Halzle, Pope sign 2 year contract extensions

I wondered if Sims would be let go, when i saw the list of expired coaches, mainly because we didnt sign a rb in this class, seeing that hazle and pope are signed and he isnt makes me think that is the case

the list that has been floating around is not accurate. I learned today. Some guys, like Inge, signed a MOU in the spring... the only tow on expiring contracts in February are Garner and Schmitz

Keen observation.
If Sims goes, wonder who's out there that can be had to replace as RB coach.

Also, while the RBs took a step back this year, it wasn't a bad performing group.
Seems like the transfer, Star, wasn't all he was billed to be but the two returning guys had good seasons.
Why would you say the RBs took a step back? Sampson was POTY but Bishop was just solid and Lewis didnt play much. It was kinda all Sampson.
I also feel like star overperformed or as expected, as most thought he'd be 3rd string and he had a really solid 1st half of the season.

Who had a good season besides Bishop?

crazy to me... not a shot at any of the other coaches...

but when we have heard remarks from A.Price and C.Low that there would be at least one or two staff changes.... and now to see every coach re-sign an extension with exception of Garner which is kind of a surprise to me...when he has hands down been our best recruiter and coach on our defensive staff.

even if he signs an extension, that means all the staff returns with exception of DC and I guess a safety positional coach.. but losing Garner would be tough loss, and would require a high end replacement.
These extensions were prior to us hiring the new DC. We can still make changes and pay buyouts

Halzle was being pursued as well I guess? Pope staying is good.
Not sure a school would make a run at him if they felt he wasn't actually calling the plays and coordinating the offense. Maybe Heupel sees promise with him and will turn the offense over to him sooner rather than later? That would free him up to just be the boss, but I just can't shake the feeling that Heupel lives for offense and he's not ever going to give it up. Maybe Halzle is just the front man he wants and is going to keep him with a nice, comfortable salary?

So every on-field coach, with the exception of Garner, has a new deal.

“Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Joey Halze and wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope agreed to two-year extensions through the 2027 this month, and tight ends coach Alec Abeln, running backs coach De'Rail Sims and linebackers coach William Inge all inked one-year extensions through the 2026 season in February. Offensive line coach Glen Elarbee signed a two-year extension through the 2027 season in May.

With outside linebackers coach Levorn Harbin getting a new two-year deal to go with his offseason promotion and secondary coach Willie Martinez signing a two-year extension to his expiring contract in the offseason, the only Tennessee coaches now on expiring contracts are defensive line coach Rodney Garner and Director of Competition Development Kurt Schmidt.”
Seem to recall reading that was Knowles modus operandi. Maybe he feels like Knowles can whip them into shape or Heupel forced him to keep the defensive staff?

Really wanted a clean slate on the defensive side. Guess that's just not to be. Hope it works out.

Hard to take the program seriously if we’re bumping Halzle’s pay. It’s as weak a move as hiring Knowles was strong.
Let’s let him take this offense to Florida. He may not call the plays but he knows what we do.

C Low specifically told swain that Knowles was free to make changes and indicated that he probably would

don't think staff decisions are final.. these revised timeline / numbers on the contracts were done last spring and just never announced..

The only coach on that side I would retain is Coach RG for the defensive line; everyone else can be replaced.
Martinez has done an elite job with the Cornerbacks. Both from HS in Gibson and All SEC true freshman Redmond...and from the portal in All American McCoy and Hood who will both be 1st day draft picks and some projections have going in the 1st round. He has developed 18yo kids into top of the league caliber (Redmond graded out 4th highest in the SEC this season by PFF) and he has improved the skillsets and performance of those transfer guys McCoy and Hood until they are top of the draft Corners. We will have Gibson and Redmond back next season and be stout at Cornerback despite losing 2 Corners in the 1st couple rounds of the draft this season which is amazing and extremely hard to do at any school.

I wasn't sure about Martinez myself the first 2 years or so under CJH...but what he has done the last couple years developing and putting All SEC and All American Corners on the field has been elite. Going into next season with 2 very good Corners already developed with both having multiple years of eligibility remaining is a luxury we haven't had in forever at UT... and NONE of the Corners I listed above were high 4* or 5* guys out of HS either. Their talent was spotted and developed by Martinez and our staff. I think we have to keep him as well as Garner/Chop

We will now after the portal what things look like for 2026. I think the coaching staff will be determined in the next week-10 days. Next year could be super of at least above average. Depends mostly on QB play. How quickly can our Freshman QB hit the field will determine the outcome.
