I agree 100%
The problem seems to be the sprint -draw concept of running the football. The backs are set deeper than standard . The QB drops in a passing drop and then hand the ball off to the waiting running back who then attacks the line.
At the point that the back receives the ball , the holes ARE THERE! but the back is 7 yards deep .
This is may work in the MAC or the lower tier conferences , but it wont work in the SEC. The linebacks are too fast . If they drop with the pass , when the diagnose run they are quick enough to get back in position ...position being with their nose in the gap or even the backfield.
In a conventional scheme , the backs are set tow yards closer . When the ball is snapped they are going full tilt at the hole and the QB does not drop but turns and stretches to the handoff . The hole opens and the back is in the hole with momentum ..worst case 3 yards.
Strangly enough when they went to the I and offset against LSU before the half ...they ran the ball well. Same thing against Bama .
They always seem to find their way back to the sprint draw . I dont feel the line is the issue . They seem to be able to get it done when put in a reasonable formation , and they pass block very well. pass blocking is harder than run blocking ...and if you watch their spint draw plays ...the hole opens but is filled quickly by an LB . This is a simple read for any LB . It creates a blocking numbers mismatch at the point of attack ..you have 5 guys blocking 7 or 8. No running back or O line coach will succeed with this scheme in this league.
Couple that with Chaneys impatient play calling and we have a major problem. We dont throw 5 yard passes , screens, waggles , come backs ...every thing is a 15 out , go , deep post . The long plays are low percentage even for the best teams ...but seems to be all that Chaney is willing to to.
Fire Chaney . Get a standard run scheme , work play action , build in the wrinkles. If they were running I form with Hunter , Da'rick and Bray ...running the ball 60% ...their offense would be unstoppable
