Heisman presentation. Stick it where the sun don't shine

...a couple of comments; first, if Jerry Gibbs and Tommy MacDonald had not split their vote, T-mac would have won the 1956 H.T. going away. Finally, consider yourselves part of history. The foundation for this year's H.T. was laid on the field at Neyland when down 17-0 A walk-on QB and his first year O.C. staged the biggest come back in OU history. As our freshman Offensive left tackle controlled Derrick Barnett our walk-on QB out played Josh Dobbs and further established in Sooner fans minds that SEC football is a one trick pony headquartered in Tuscaloosa.

He didn't walk on at Oklahoma, he was already a Big 12 starter when he transferred there. Let's relax with the whole Rudy storyline

Love it when Sooner fans go there. Nevermind that 4 teams from that one trick pony conference have won national titles since that last one y'all got during the Clinton administration.

Yes he did. Call it what you wanna call it but the sports world calls it walking on.

It was a weird situation. Texas Tech was weird about his playing time and putting him on scholarship. Then there was a lot of back and forth between Texas Tech, Oklahoma and the Big 12 over when he'd be eligible to transfer, how many years he'd be eligible and when OU could put him on scholarship.

Get over it. He lost. Woodson won. People one here act like their life revolves around UT sports. It’s weird and sad.

Huge difference between recounting what actually happened and having your life “revolve around it”. Absolutely nobody has their life revolve around it, including Peyton. Nothing wrong with discussing it, accurately, all these years later.

I watched the very end of the Heisman presentation last night to see Mayfield, who I really enjoy watching play, win it. Otherwise, I was watching TommyBoy for the 800th time .....that strike you as someone who’s life revolves around Manning getting screwed out of the award 20 years ago?

20 years later and I haven't forgotten the obvious politically correct shun of a vol legend. The ridiculous campaign to give Woodson the trophy over Manning FOREVER delegitimizes this so called award . I refuse to watch to this day. Anyone more tolerant and forgiving than me?

Yep. Manning didn't deserve it. He folded up like a cheap chaise lounge at Florida and then didn't play very well in the last game of the year against Vandy. It isn't a career award.

Because it was covered up, everyone forgets about him dropping his bare ass and sack in a female reporter's face in the locker room. That act alone could have ended his playing career.

I just find it "ironic" that Herbstreet went out of his way to defend Mayfied for the same behavior and attitude that he thought Gauden should have been kicked off the team for 🤔. If anyone can find that tweet from him, please embed it.

So what you’re saying is that some sort of trophy was given out last night?

Can’t say I paid any attention to it as football is a team game.

Great teams win, not individual players.

Peyton was a lock to win it that year, the networks needed a tight race and drama. So they hyped up another player so they could have some intrigue, controversy and just something to hear themselves talk about. There were no other offensive players having great years so they shined on Woodson. In the end they got caught up in their own hype train.

Everybody in America remembers that punt return, but only TN fans remember what else happened that day. Manning three for 500 yards and 5 TDs. But ESPN didn’t cover the SEC then like they do now. Maybe CBS had exclusive SEC rights? Idk

If you’re referring to the SEC championship game, that wasn’t played on the same day as OSU/Mich. UT played Vanderbilt that day and Peyton didn’t play well at all. The sec title game was the following week and was broadcast by ABC.

Horse crap! If UT beat FL by 7 touchdowns, it would not have mattered. It was about TV ratings. When Michigan beat OSU, they had to find a reason to hype the Rose Bowl (Mich vs Wash St). The Rose Bowl had refused to join the BCS and the focus was on the Orange Bowl (UT vs Nebraska) as the BCS National Championship game. ABC aired the Rose Bowl and owned ESPN. Therefore, ESPN went on a rampage to hype Woodson.

This makes zero sense. The 1998 Orange Bowl was not the bcs title game, the bcs wasn’t started until the next season. The rose bowl didn’t refuse to join the bcs, if they had the bcs would have never been created. They did refuse to join the Bowl alliance prior to the creation of the bcs.

wait politically correct? was that a slick sideways racial slur? Should Peyton have won that Heisman on body of work? Probably. But Woodson winning it was not the upset most try to claim. He proved it later on in the NFL the guy was special. The Heisman is not about being the best college player. It is about being the best player on the best team in the spotlight.

Peyton didn't have a legendary game that year. Because Peyton just put up stupid numbers every year and it was expected. But the whole can't bne Florida thing held him back. Woodson on the other hand won the Heisman on one play.. the one handed int vs

The week of the Heisman Trophy announcement in 1997, Archie Manning was talking to a sports writer in Knoxville about his son Peyton, the star quarterback for Tennessee.

Manning: "How do you think the Heisman race will go?''

Writer: "Peyton will win. There aren't enough Heisman voters dumb enough to pick Charles Woodson.''

Manning: "I'm not so sure. I think the momentum has swung Woodson's way.''

Manning was right. Woodson had the momentum, and he would soon have the Heisman Trophy. - writer =jimmy hyams 1997

Woodson vs Ohio state (Michigans Florida) caught the reception that set up[ his teams winning TD and also returned a punt for a touchdown. Same year he had an insane 1 handed int VS Michigan State another huge rivalry game. Body of work Peyton wins, but the Heisman is a feelings vote its about who excited you most. Peyton was so dominant through his career as a QB he didn't excite most because he was expected to do the things he did all the time. Woodson did that thing not every game but showed up on the big stage at opportune times.

Actually Dobnail boot game we had our version of Woodson. JJ.

Lets be real it sucks Peyton didn't win the Heisman. that being said Woodson winning should be no surprise given the history of he award. Who does the most over the season and in big games the last few weeks. Michigan won the Natty that year and Woodson played a part in every game. UT didn't quite make it and we lost the only game that mattered that year for Peyton's heisman hopes.

You must be younger than me. Life makes you bitter and cold 😂

I think just the opposite - that older age gives you much more tolerance and perspective. I was absolutely flabbergasted when Peyton was not named the Heisman winner! Was it a raw deal? Certainly for Vol fans it was but Michigan fans were every bit behind their man and I guarantee you that everyone of them was as shocked as I was on that outcome. Peyton has exemplified over the years every attribute the Heisman Trophy requires. BTW, I’m a Vol fan since I was 15 when Dewey Warren and Gary Beban (UCLA) met in 1965. As you mentioned maturity and how it affects one’s outlook, I am absolutely amazed at so many here on Vol Nation who seemingly just rant and rave and want to fire coaches and administrators if they don’t immediately produce. I for one am glad PF is back in the fold and I see great things ahead! Go Vols.🏈

Ill take whatever you say as the gospel. Especially if you are really a b17 pilot. I had a friend in church that recently passed tbaat was a waist gunner in a b17 . Flew over 20 missions over Europe. I'm in awe.

OK, the "Bowl Coalition Title Game." Same story. The fact is still the fact.
