subset of the crowd are likely fans of other SEC programs, just here to troll the VolNation community. At times, one or another of them will come really close to revealing himself, then go quiet for several days before inching back into the fray. If you watch for them, you can find these.

Finally, there are true Vols fans who for one reason or another have concluded that they just do not like Butch. Hate him, even, in some cases. And even if it costs us some games in the short term, they are willing to suffer through that if it means it could get Jones canned. I've called a couple of those out in the past few months, when they said something along these lines. One just in the past week.

So how many total of these are there? Hard to tell. Since they are true Volunteer fans, their hatred of Butch and love of the Vols are in conflict, and that causes their mood to wax and wane over time. In other words, sometimes they're more reasonable, sometimes less. So it's not a fixed number.

All taken together, the fans of other schools, the trolls, and the true Vols who hate Butch still don't add up to even 5% of VolNation. Maybe not even 2%. But when you have 2,000 people logged on during a typical off-season afternoon, 2%-5% still comes up to a pretty annoying number of active posters who spew nothing but smartassery or vitriol at our program and/or our coach (2% of 2,000 = 40 ... 5% = 100).

Screw em all, Go Vols!

I actually gave vfb a like lol.
Take this as my response also sjt.
I've told you before, I enjoy college football. It's a game, not life or death. It's one of the few things, outside family that I truly enjoy. I will never waste a moment boycotting games or starting petitions. Seriously, lighten up, it's college sports.

So.. you argue with me for saying that too many fans are OK with mediocrity... even taking a few personal shots... then tell me to "lighten up" because it isn't important if UT is mediocre or not?

Can you "enjoy" the Vols losing or being 2nd tier?

The end of Dooley proved that if the product is bad many people... maybe not you... will find something else to do with their time and money.

There is no mass amount of fans that will stop going to games because of who the coach is. I attend one game each year and will skip this year, because i recieved Navy/Army tickets. Im not a CBj fan but it has nothing to do with deciding to spend 1500 to attend a game.

If I recall correctly, attendance fell off by about 10-20K in Dooley's last year. Some was protest. Some was people just decided not to pay that kind of money or waste their time to watch a bad team. TV likely paralleled that trend.

And... you have some who are genuine, longsuffering, diehard Vol fans who have nothing at all against Jones. They simply compare him to what should be "reasonable" expectations for a championship caliber coach and find him wanting.

MOST of Jones' critics here fall in that category. The VAST majority of us want to see him be a championship caliber coach so that no change is required. However, we aren't blind to the patterns within his coaching... or how they extrapolate if he can't or won't change.

You are correct. I'm not interested in your opinion on this. Even before your tl;dr :) I pretty much know what you think. :good!:

So you don't really care to know the truth, you just want to know that person's opinion about what the truth might be. Interesting.

There is a true and "correct" answer to the question. None of us know with precision what it is. So we all have our own estimates, or guesses.

Why you're only interested in one guy's guess, and not the underlying reality, I find that interesting. Are you stalking him?

You missed the question, SJT.

The question is, how many here would want Butch to be canned even if he led us to a 12-0 regular season and an SEC championship?

By your description, you do not include yourself or any of those "VAST majority of us" in that group.

So this really isn't about you and those who share your view. You're more than welcome to join in the conversation, but you're not part of the group being discussed.

Maybe because he quoted his posted with the question?

This whole joint is full of stalkers if so.

Among fans? Close to zero. Those who are fans and are arguing like that now... would more than likely change screen names like so many have before.

Right or wrong... and I've been wrong quite a few times... I've used the same screen name since 2005.

So that wasn't really about you and those who share your view.
You didn't. I think you just unfairly left out the group that folks like KBVol and I belong to. It isn't that we "hate" Jones. I certainly have nothing but respect for his effort and the things he's been able to get done.

My criticisms of Jones begin and end with themes that run through his tenure from the start until now and what they portend for his prospects going forward.

Frankly, I think the statements he gets beat up over are played too far. It concerns me that he may not have a realistic picture of himself and the program and "expectations"... but the stuff he's been mocked over is to some small or large degree stripped of context.

The "champions of life" thing will haunt him until he wins a football championship or moves on. But I don't think he ever dreamed it would be taken the way it was. I don't think Jones believes that kind of thing excuses failure on the field... at least I hope not.

There it is! That is my whole disagreement, for lack of a better word, with you. There are so many more in your little group than you think there are. Your arrogance in thinking its exclusive to just a few holier than thou members is comical.

There are also a couple on the other side of that too.

Edit: Fwiw, I personally don't put KB in the "group" you're in.

I didn't "unfairly" leave you out of anything, SJT. You simply aren't part of the group of people on VolNation who would like to see Butch fired even after taking us to a 12-0 season and an SEC championship. You said so yourself.

And that's precisely what the question was, who would do that?

Get real. There's no "holier than though" expressed in that... and I don't see all that many in that "group".... but whatever you say.

Was your response "arrogant"? You assumed to know what someone else's attitude was and used condescending language like "your little group" and "holier than thou".

I imagine there might be people who have made it personal on the negative side. There are a couple who seem to have made it pretty personal on the positive side (if they aren't trolls). Why exactly someone would "hate" a football coach that they do not know personally... is beyond me.

I'd be tickled pink if it all came together for Jones. He's worked hard enough to deserve it. He seems to be a morally good person who loves UT and the players.

I try to be careful not to express disrespect when I criticize him. I probably fail at times but that's my intent. He deserves respect.

Exactly. Which is why I didn't include you in my tally, above. And it's also why I don't think of you or KB as NegaVols. You're actually quite positive about the program and what you want for it, while being critical when you think things aren't going well.

No, I was only counting up the folks within these forums who would wish ill on Butch even if he does take us to championships. And I'm pretty confident in my estimated range of 40-100 total, including (1) open fans of other colleges, (2) trolls, and (3) folks whose dislike of Butch has overridden their wish for the success of our lads in orange.

I think with 7, maybe 8 wins, depending on who the losses are against and you give a new AD reason to believe a move may be needed. 9 or more and he is on solid ground. Anything less than 7 I believe the hand is forced.

I see it that way, but I could be wrong. Hmm. I see a lot in that group that have different ways of expressing it.

Great question, I appreciate you asking me so you and I could come to an understanding. Yes, it was arrogant. Sorry I assumed to know what your attitude was. Hmmm.

This is the last post on the previous page, I'm on 30 ppp. Just noticed it.

Funny it's in response to my comment that I pretty much know what you think.

I concur. I just don't think he has it in him, he's not an SEC-caliber coach, and it's nothing to be ashamed of as there are a lot of coaches at P5 schools that aren't either.

At this point, 5 seasons in, I just don't feel that it's in the best interest of the UT football program to retain a coach who consistently struggles to reach .500 in conference play.
