He's half right. The state legislature doesn't make the coaching hire. However, the University of Tennessee is a large public land grant institution. It does not answer to shareholders like a for profit, but ultimately answers to the state of Tennessee and the various communities that the campuses are located in. It is there to serve the people of this great state who serve as the shareholders. Management at UT's Knoxville campus is responsible not only to the board of trustees but to the community and state at large. When shenanigans such as what has been happening with this coaching hire go on, it is a right thing for the citizens to contact their state representatives to voice disapproval. Frankly, Jimmy Haslam should stay out of the coaching search as he has proven to be an abject failure in competence with this task.
