Historic Offense - 50 ppg?

Extremely doubtful. Look at the USC, Mizzou, and Kentucky games as examples why.

Against USC we had 38 points at half and ended the game w/45.
1. USC adjusted after the initial shellshock somewhat.
2. Heupel took his foot off the gas. Up 38 to 7, he started running clock. Still looking to score, but w/a 31 point lead, you don't want to risk several series of fast three & out series that give the ball back to the offense to catch up. Early blowouts where we can stack points in some ways work against us.

Against Mizzou we put up 62 so did hit that +50 points average. But 45 of those points were in the first half compared to 17 in the second. Again, CJH took his foot off the gas to run clock when the game was well in hand.

Against Kentucky we put up 45. It was a competitive game from start to finish where CJH kept his foot on the gas the entire game and we kept scoring. 24 in the first half and 21 in the second. But even then we didn't crack 50 points because Kentucky ran a clock-possession offense w/49 rushing attempts.

You have to go all the way back to 2013 to find a team (Baylor) that average over 50 PPG for the season. And that was in the Big12 where they don't have SEC defenses.
If the defense had gotten a few stops, I have no doubt we would have scored over 60 against Ky. They didn’t sniff stopping us. Only reason they stayed in the game is their offense limited our possessions. Maybe the craziest game I’ve watched as a UT fan.

Can this Vol offense be one of the greatest in college football history?

We have the qb, wrs, and offensive genius to make it work. Also, we have what other elite teams don’t: a slightly porous defense that means we aren’t shutting down our O in the 3rd quarter.

We play a lot tougher schedule than some of those great Os of the past, but this Vol offense is so dynamic and moves so fast, I think we’re gonna have multiple 60+ outings in SEC games. Even against the bamas and ugas we’re getting over 30.

I’m saying 70 vs Ball State and then Pitt can’t stop the pass either. Hooker will be bombing them all over the field. 35 by half. 60 by the time the clock hits :00 and we’re off to a good start for that 50 ppg threshold.
105 on Ball St.

This kind of over the top optimism is why other fanbases laugh at us.
First, who cares what other fan bases think of us
Second, ever fan base is the same. For example, Vandy thinks they are good since they beat a terrible Hawaii team, Kentucky thinks they are world beaters because they won 10 games against a crappy schedule.

For that to happen, the run game will have to be very good too. It will mean Small and Wright have made big jumps and the 2 freshmen play well.
I remember when Reggie Cobb (RIP) hit the ground dominating his first season at UT...that sort of performance, coupled with our passing attack, would be the difference between 8-4/9-3 and truly competing for SEC E...OK and stopping teams on third down and long.

Ky should be proud of a 10 win season and they have had 2 of them in the last 4 years. TN has not had a 10 win season in over 20 years...even in years with a "crappy schedule". Tennessee's offense will not surprise anyone this year as the opposing teams know what they are facing. I predict they will score less this year than last

It will depend on our line staying healthy mostly IMO

It would be awesome but highly unlikely. I think our offense takes a small step back this year. I don’t see us averaging 39 this season. I kind of feel like we caught some teams off guard last year. I don’t think that will happen this year. I could see us getting around 35 ppg.

Last year we broke the 500 mark if you include the bowl game with 511. 50points @ 13 games is 650... doable, not probable... I'm seeing more like 575 total points this year, or 45ppg.

I am genuinely curious. How do you see 50 ppg doable?

Heup and Golesh self scouted they see what other teams see… hooker has complete command of the offense much more than last year with 9 starters returning… hooker has become more efficient in the medium and short game we will be a more consistent offense and in turn will be better I bet we see much better second Quarters this year it’s been a huge emphasis… our depth will allow us to play 4 quarters with every team on the schedule.
