Take your kids and DVR it.

* Avoid the radio on the way home
* DON'T take your phone if you get alerts on it or have friends that will text you during the game, I just leave mine in the car and won't look at it until I get home
* DON'T answer your phone if you have douchebag friends that call you during the game
* Look at it this way, you'll get to skip the commercials, depending on how far the show is from your house and when you get home, there is a very real possibility you might "catch up" to the live game

My wife and I got married in the fall during an off weekend.

You need to go to Elmo.

Tivo the game.

It could very easily be a very ugly game. Talk to a friend before hand and tell him you are gonna call after you get home from Elmo and ask him whether you should watch the game or not (ie, whether we make it a game or get blown out). Don't let him tell you the score, just yes or no.

Play up the whole Elmo thing with your wife. Say you really want to watch the game, but your family is more important and you will gladly go to see Elmo THIS TIME to keep the love of your life and your kids happy. This way in the future when there is a similar situation when we are competitive you can remind her about "willingly" going to see Elmo.

Ok, let me give you an example.
When I was little, my dad sold his boat to buy tickets for me to be able to go to some kiddy thing..something on ice or whatever. I don't even remember the show, but I'm staring down the age of 30 and I remember being little and not understanding it all. Being a dad now, it makes complete sense. Your kids don't need to know that daddy was sitting on his rear watching a football game when he could've been with them. No matter how HUGE the game is, no matter how miserable you'll be watching Elmo. Your kids and wife need to know they are a priority...yes even over football.
I can't imagine the sacrifice it took for my dad, but I'll never forget it the rest of my life.

Having 3 adult diehard Vol-fan children now(they would understand later in life), I'd probably suggest my wife ask her mom to go and I'd stay back and watch the game. Realistically though I think my wife , knowing how much of a Vol fan I was, would know that in advance. Elmo will always be around. The bad thing would be if it's a blow out then you lose all the way around.

In the scheme of things this is going to be a very forgettable game. You might even be glad you missed the beatdown. There is, however, a very limited number of times you will be able to do things with your kids when they are young. Don't give that privilege away in order to watch yet another in an unending string of football games, no matter who is playing.:thumbsup:

Stay home = pissed off wife that won't forgive you for a long time
Stay home = unhappy kids
Stay home = frustrated VOL fan

Go to Elmo = happy wife, may get lucky
Go to Elmo = being there 4 your kids
Go to Elmo = watch game on DVR and skip through the bad stuff

Thank God for DVR!

Oh yeah, don't tell your wife how much you are sacrificing by going to Elmo. Tell her you wouldn't miss it for the world.

BTW, I'm happily married for 19 years with 3 kids ages 14, 12 and 9 and a HUGE VOL fan.

Here is what I do in my house. I told my wife from the begining that I am a die hard vol fan and she repesects that. I said give me 4 months of football on sat and you can have 8 months. good deal if you ask me. We just celebrated out 7th year anniversary on Sept 14th. Why the 14th. Becuase when we were engaged we were scehduled to get married on the 21st. Gator week. I told her we can't do it that week. It's Gator week. So we moved it to the 14th. We have an understnding about my Vols.

Here is your dillema. You said you just became a fan so it will be way harder for her to understand. Problem is since you just became a fan and she already bought the tickets you will problay have to just suck it up and go. Nothing worse then watching a game with a pissed off wife around while your vols are getting their butt handed to them in the mean while.

dude take your kids out and have a goodtime. it's better than staying at home watching us get dialed by 40. i'm heading to a buddy's house for a cornhole tourney. don't think i'll catch any of the game to irritating.

Tell her no... she'll get mad and take them anyway. By the time you've been married 20 years she'll start asking when UT plays to make sure her plans don't conflict.:)

Also some of our close friends just got married last week on the 12th. UCLA game. So I recorded the game and I had my wings and pizza waiting at home for the game. Unfortunately in the back they had espn on all day and I saw the halftime score. Couldn't help myself. But I stayed away from radio and the TV in the back and got home cooked my wings and pizza and turned on the game only to be pissed at the end. So there you have it. record it, stay away from news, radio and tv scores and enjoy well if you can since it's UF.

I wouldn't go that far. She needs to know that this game is a Big Deal every year, so that she won't just take it for granted that you will cheerfully walk away from football on Saturday afternoons. I'd take one for the team this time, since she's got free tickets and the game is overwhelmingly likely to be miserable anyway, but she needs to know going forward that this is a big deal to you and gameday is close to sacrosanct. If it's no big deal now, then she won't understand why it's suddenly a big deal next time. You have to start as you mean to go on.

Ok, you seriously owe me for this. Here is what you do. Fix up a website to look semi-legit. Something that sounds Georgia ish. Like Peachtree Newsflash or some crap. Write a quick article on how the guy playing Elmo molested three children after the show in Tuscaloosa, AL this past Saturday and has been suspended WITH pay. This will give you your talking point "Honey come look at this, how can they still PAY this sick ******?" Then say, "I'm sure his replacement will be fine".

It can't hurt but it sure might work.

Take the kids. If you dont enjoy them having fun more than anything else you should get a reality check. They are only kids for so long and you will regret not spending every moment possible with them. I love UT but some things are more important believe it or not.

Dang it, my 6 year old is playing football this year for the first time. His first game was smack dab in the middle of the UT/Western KY game. I figured I'd dvr it, which I did. We live in Georgia too, so I also figured nobody would talk about the Vols. Well, lo and behold, they actually had a press box announcer for the game - remember, it's a six-year-old team. And guess what? I suppose the dude in the press box was a Vol fan or something, and he kept announcing the score every time the Vols scored. I was so ticked off I couldn't see straight. I still watched the dvr when I got home, of course. Now, that was the WKU game - Florida is a whole different story. Of course, if the game is anything like recent years, you'll probably want to stop watching by the end of the first quarter anyway.

Are you responsible for the vols or your family? Would you rather sleep with your wife or Crompton?> Who's more important, your children or football? In the end, who will be there for you if you brake your hip, the coaches or your kids? A lot of positive solutions on this post. Try them with the answers to these questions in mind.

Im married with no children yet but I think you gotta go dude! I missed hanging out with my favorite band back stage last saturday b/c of the UCLA game good luck.

I think it's hilarious that people insinuate that your kids and marriage will be irreparably harmed for saying no to something that was sprung on you at the last minute. Contrary to many statements here, Elmo (the Wiggles, Circus, Dora, etc) does come around most every year.

Have you ever disagreed with your wife on anything before? Did you both get over it? Do you seriously think your kids will shun you because you said no to Elmo? Besides, how much fun will you be when it's something you don't want to do anyway?

Honesty is key in any relationship.

One other tip....never ask a chat board for marital advice.

Trust me, go enjoy Elmo with your kids... if you found a way to weasel out and stay home for the game, you'd be puking and screaming like the rest of us will be.

And you'll be a hero to the ones that really matter in your life. How on earth have you lived this long without UT football anywaY?

You have been only one of a few voices of reason on here. We're talking about one Elmo show on a Sat afternoon this Sat. It's not the end of the world.
