Home Brewers

What is the initial start up cost to begin home brewing and where is the best place to obtain supplies?

You can get kits cheaper than 200. Think I've seen Midwest supplies groupons that are really cheap.

Of course equipment matters so pay for good stuff if you're serious.

Northern brewer is another good website.

I am a fan of the true German beers with the higher alcohol content, is it possible to craft such a beer?

Nice reviews Steve, I wish I had taken pics.

Really enjoyed your Altbier. Nice copper color, clean malty flavor. Great job!

You can, but I'm on about the kits around $150 with about $50 for extra malt extracts and a few other odds and ends.

Update on my Kolsch and Blueberry Wheat:

After three weeks in the keg the off taste in the Kolsch has mellowed quite a bit. After about 3 I hardly notice it. :) Its certainly not one to brag about but at least I wont have to dump it.

The tart taste in the blueberry has also mellowed. Its still a little tart but it actually tastes pretty good. It has a dark blue or purple color. The little bits of blueberry were still clogging up the out on my keg so I got a funnel with a filter and poured it through that into me old priming bucket. Then I cleaned the keg and filtered again going back in. My biggest concern in doing this was aerating the beer but so far so good. I am getting a good pour out of the faucet now. I would still suggest using blueberry extract for blueberry wheat.

My Pumpkin Ale and Nut Brown are fermenting now and will go in the carboy this weekend. :beerf:

Bock beer is the highest alcohol content German beer and yes you can brew those. But if alcohol content is important to you, recommend Belgian style or IPA.

Biggest problem with traditional German Lagers & Pils is refrigeration. Most kits use Ale yeast that doesn't require expensive refrigeration but the taste is a little bit off.

Thanks guys for all your imput on this, I have a fridge that I have converted into a kegerator, thinking this would be a good way to keep it stocked and have fun creating and enjoying it.

Darth. Loving that Irish red. Very tasty. Was this grain or extract?

Thanks USAF, glad you liked it. It was extract. I'm looking at making the switch to all grain soon.

I got yours yesterday. Ill try them this weekend. I think you said one is a porter. What is the other one?

Hey Steve, I thought Id post this here so it doesn't get buried so quick. I saw in the beer thread you like Sweetwater 420. Have you made Northern Brewers Extra Pale Ale? Tastes very similar. I try to keep some on tap.

Thanks for the heads up. Yeah I do like 420, just got a growler filled with it today. When we get our next brew batch I'll have to check out NBEPA.

Got 5 gallons of apple cider with an English Cider Yeast, 5 cups of sugar, a bunch of honey and a splash of vanilla fermenting in my 6.5 gallon plastic bucket. The air seal is bubbling like crazy. Should be ready by thanksgiving

The cider was expensive this year at $40+

Brewed a pumpkin ale this afternoon. Made my yeast starter yesterday afternoon. First time doing a starter. Very easy. Wonder how quick I'll get fermentation.

I got a new home brew project too. My wife is thrilled, lol. I'm going to turn this keg into a brew kettle. Then I'm gonna get two more and turn one into a hot liquor tank and one mash tun.

My next step is going to be all grain.

And if you guys are using liquid yeast and not making a starter you are missing out. It makes fermentation quicker and better. You also have the peace if mind knowing your yeast is alive before pitching.
