Was totally blind sided by Barnes with the whole UCLA debacle. Fulmer learned about it through the papers. Barnes was gone. Fulmer was ready to move on and start the search, but a few big boosters went to him and told him whatever it takes, keep him here. Then phil got Barnes the phat contract with the big money. - Story From a personal friend of Phil so May have been a little biased but hey, info is info.

Me personally, I still look at Barnes a little differently now than I did previously. Have no doubt he is a good coach and we are lucky to have him, but still feel a little blind sided myself.

Regardless, I’m still excited about the season. But if we struggle this year and miss the bubble, there is gonna be a lot of barking and bitterness bc of the aforementioned items even more so and questions about the contract. Either way, we are in for an exciting season. GBO 🍊

I thought it was Fulmer who was out of town?

In any case, I think everyone was blindsided by this, UCLA and Barnes included. Barnes probably never imagined UCLA would call upon a 60-something year old coach who had never coached on the west coast, and UCLA probably never imagined they'd have to call on their 4th or 5th choice. They almost had two other coaches hired before it fell thru.

Let's the the season play out before we start predicting bitterness.

I thought I read somewhere that Barnes recently said TN would be his last gig. I’m sure he’s not happy about how everything transpired except for the fact he got a huge raise. Deserved? Probably.

Barnes has built a roster full of players with this high level BB IQs and talent, that are extremely well disciplined and hard working, and have such great character. I've never seen any UT coach check so many boxes except for Pat. Even if the elusive Final Four doesn't arrive on his watch I'm not going to ever regret his tenure as the UTHC. He's built something special. All we need now is some good luck for a change in the post season. Getting bounced on a phantom foul versus Purdue last year isn't something that a coach can fix. But maybe the Reverend can competently counter an old nun's prayer for a lucky bounce on a buzzer beater.

Unless something drastic happens, I don’t know how you can’t consider his tenure an overall success, especially considering when he took over

I agree.

I was his biggest fan until the UCLA deal went down.

He might not be a HOFer but he's damn close.

If he did not at least look seriously at UCLA, he should have been smacked. They are a blue blood, we are not

In the world of the 24/7 news cycle you believe Fulmer learned of this through the papers?

Yep. Not sure I could work for Fulmer.

Not sure I believe the initial story either.

There are some football fans that wish the worst on the basketball program
And I’m not one of those FYI if that’s what you’re insinuating. I support the b-ball team as much if not more than the football team. Never have been big on following recruiting in either sport, but I keep up with the product on the floor pretty intently.

I don't mind "paying him what he is worth" and surely don't begrudge his feeling he was worth more. What I dislike is the way he/or his agent handled the situation. Now, if he asked Phil for more money and was turned down then it was very likely the only way to get a raise. If this was the case, then more power to him. But had it been me, I guess I would have adopted the position that "if is was not worth it when I asked for a raise, why am I worth it now? see you later)

Entertaining a job offer without letting your employer know is a **** move whether you work at chick fila or are a head coach.
That's not the way it is in my world. Unless you have some skill or knowledge that can't be replaced, If your employer knows you're looking for a job, they immediately decide that you're not committed to the team. If you're looking for another job or you're trying to bluff, you'd better be ready to go.

I get what you are saying, but many times when the employee gives this employer this heads up, he is gone....(if you don't like us we don't need you, go) Now, this is before HR took over running the business world. I guess now you should give the person a hug and kiss and ask is there anyone you would like us to contact for you and tell them how great you are and what a loyal and valued employee you are?

This is not true or realistic at times, especially for lower-level employees. You inform your employer after you already have an offer from someone else, otherwise you risk not having a job at either place. Informing your employer after you have am offer allows them to counter in an attempt to keep you, or to wish you well on your way.
