Guarantano "Erratic" at Manning Camp

Interesting as he is improving under center. JG must be excited. For the first time in his college career he actually has a real QB coach and OC.

This is a great point all of UTs QBs have the potential to start under Tyson Helton.

Helton is an expert at coaching up QBs and building the offense to their strengths.

I see each QB we have improving significantly. Each one has the ability to start if they put in the work and listen to Helton. He has done great things with the QBs he has coached up. I believe the QB position no matter the starter will be very good this year.

Go Vols!

My son went to the Manning Passing Acadamy last week. My son is only 16 years old but he did say that JG was one of the most impressive QB's there.

... in all the multiple one seasons that he has played thus far. :shades:

Yes. I just don’t get an outstanding feeling about him like I did with a Dobbs, Ainge, Clausen, Manning etc. I want him to do great, I’m just not feeling it with him. I don’t see him as the type where he’s gonna put the game on his shoulders and take a leadership role. God bless him for putting up with Jones and sticking around, but I just can’t get excited. I wanna be wrong because I like the guy.

Last year, Guarantano was running for his life nearly every play. It shouldn't be any wonder why he could be perceived as erratic. Unless all he was going to do was throw screens or swing passes instead of throwing down the field or run plays, he was scrambling or eating grass. That O line didn't do much protecting and it cost UT almost 3 qb's, it seemed that McBride played hurt the last game or two because there was nobody left.

TuskTimes, what's your perspective on why the better qb of the two was the one to leave?

That could be a long list given his status when he left. Leaving as a graduate transfer, no penalty. Going home to Texas is a bonus. Playing behind a guy that was a recent converted QB from WR and doesn't have that many starts under his belt might make him more hopeful about playing time.

But mostly, here comes a new coaching change and a change in schematics. I suspect comfort with the new system and coaching staff played a big part, it usually does.

Good points ChizZleVOL --

and, per the photo with the Mannings, JG was "ecstatic" to be at the camp (so, I'm happy to see he's happy and enjoying his college days).

JG has descent accuracy and a strong arm that most Division l coaches love. Doesn’t seem to be very shifty when he scrambles so I don’t really consider him a DT QB.

Really the main issues I’ve seen is his instincts.

You either have it or you don’t.

I’d like to see him not hang on to the ball too long like a sitting duck waiting to take a sack.

I don’t believe none of our QBs on the roster got proper coaching from the previous staff so I’m going to withold my judgment until I see him play this season.

He’ll be the starting QB until otherwise.

Not the news I was hoping to here. The QB competition could be very interesting during fall camp.

Analyst: Vols' Guarantano 'erratic' but talented, hard worker

Jarrett Guarantano’s performance over the weekend at the annual Manning Passing Academy was something Tennessee fans should be familiar with, according to veteran Louisiana sportswriter, broadcaster and NFL Draft analyst Mike Detillier, who watched Guarantano at the event.

Detillier spoke with former former Tennessee wide receiver and current Knoxville radio host Jayson Swain on Wednesday morning, and his scouting report on Guarantano should sound familiar: big arm, talented arm, inconsistent but working extremely hard to change that.

“I’ll be honest with you, he was a little erratic throwing the ball, but that didn’t surprise me, because he’s working with receivers that he’s never worked with,” Detillier told Swain on The Swain Event. “You come here, you don’t bring the Tennessee Volunteer wide receivers with you. He’s working with receivers from Tulane, LSU, Nicholls State, Southeastern [Louisiana].

I'm not really buying the WR explanation. If that were true, wouldn't all of the QB's at the camp be "erratic"? I hope Helton helps him a great deal, but I'm starting to think Christ was brought in for more than just "motivation".

"a little erratic" could be used to describe almost all of the Vols team, NO?:)

Damn right!

If UT had won 6 games, Vol fans could still puff their chests out and boast about that all-worldly stat...:dance2:

Well just looking at the stats don't see how Chryst takes the job. 78 of 144 54 percent 962 yards passing and 4 int's

JG 86 of 139 62 percent 997 yards 2 int

Neither is what you want but certainly Chryst is not a savior more or less an adequate guy that could play if JG stinks or gets injured.

If JG can get his decision making way better and quit taking so many sacks for holding the ball to long he can be a lot more efficient. Depending on how much we throw 250 passes would equal 155 completions for 1800 yards. So the same percentage and 300 throws would be 2150 yards.

He seems to have everything but experience relating to his play last season. If the OC and QB coach can coach him up in the mental game will certainly take 62 percent completions and 2 int's per 90 throws and around 12 yards per completion.

The big problem drive killing sacks and complete indecision on when to pull it down and run.
