Heupel and head coaching decisions

How many times in sports history have we seen a player step up in the absence of another? How many times have we seen a team rally? It wasn’t Banks absence per say. It was the failure of the other players to step up. Period.

UT plays 2 linebackers. Mitchell and Beasley have both garnered starting minutes. Beasley seemed to be one of the few who was actually trying to win. It looked to me like you had a large number of players who were disinterested in being there. could it have been something else? Flu? Who knows. But, if (big if) this was a player revolt then screw every one of them. They don’t deserve to wear the orange and white. If (and that’s a big of) that’s the case.

you are going to argue with anything that is posted that does not support your assessment.
Excuses.

You take an experience leader, Player, and an intricate part out of the lineup, Then the results are 1 stop in 10 attempts.

We witnessed this all year long with Banks in the lineup and now we have witness the results without him in the lineup. Go Figure.

CJH is about the numbers, the stops, and scoring. No Banks 1 stop, Banks in 4-5 stops.

If one was trying to win there goes your mutiny theory.

If this was the Railroad company I worked for the DB coach would already have a moving van in his front door

And the ones that do make it to the pros will then suddenly realize that discontent over NIL will morph seamlessly into discontent over salary. Do they think that everyone on an NIL roster gets the same compensation? 😂😂😂
Welcome to the real world guys. You want equal pay, then professional sports is not for you. It ain’t socialism folks!
Yup.
the real problem though imo is Srs and Jrs came on a promise for a scholly only. That was market value at the time. Limited reason to spend loads of NIL $$$ on the guys once you’ve already got them.

Srs/Jrs share a locker room with Freshman and sophomores who are getting $$$ and schollys to COME and play. That’s Current market value for them.

My guess is there will be turmoil due to NIL for at least another year or two until the locker room is filled with athletes that got the same deal. They’ll go where they can get the most NIL $$$ and that’s THEIR market value.

I don’t think Banks being suspended was the reason for a pitiful defense game plan and I KNOW it wasn’t the reason for SC playing so motivated.

If JB had been out there, the score would have been 63-38 most likely.

If CJH says Jeremy Banks did something to warrant a suspension I believe him. I trust the coach more than Banks. He has let us all down in the past with his actions. I don’t think CJH would suspend the captain of his defense without warrant. I had thought the SC game would be a tough win. It was played at night, I have been in that stadium at night, and it’s a tough place to play. Did we play horrible in practically all phases, we sure did. With that said, I don’t think CJH suspends anyone for that game without warrant.

You either support the coach or a player who did wrong to begin with….. your choice.

Banks or no Banks, we give up more passing yards than the vast majority of teams in the country. SC exploited this fact and whipped our ass. That is the reality of the situation.

Exactly and thank you!

Everyone is speculating about last week’s events and the game like a damn soap opera. Come on! How can anyone think the reason we gave up NINE TDs to SC was because we were missing a LB, one player, an excellent player but ONE player.

MANY top teams played sub-par last weekend but found a way to win. We finally fell for the press/hype that said, “all Tennessee has to do is beat mediocre SC and lowly Vandy, and they’re in the CFP.” Trap game and we fell for it.

I’m in the 5th and final stage of grief (acceptance.). So let’s stop sounding like a bunch of Desperate Housewives, call it what it was and move on!

Honestly, it's a situation Heup should have never been in. If the rumors are true, I'm really not sure what Banks expected? Upset because the Heisman candidate QB is getting more $$? Welcome to football in 2022 pal.

Even worse, is the D apparently getting their panties in a wad about the whole deal. Banks swing on Hooker and Milton put a stop to the nonsense. Why the hell would the D expect Milton and/or Hooker to be punished when they were simply dealing with Banks garbage?

I said it in a post last night and will say it again. 90% of these guys career is over after their last Vol game. They may not appreciate it now, but in 15 years those guys are going to be eaten alive by what happened Saturday. I've made some doozies of mistakes in my time which I regret and keep me up at night occasionally, but nothing even close to what was thrown away Saturday.

Stop believing every rumor thrown out there...

