Home Brewers

Can't remember if it had a label or not. Our sophisticated system is a letter in the lid, should be an A. If there is a label, ignore it. Everyone in the neighborhood drops off empty bottles to us. Haven't bought bottles since we started over a year ago.

Haha ok, it has a Buckshot Amber Ale label on it from Natty Greene's that looks new. I didnt know if maybe you were the NG brew master.

Blue turned out like a lambic... pretty tart, with a wild kinda twinge to it. Very slight blueberry backnote.

Darth, sounds like we're 0 for 2.

Maybe it'll perk up after bottle carb, but I'm a little disappointed.

Ha, that bottle was probably mine, one of my good buddies lives in Raleigh and we hit downtown Raleigh a few times. Natty Greens is a cool hang out, beer is average but I grabbed a six on the way out of town.

My dream job is being a brewer, kinda like the Coast guy in Charleston. Don't care about running a business just make really good beer and just enough capacity to make a living.

Should get better with a bit more age. Sometimes the anticipation and excitement is a bit too much so the taste is a let down, then the next time it's much better. Kinda like the Seinfeld episode where the chick looked either really hot or really not depending on the lighting. :)

I bled the c02 off my keg of blueberry took the lid off and tried to find blueberry sludge on the bottom with a sanitized spoon. I couldn't find any so I took the out post off to check the dip tube. The tube was clear but there's little bits of blueberry clogging up the poppet valve. I can clean it and get about a glass before it clogs up again. I think pureeing the blueberries was a bad idea. I guess Ill go ahead and siphon it into jugs this weekend. The taste is tart but its not too bad. Like I said before if I ever do this one again it will be with extract not real blueberries.

Enjoyed the Porter on my patio today. Broke out my best beer glass - Budweiser or Budvar, the real one from Czech.

Great color, did not have much of a head which worried me until I tasted it. AWESOME! I'm not a big Porter guy and when I do have them I usually do the Smoked Porters. This one was great without any smoke taste to it. Thx!

Well Done!! :good!:

Course once I broke open one, the second snuck right in there. :)

Very interesting taste on this one. Color was dark for a wheat and besides the mild wheat taste it also had a hint of an Octoberfest style.

Nicely done! :eek:k:

Awesome. Glad you liked them. Ive always been worrisome over priming sugar and head. I used a lot I the wheat.

Steve, Im going to have your Alt this Saturday before the game.

Darth - same with yours, will pop them next weekend. I thought I'd get to them this weekend but time got away from me and I forgot to get them cold. They are up next in the que.

Glad you liked it. It is a moderate beer, nothing crazy just simple and easy drinking. It was all grain as I recall, from a kit. No special treatment. We were lazy on this one and let it ferment over 2 weeks so was a bit worried. With all our kids activities, really hard to stay on top of the brewing. But it turned out good.

Here is the link of what we bought, store in Charlotte called Alternative Beverage:

German Altbier

They classify it as an Amber Ale.
Came to post the same as USAF. Taste came out clean, can tell you have your process down.

Can also tell it was a kit brew (no offense!)

You should consider boil hopping the next batch. It's a big next step and can really add a lot.

Glad you liked it. Agree we need to expand our process. Not quite as serious as Darth and USAF. Thought you might enjoy an off the wall German Ale as a change of the normal "German" style beers.

Color was nice and dark, really robust and full flavor even for an Oktoberfest. Similar to a lager my dad did where he added 25% darker grains to give an Oktoberfest feel.

Broke out my other favorite glass - original Pilsner Urquell also from Czech (my wife says I'm a certified dork with the glasses). Was surprised that the head was not as strong as expected. The taste was great, strong malty finish. Well done! :lolabove:

Again really nice rich color. This one had good head. Flavor was rich and strong red malt taste, I love red malt! Outstanding beer, left me longing for more. :clapping:

Hey darth! I am terrible. I will get mine out to you soon. Bad week at work and no end.

I'll get it out. Have not forgotten.

Any favorite recipes you'd like to share? I just finished a dunkelweizen. Looking for suggestions for my next batch.

After the boil is complete it is poured into the ferment tank and brought to 5 gallons with fresh water. You want to cool it as quick as possible, you can use a wort cooler or clean ice. Once this is done you add the yeast, stir and close it up. It will begin to ferment within a couple hours to 24 hours. You will know when it starts. The air lock on the top will perk like crazy from the yeast consuming the fermentable sugars. The bye product of this is alcohol and Co2. The Co2 is what is coming out of the air lock. I usually leave the beer in the ferment tank for one week.

Not sure if it's mentioned, but definitely use a hydrometer to measure the gravity before closing it up. You could end up with a carbonated desert wine instead of a nice cold beer if you're not careful.

What is the initial start up cost to begin home brewing and where is the best place to obtain supplies?
