Home Brewers

Have you guys ever harvested yeast from the fermenter? I was looking at some videos on how to do it last night. I think Im going to try it on my next batch.

Have not done it but it appears simple. Just sifting off the trub should be the biggest chore.

Wonder how you can measure the yeast population? Creating a starter will increase it but I wonder how much you'll start with.

I dont know how much it will start with but I will make a starter with it. Im gonna give it a shot. Looks pretty easy. Since my yeast arrived dead from heat a few weeks ago Ive been driving about 30 miles to buy yeast. If I could grow my own that would be great.

Never tried harvesting, don't know anything about it except the Dog Fish Head show where they harvested wild yeast by the pyramids.

Racked our blue last night over 5 lbs of blueberries. Very nice blueberry aroma coming out of the blowoff.

Just tried the porter I bottled on the 12th. Holy smokes is it good.

Carbonation is a little low but good for this style.

Darth and Steve are in for a treat.

I bottled two magnum bottles as Christmas presents for my brother in laws. Going to suggest the open them when I'm around.

Looking forward to trying that USAF. I got my Blueberry Ale and Kolsch bottled\kegged on Sat. I really hope the blueberry gets better. It has a tart or sour taste to it. Not really like blueberries. Unless it gets a whole lot better I wont be making it again. All those blueberries made a real mess in my carboy too. If I do it again I would probably use blueberry extract right before I keg it instead of real blueberries.

Don't like the sound of this...

We'll see, its in the keg under pressure right now. I tasted it uncarbonated right out of the carboy. I'll try it again Fri night. Have you bottled yours yet?

Racked it last Thursday, should be ready the 6th to go into the bottles.

Well guys the Blueberry Wheat is a bust. I just tried to draw a glass and appears that some of the little blueberry bits made it in my keg and settled at the bottom and clogged up my dip tube. I think I'm going to let the gas off and rack it into some gallon jugs and drink it as quick as possible. The taste isn't too bad but it tastes more tart then blueberry. If I ever do this again Ill definitely go with blueberry extract. It came out a little over 6% abv. PotS- I hope yours turns out better.

Yikes...we had a lot of sediment, too.

Should find out in a week, scheduled to bottle the 6th.

We were planning a Bier de Garde for Friday, something to pass the time during the day, but I think work and scheduling conflicts are going to slide that out.

Steve your sample arrived last night. Did not try yet. Will let you know for sure.

I'm sending mine out in your box lol.

I'm including a wheat I have not tried so I hope it's good.

The porter is awesome so enjoy.

Steve. Drinking your sample now and loving it.

Nice and mild easy drinker. Finishes very clean. You have to share. Is it extract? All grain?

Love it. Well done my friend.

Side note: I had one of my wheats. I enjoyed it. Nice and tart finish. Get it really cold. I'm
Happy with it.

Life long Vol and a lover of brewing and beer! Glad to see others in the craft. My Kegerator and a few beauties fermenting.

Holy smokes mike. We are not worthy!

Post Often. Looks like you know what you're doing lol. Be prepared to be called upon for advice lol.

Oh no doubt. I love brewing and meeting others who do as well. I have been a Vol fan for years and this is my first year ever having season tickets, and I look forward to bring some homebrews to taligates, so hopefully we can all get together and enjoy some nice beers.

Glad you liked it. It is a moderate beer, nothing crazy just simple and easy drinking. It was all grain as I recall, from a kit. No special treatment. We were lazy on this one and let it ferment over 2 weeks so was a bit worried. With all our kids activities, really hard to stay on top of the brewing. But it turned out good.

Here is the link of what we bought, store in Charlotte called Alternative Beverage:

German Altbier

They classify it as an Amber Ale.

Transferred the Oktoberfest into the secondary last night, and put it in the deep fridge to lager out. See ya in a couple months, big guy. Had a little taste before we plugged the carboy, beautful burnt orange color, nice 'rotten egg' smell, VERY malty, with a slight kick of hops. I'm weary of too much maltiness, but it should mellow a bit in the fridge.

Blue gets bottled tomorrow night.

Hey Steve, I got your package yesterday. Your bottle looks very professional. I got yours and USAF's boxed up and ready to ship tomorrow. You'll both be getting a bottle of Oktoberfest and a bottle of Irish Red. I have to send it FedEx though. My work will only send personal stuff FedEx, I have no idea why.

Sounds good darth. Indeed to get yours shipped.

Steve 12 is the porter and 19 is the wheat.

Can't remember if it had a label or not. Our sophisticated system is a letter in the lid, should be an A. If there is a label, ignore it. Everyone in the neighborhood drops off empty bottles to us. Haven't bought bottles since we started over a year ago.
