Had Kiffin Stayed

I know I was. You know what Gator fans down here did when Kiffin was hired? They shut the hell up.

Until they smacked us down with Kiffin as the coach.... And then the joke was on us.

I agree he looked like a good hire when it was made. But, his track record as a head coach since that time has proven otherwise. And it has less to do with his okay record and more to do with his conduct.

You worshippers can go on and on about how great he is, but you cannot escape the reality of his overall head coaching record...and it is good, but not stellar. He is 35-21 as a college head coach (.625 winning percentage, which equates to around a 8-5 record in a 13-game season). And it isn't like that includes stints at bottom feeders on his way up. He has coached two all-time relevant programs.

And let's not forget the hostess issue, the wrecked car, the jersey swapping, the deflated footballs, etc.

And if you throw in his disaster in the NFL in Oakland.... Al Davis was nuts, but he had Kiffin pegged perfectly. And it didn't take him long to figure it out.

Now, contrast that with Butch, who all of you want to bash at every turn. He is a terrible coach, right? His record is 80-48 as a college head coach (.625, EXACTLY THE SAME as Kiffin). So, you want to replace Butch with essentially the same coach?

The only difference between the two is that Butch runs a clean program and is a solid, but not flashy, human being who generally does right by the school. Whereas, Kiffin is a loud mouth jerk who has little regard for the rules and will constantly embarrass your school. I guess some of you are still pining away for the latter, but I will take Butch over Kiffin any day.

Yea we know depth doesn't matter in football. Just play the starters the whole game.

Yeah, they only played 22 players that year. Most teams with zero depth are preseason #1's. Funny they went 4-7 over his last 11 games. 6-2 the rest of the year after being fired.

Really?

I seem to recall them getting pretty verbal that spring/summer when they thought that Kiffin had been the only SEC coach not to vote Tim Tebow preseason All-SEC quarterback.

Although it turned out it was actually Steve Spurrier who didn't.

...not to mention they were just coming off of winning a national championship the year before, so I kind of doubt it for that reason as well.

Really?

I have a feeling Kiffin would have beaten two of the three-Oklahoma/Florida/Arkansas in '15 had he been the coach of the exact same team. Maybe all three of them!

But, he would have also lost a game or two he shouldn't have! Like Butch!

Why are yall in denial?? If Lane had not left for his dream job,we would be #2 behind ma in the nation now, with a Naty or 3. I have been saying this all along. Iunderstand his departure. If I was Hc at Ohio St and the UT jobcame calling, see ya butch eyes! It was simply bad timing in the NCAA universe. I am not mad and see it truthfully as the OP.

What is this based off of? If hes sucha great coach why doesnt he have a better job?

Your perception doesn't square with the facts. Kiffin lost plenty of stinkers at UT and USC. Anybody remember the Ole Miss beat down?

And Butch has lost his share. That is how you get a career .625 winning percentage.

I'm not saying Butch has proven to be a great coach, either. All I'm saying is that they are about the same, and both are in the good-but-not-great tier.

Although I would bet that Kiffin becomes a lifetime coordinator after his stint at FAU. Talk about being sent down to the minors.... He will miss the luxuries at UT and USC in a hurry down there.

With so much uproar pertaining to the new AD hire and Butch's lack luster coaching the last two-three years, how do you, VN experts, think the program would be right now?

I think Hammy would still be here.

I think the football program would be much, much better off! Would have beaten Bama at least once in the past seven years. But, we would have still lost a game or two each year we should have won.

Would have had more talent on the roster. (More attrition also)

After his initial push to get Tennessee on the map by way of attention, there would be no more secondary violations. (Hamilton stated that CLK told him he was going to do things to get the UT name back out there)

There would be no shortage of incidents or stories to talk about.

And finally, one of you great posters would probably have a stepson named Knox right now!

Let it go!!! That's been 7-8 years ago. He did us a favor by leaving

Truthfully, how many of ya'll went bonkers when he was hired? Most, if not all were extatic when he came here!

I don't recall it that way. I certainly wasnt ecstatic......more cautiously optimistic. I thought it was a curious hire given that he'd really struggled as a head coach with the Raiders and that he had no college head coaching experience. I thought he did a really good job based on how the team played most of the season. Obviously in hindsight, he was a train wreck and borderline disaster for the program.

KB, I'll be honest. I hadn't even heard of him before he was hired. Right off the bat I didn't like him because he didn't carry himself as a Tennessee guy. I will say when he flipped those recruits that caught my attention.

Pretty sure Bryce Browns saga ends totally different as well as JJ and Da'Rick

but we would be thug U and likely looking at the very least an NCAA investigation.

Can't even imagine this being a topic worth talking about.Kiffin well never deserve to even own an orange pencil much less a Vols cap . IMO

He'd have been kicked off the team bus at 2:00 a.m. in Knoxville instead of LA.

In the three years at USC after leaving UT, Kiffin proved to be a horrible head coach. USC always gets outstanding talent for its football team. Kiffin totally destroyed team chemistry in his three year stint as the team broke into various cliques that where 'fighting' with each other.

It is quite likely he would have produced the same results at UT topped off with his questionable recruiting ability and poor judge of talent. He did UT a GREAT service by leaving when he did. (UT did itself no favors in the choice of a successor coach, but that was not Kiffin's fault)

Kiffin is a very good offensive coach, but he is proven (to date) to be a disaster as a head coach.

I for one was not happy about Kiffin being hired and you can go back over my posts from that time to see i'm not lying lol...I thought he was a good recruiter and nothing else...He was horrible at Oakland and made some really stupid play calls while he was there...And yes i'll admit my choice was...Get ready.......Mike Leach....Yeah I know...I thought he would pump some excitement into the program and thought it would be cool seeing orange and white pirate flags on the VOL navy boats...Thank god those days are behind us......Oh wait......

If Kiffin had stayed, he would have been fired about a year earlier than he was fired at USC. UT would be about were they are now...

Kiffin would not have coached at Bama. Would have ended up a OC at an top 25 school.

We would be on probation and facing sanctions. Simple as that.
It's not that simple. There's no evidence of him doing anything that would have got us on probation. He had nothing to do with the USC probation. That being said. I am glad he's not here, but not for that reason. He's a good coach, but too immature to be head coach at a power 5 like UT

Other factors determine success along with ability. I am mainly pointing out that he is hated for what he did to us,but if looked at logically and unbiased,it is not malicious. I speak only of his departure. I do believe he is better than the other coaches we've had since and will continue to till proven wrong. Go Vols!
