Can you point out any missed calls before that? it was a home game they are gonna get an advantage in calls just like we will when we are home team. I watched the game.. the refs had nothing to do with the outcome. Unless Staley is a secret ref.
We get calls at home? Did you see the Arkansas game?

This is going to be a bad opinion in this room, but I honestly felt last Saturday was probably the most fair TSIO game I've seen called in the last twenty years.
Vols had 10 penalties called for 66yds
Gumps had 7 called for 59yds

7 yards was not the difference in this game.
It's not the yardage of the penalties, it's the TIMING of when it's called that breaks backs.

Good lord…..it’s his uncle for crying out loud
And then his uncle should've said to him during the off-season, "listen kid, I love ya, but if I end up officiating a game you're in, it'll feel like I never even met you. Can't show any appearance of partiality. Gonna call every game fair, and I know you wouldn't expect me to do any different."

The fact he clearly never had that conversation, never even thought it might be a good idea, says this fella is failing. Doesn't matter if there was any impact on the game. He is still failing as an impartial referee for the Southeastern Conference.

Except it’s not. If Aguilar and a ref hugged before a home game because they knew each other you wouldn’t have cared one bit
It is absolutely inappropriate. Doesn't mean the refs did anything to throw the game, but it is still inappropriate.

In fact, the officiating crews ought to be held to a similar standard the members of the CFP committee meet. Their affiliations, with any team, coach or player, should be declared prior to each season, and the SEC office that manages the referee crews should be required to slate them so that there is no conflict of interest in any game.

They're clearly not doing that yet. Amateur of them not to have thought that through.

If Aguilar had hugged a ref and we ran Bama out of the gym at home 37-20, you really think there would be a thread dedicated to how inappropriate it was for the ref and Aguilar to hug before the game? You sure that’s the hill you want to die on?

I'm not sure why you think this is such an important issue, to ANY of us, to talk about dying on hills over it. This is just a conversation.

And yes, I'm sure my opinion is valid. And appropriate. And right.

A referee should comport himself with an air of impartiality throughout any contest he officiates, including before and after. Hugging and smiling and chatting with Aguilar would be just as wrong. Whether anyone would make a thread about it is another matter. Do you honestly expect a fan of any team to call out the refs for ANY penalty that went in his team's favor? Do you not understand the nature of fandom?

Go Vols!

QB’s dad is the head Coach at UT Martin, they probably have relationships with refs and other people in sports all over the south.

Understood. But the ref needs to keep it professional.

I knew a lot of judges as a lawyer, but we didn’t hug in the courtroom before a hearing.
