Heupel is so close, guys

Close? Maybe. Heupel is at a crossroad. Will he make necessary staff changes, or will he ride or die with the status quo? The answer to that question will determine his future at Tennessee.

Ah, yes. The ungrateful fanbase firing a great coach due to unrealistic expectations, ultimately sending us into a decade of turmoil. I'm excited to see how part 2 of this film turns out.
It is not unrealistic to expect us to beat Vandy.

Losing to that trash talking midget QB by double digits has pretty much killed my support of Heupel until he makes changes.

All he has to do is get a couple of top names out of the portal, overhaul his defensive staff, fix game/clock management miscues (including silly penalties), make the team tougher by fixing S&C (Vandy, Georgia, and Oklahoma whipped us in the second half), and get recruiting up into the top 5 in the SEC.
I feel the same about the strength and conditioning! It’s time to see some huge d lineman in the middle . Our interior was inferior this year and it cost us more than people realize.

Really isn’t that far off. Needs an elite dc who is a disciplinarian. Get that guy and this team can go far every year. I don’t have confidence we will do that though
DC doesn't have to be a disciplinarian. CJH should be. You never want a soft head coach and a tough disciplined assistant coach. You want it from the top down.

He should have been doing all that before last year - like after that Ohio State beat down and looking at our 2025 schedule. 2026 is not going to be easy. Just gets tougher. He looked disinterested all season - what is the reason?

Did you think about this before typing it out? A sentence or two and most would have been behind you. After the paragraph of why he is so close……well you kinda made yourself look foolish. I commend your effort though.

What are your "realistic expectations"? This is where the real problems arise within our fanbase, IMO. UT's fans CLEARLY do not share the same expectations. And that is a problem. Bama fans are in agreement as far as expectations. LSU fans are in agreement. OSU fans are in agreement. UGA fans... and on and on. We have half our fans satisfied with 8 win seasons and a Fla bowl game and the other half expects UT to play for SEC titles and the occasional chance at an NC. It's hard for me to wrap my head around when UT has proven it can win championships, but now, most fans think it's a pipe dream and they'll just keep the tailgate and the occasional win over a rival and be happy. I wish I could do that.
Make no mistake. I hate losing ANY game. I also have issues with some things. With that said, you have to look at the whole picture. If you expected us to win a championship of any sort this year, that's on you. Lost a ton of depth, along with everything that happened after spring ball. You can say we upgraded at QB but that still affects the team.

Our program hasn't had the same level of stability as those other programs in terms of success or recruiting in the last 25 years. Kirby didn't take over a team with 67 scholarship players, dealing with an investigation and probation. Ryan Day and Deboer definitely didn't.

Im not going to act like I'm ok with it. But tell me when the last coach before Heupel beat UF and Bama in the same year or won in the swamp. Not interested in how Florida isn't good because they haven't been good several times and we still lost.

Those things are true, also need to add getting serious about practice. Joey told off on them in post game press conference. The team doesn't practice as they should, meanwhile Vandy just stomped on their face. The team reflects their coach, they have no fight in them.

I do wish Heupel had more emotion ... you see other coaches hammering the refs and chewing out players sometimes... but he never does

I honestly believe that we are positioned perfectly to win it all next year!

Let's rock!!
What team are you talking about? I thought we were talking about Tennessee. Anything is possible but I haven't seen any miracles around here in awhile. Optimism is great, but I like a reality check better. I'll take reality any day and hope for the best.

I think they learned how valuable the portal could be this season..nobody including me expected Aguilar to perform like he did...I feel like our trenches just needed to be upgraded in the portal

Good points. Also... if we are talking the whole picture, this is year 5 going into year 6. Losing players, injuries, coaching changes, etc are things that should already be addressed as in establishing a plan to mitigate these situations. This staff should never be surprised by a player leaving or coach leaving or a year ending injury. It's all about preparation. Heupel and staff were caught flat footed when Nico checked out. They should've had a Plan B already in place. That's the kind of thinking it's going to take to succeed now. There is no reason we can't pay 8 QB's to be on the roster. The roster limits now are what? Over 100, right?

He needs to get a QB whole doesn’t throw the ball into a crowd and can throw it to open receivers. I do not think Joey is that guy. He had some nice games, but he laid a few eggs in 2-3 games.

And if it hadn't been for his own success in years 2 and 4, the expectations wouldn't be where they are. Not too long ago we were 4-8 in year 5 of Butch. Heupel took over a dumpster fire and has turned it into a competitive football team in 5 years. We have to build to an elite football team. I do agree we have to be willing to commit the resources to be elite. Kinda hard when you're trying to be an "everything school" when others are trying to be a football school though. We do have some young talent that has a ton of potential if given time.

Especially after playing so well in the Swamp. As bad as out defense is right now, I was bewildered by that second half game plan

I am not sold on Heupel’s game management. I was screaming for him to call a defensive timeout just before Georgia threw that long bomb on 4th down to set his defense. And again on their 2 point conversion. But heck no. He only cares about offense and it shows.

He’s just as close to driving it in the ditch. Especially with the 26 schedule. He won’t have a bunch of palookas making up 2/3 of your schedule.

One of the first things that has to be done is FIX the so called S&C program...it's awful. From getting whipped to injuries everywhere and wollering around on the ground several times per game. Our medical staff gets more yardage per game than any players....

DC and staff, Yes.....But without the proper S&C program the best defensive coaches in the country will have issues. That's 100 percent on the head coach to correct. Which leads to....in Heupel's system you will be hard pressed to find top notch S&C coaches wanting to come here. IMO if Heupel took 5 different jobs in the next 10 years...his current S&C coach will follow him to all 5.
