Guitars.. What you got?

I picked up some Firebird pickups and I'm about to swap them into an Epiphone Coronet (currently dogear P90) and Wilshire (currently 2 soapbar P90s - gonna replace the neck). I'll post updates if it works out. Both these guitars are worth looking at if you like SGs but want something different.

Interested to see what you think about the Firebird pickups. I've been researching pickups over the last week to see what I wanted to go with to replace the Fralin P90s in my Novo. I considered some Lollar Firebird pickups but ended up pulling the trigger on a used set of Ellisonic pickups yesterday. I might circle back to the Firebirds if the Ellisonics don't hit the mark. I'm hoping for a little more clarity and more of the acoustics of my semi-hollow to come through.

well, the dogear option isn't working - the adapter plate doesn't fit.

the only other swap I did was some Fralin Steelpole 43s (p90 ish) strat pickups - did a loaded pickguard with 3 of them in a Mexican strat. They sound great. Hope to get to the firebird swap in the next couple weeks.

Well, I ended up doing the dog ear version in my Coronet. Cavity wasn't deep enough for the screws I had but the dremel fixed that. I may have messed up the adjustability - I think the nuts are spinning when I used the screws to raise or lower the pickup and it looks like it might need to be raised a bit - output really drops when dialing back the volume. I'll try some shims to test it eventually. I used the neck pickup from the set even though it's a bridge position dog ear - still it's plenty bright; brighter than the P90 and a bit more of that humbucker sound. Really rocks with some gain. I'll post some pictures in a bit. Was it worth it? Yes for the experience of doing some modding and I like the look. I have another single P90 guitar so it's good to have something different. Haven't used it enough to know how it does with good cleans.

the after shots - you'll have to imagine the before with the black dog ear p90

Looks great. Interested to see how you think they compare to the P90 after more play.

I've had a busy last few days on the guitar front. Swapped out the pickguard on my Novo from black to aged pearloid and got a Lucky Dog in a trade yesterday. I was planning to flip the Lucky Dog because I'm not fond of pink (this one they called Hubba Bubba), but it sounds so dang good. It's slightly heavier than my son's Lucky Dog with this being Swamp Ash and his Basswood, but it's still light. This one has a slightly fuller more traditional sound and his is a little more direct. The picture below is from Lucky Dog when it was new and had Bare Knuckle rails in it but it has more traditional t-style Lucky Dog pickups in it now.

I was on GCs website looking at used equipment the other night. There was a 1954 Strat located in the Hollywood, Ca store for $135,000. Hollychit! I sure would like to know who the previous owner was.

Did another trade this weekend and ended up with a 2025 Fender Custom Shop 63 Tele. We'll see how long it sticks around. My Novo isn't going anywhere, but my #2 electric guitar is almost always up for trade so I can try new stuff. This Tele is really nice though.

An update on the Tele. When I got it, the wound strings all made more of a thud than a ringing note. The strings looked great, but I've learned over the years that strings will go dead over time even without any play...so they looked nice and clean and even felt fine...but they were dead. The guy I got it from said he never really played it because he has an original 56 Telecaster. I put some new D'addario XS strings on it and it came to life. All strings ring out beautifully and the entire guitar is really resonant. In my experience, these Fender guitars sound more dead than anything else I've picked up once the strings are dead. Maybe something to do with the bolt on neck and both examples for me had the usual alder body. Who knows...but it's night and day. I absolutely love this tele and it's a great complementary guitar to my Novo. Neck shapes are almost identical...the Tele is solid body and alder while the Novo is hollowbody and swamp ash. Very happy.

I've got an itch for a hollow body electric without a whammy bar. I've been browsing Gretsch, Ibanez, Epiphone, and a few other cheapo off brands. Trying to stay under $800 with a hard case.

I've played a used Gretsch that was priced around $500 that punched well above its price. That would be where I would look first.

Thanks for the input. I've never even handled one. Used would be fine. I'll hit Ciderville and GC to see what they have. I'm sort of weary of pawn shops, but not ruling them out.

GC has a great return policy. I've never hesitated to buy used online from them knowing I can get a full refund returning it to my local GC.

Keep your eye out for a deal on a gently-used T5, as well. It's an awesome, versatile instrument with that buttery Taylor neck! I got mine for right at 1k. I've bought several guitars on Reverb with no issues, whatsoever.
