Home Brewers

I don't decant mine before pitching. Do you? Have not noticed any taste.

I don't airlock mine though. I use a foam stopper. I can see it fermenting and it helps with oxygen.

I want a stir plate next. Thinking about the one from stir starter.com.

I decanted today for the first time. Ive been reading about it, some do some don't. I read where one guy said if you ever taste the starter water you'll never pour it in your wort again.

I started them on Thurs and put them in the fridge last night to settle out. Took them out this morning and decanted the water. I did taste it, it was a little nasty but not as bad as I expected. Left just a little water on top of the yeast cake, swirled it up and pitched.

Im thinking about making a stir plate once I my keg brew pot, hot liquor tank, and mash tun built.

Decanting worked fine. I was concerned about putting the starter in the fridge over night, warming it back up and pitching but it worked fine. The next morning the airlock was bubbling away.

Like I said before I am going to try lagering for the first time. Ill be starting two more yeast starters tonight and lagering in my keezer. Anyone had any experience good or bad with lagering?

I don't have a fermentation chamber to do any lagering.

Always have my eye open for a cheap mini fridge that I can convert but no luck. I almost had one at lowes. One was scratched and marked down to 100 from 189. Went home and thought about it, came back and was gone.

I realized last night my fermenters were too big to fit on the ledge in my keezer so I went and picked up two bucket fermenters today.

You could probably get a used refrigerator or freezer off craigslist and a Johnson temp controller for about the same price and you would have alot more room in it. If you have the room for an extra fridge or freezer.

Actually even if you buy the mini fridge you would still need a temp controller. A fridge wont get warm enough for the primary fermentation. Needs to be about 50 degrees.

My brother in law can make the temp regulator. He's an electrician.

I already have a spare full size fridge. No room for another. That's why I wanted a mini.

Nice, your brother in law should be able to help out with that stir plate too. There are some pretty good plans on line for DIY stirplates.

Toasted oat porter in the works this weekend. Imperial IPA (11%) in the secondary. Only 1/2 gallon sparge on that one. 22 lb grain bill and 8 oz of hops.

Easily spent 100 bucks at northern brewer. Had to get another porter kit. Was so good. Also grabbed misc supplies. Any homebrew Christmas gifts this year?

Sorry. No wine here. I see you're in Atlanta. Checkout hop city. They have a homebrew section and have books of recipes. I'm not sure on wine specifically but the staff there is great and knowledgable.
