Reason number 11,438 why gun control is broken in this country, and demonizing guns has gone way way too far.

The incident happened in May at Dwight Rich School of the Arts in Lansing after a student allegedly brought a loaded gun to school.

Kid does pretty much everything right, and gets punished for it because muuuuhhhhhh guns are bad.
One student gives another student, 11 yo, a loaded pistol to hold for him. This kid then goes to class and unloads the gun, throws away the bullets, and disassembles the gun, hiding the pieces, because he knew guns weren't allowed and didn't want anyone hurt. That kid gets expelled. Even after the school learns the truth of the matter they keep him expelled. Because guns are bad.

Yeah he should have told an adult, but surely that flaw is not worth explussion. He didn't tell an adult because he was scared what reporting it would mean. Turns out his fears were right. He was scared of how people would react to him doing the right thing because guns have been demonized to the point of guilt by association.

This clearly needs to change.

My son was in 1st grade. His uncle gave him a Keychain that had a tiny, I mean tiny, less than 1" overall handgun on a length of chain. His teacher saw it on his desk. He knew he was a hood kid, I always taught my kids to be kind and respectful especially to adults. He whispered to him to put it away and don't bring it back. He later told me he could be suspended for that. He said there were teachers that would without question get him suspended. I thanked him for using common sense. This was in rural knox county.

This is a good place to start... glad my home state stepped up.

New Tennessee law requires gun safety course in schools

Tennessee is the first to pass a law requiring gun safety training in schools, teaching kids how to navigate guns in their homes and communities, especially in a state where firearms are prevalent.

Yeah that makes sense as a good way to handle things. I would get it if this was a repeat occurrence type thing, but from the article this was the first of any type of "offense" by the kid.

Kid should have been quietly thanked, explain that he did the right thing, and that it's ok to trust the adults. But due to the way things were handled, he learned to not trust adults, and doing the right thing gets you punished.

He didn't do "pretty much everything right", he pretty much did everything wrong in today's climate.

I can see taking the gun just to get it away from the kid, and then going straight to a staff member.

if you leave the gun with the first kid, getting it away later may not be so easy/bloodless.

also someone with a gun telling you to do something is usually a pretty compelling argument for most people, I imagine an 11yo knew that logic.

While I don't think this kid handled the situation correctly he didn't deserve to be expelled. Expulsion is counterproductive IMO, the kid deserved corporal punishment or in-school suspension. School is supposed to be for learning so expelling a kid teaches them nothing, save expulsion for repeated problems or egregious acts.

Have some degree of punishment but make a point of saying it's clear he was trying to do something right but could have done better. (mens rea and all) Learning experience and all that. Just chucking the kid will do the him no good and quite possibly (even likely) do harm.

The district said in its statement that "the full account of the incident has not been reported" but that it could not comment further because of privacy laws.

"Disciplinary action would not have been warranted for disarming another student," the district said.

There might be some other reason the kid got the max penalty.....not sure what it could be......