It may sound crazy but at this point I kind of hope they did let up in this game on purpose only because it is a explanation to why it happened, wondering what went wrong sucks but at least this is a explanation and not that we've been figured out, having said that if it's confirmed I'd cut everyone involved and move forward, on another note why does this kind of thing only happen to us? The Bray game against Kentucky they admitted they threw, the ordeal with Butch and tripping over a helmet in the locker room, why us?

Heupel had to make a huge coaching decision on Saturday. It is almost indisputable at this point that a conflict happened involving Jeremy Banks. We could never know whether it was a fail drug test or something else. But he definitely was not arrested. This along with Heuple‘s refusal to elaborate on the issue gives legs to the rumors floating around.

So here’s the question… Does anybody believe a coach like Nick Saban would have suspended his defensive captain and team leader over an internal disruption/dispute that did not involve any legal issues? I’d say absolutely not. I think Saban probably understands how important continuity is and the residual effect of essentially siding with one player over another. Hell…Saban didn’t bench a wr that struck an opposing teams fan on the field despite getting ripped in the media for it.

I don’t believe the Defense came out and decided not to play hard. But we are going to play talented teams every week and there is anything off psychologically going into a game it could make a huge impact.

Think about what the ramifications of benching Jeremy banks apparently are. We had a great opportunity to go to the playoffs and have our quarterback win the Heisman Trophy. No matter how bright the future might be nobody could believe that’s going to happen here with any regularity. History says that this might be the closest Heupel ever comes. Just think 5 years down the road will he look back at the decision to bench banks with regret? Will it be the biggest mistake of his entire career? What is Heupel had pulled Jeremy Banks and others involved into a room and let them hash it out without any suspensions or anything getting out in the media. How differently could Saturday have turned out? If Jeremy Banks is out on the field and the defense is forcing some punts… Is Hendon hooker even running that play trying to lead a come back down three touchdowns late in the game? I think most people would believe that if the situation had been handled differently we’d have likely won the game and would still have Hooker at the helm.

Coaches are essentially CEO’s of billion dollar entities at this level. It’s not just teaching technique, calling plays, and creating game plans. It is so much more than that. Managing personalities and the psychology of a team going into a game is a big part of the job. And we’ll never know all the details that lead to the suspension on Saturday. But in hindsight… I sure as hell hope that suspension was warranted because the price our team paid is staggering.
What's the price on integrity? Just because we wanted him to play doesn't make it justified. Based upon what I saw, I'm sure banks would have had a positive impact but he can't make plays for the other 10 guys. Quit second-guessing the coach. Sabin is irrelevant. What he does and what we do has no bearing on how we play. Too many Monday morning QBs. Get over it. Terrible loss, yes; but's it's just a freaking football game.

If you think back about it kinda as a rasslin' match, it does explain some of our defensive woes.

Not so much the DB's. Most of them still seemed to out there trying. They were talking smack all game which tells me they were interested in winning.

But, the dozen (or so) who play DL and LB........did seem very distracted. Primarily, if Banks was out there, Rattler would have been looking thru his ear hole by mid-first quarter. The lack of QB pressure was quite puzzling.

I agree on the lack of pressure altho it didnt seem we were trying to blitz, I may have missed some but the only two times I know we blitzed one was a tackle for loss and the other would have been except for a defensive holding penalty that nullified it.

That is true. We did not blitz much. On the rare occasion that a quarterback is that hot, the only way to beat him is to hit him.

It is true of all, but to pick an example...when were Baron and Young ever so quiet in a game? Did USCjr OT's magically get great overnight.

Kind of a joke post but perhaps we put Hyatt, McCoy, Keeton, and Tillman in defense. Maybe they can actually cover wide receivers.

Two-way player, Joe Milton, scheduled to start along side Jeremy Banks at linebacker in Nashville.

I believe Heupel is an offensive coaching genius, but there is more to being a head coach than being able to drawing up the plays. If he is serious about taking the next step, he is needs to learn the right way to motivate and discipline his players so they keep their heads in the game. Being a player's coach only works in the NFL. If this is not his style, he will have to hire coordinators that can feel this role.

I am a fan of just waiting until he gets more recruits in for his system and see the result. He won enough games to give us good will. The issue with the loss is that losing to South Carolina wasn't the problem, it was how we lost to them that was alarming.
