Gruden?

The biggest down side, IMO, is there is no doubt that you'd have to pay him an exorbitant amount of money and offer a very pro-JG contract. So, if he did bomb, the setback would be FAR greater than any of the others we've had since the parting of ways with CPF.

No doubt about that. Its scary to even think about, but that's obviously one of the biggest reasons it'll never happen.

IMO.

who wouldn't want to come here and play for him..with all his NFL contacts he would sure get the best players just like Saban does..we would be the #2 stepping stone to the NFL behind bammer...I could live with that...as long as we beat bammer every now and then...

You ABSOLUTELY break the bank on him if he's the right guy. That's what Bama has done with Saban and it has paid off with monumental returns. Saban is everything at Bama. We make more revenue in football than Bama does and there is no excuse if they truly want to win NOT to break the bank on the best HC. Is it Gruden? I don't know...but whoever it is you cannot let money be an object.

Like I said, he is a risk. I have no problem breaking the bank on a sure thing. I just don't see how Gruden is.

Kids know he knows football. Especially NFL. People would call him for a job. He has celebrity status . He will pick a staff that know their stuff. He won't gamble on newcomers. Majority might be NFL staff. His brother is currently a head coach . You don't think he has connections? Kids will eat up /buy in instantly.

He wouldn't have to try very hard at recruiting. Kids would be committing just for the sole fact that he's Jon Gruden

I think your both overestimating a teenager's opinion on him. They know him primally as a commentator. An 18 year old was what, 3 when he won his super bowl? A Superbowl ring sure helps with recruiting. But it's never easy. Especially for someone who has never done it.

As far as assistants, I have know idea what his connections are. Given that he had never really been a college coach, beyond a GA, who knows what kind of staff he brings.

He just isn't a sure fire home run. Saban had built a championship college program before Bama threw the bank at him. Gruden is risk and you don't throw the bank at a risk.

Gruden or bust! Mullen would leave us for florduh once it opens. Kelly has sanctions, Patterson has it made at the frogs. I hope Jones can turn the table, that being said if the wheels fall off give me chucky.

I’d take Gruden. I’m just not getting my hopes up.

Kelly's NCAA stuff has expired. We don't know how Gruden would perform as a college coach but he stated that he couldn't do it anyway because the strict NCAA rules would have him violating them in no time. Why not give Saban a call and offer him $3 million over his current deal? Since we're all dreaming anyway.

Ok with all these people wanting Gruden, why is it that He was let go by the Raiders. I understand he won a Super Bowl with Tampa but that wa many many years ago. My fear is he has been out of coaching for way too long to be a sure thing. I get where people are saying that the talent will want to come because of him, well to be fair Jones has been able to bring in he talent and it has not amounted to anything. By no means am I equating Jones to Gruden, I was never sold on Gruden when he was in the NFL. Thoughts?

could you imagine the melt down in bammer town if that happened? That would be the best part lol

Oakland traded him to Tampa because Tampa made an enticing offer and Al Davis didn’t really want to pay Gruden what it would have taken when it was time for a new contract.

Winning at the collegiate level and winning in the NFL are two different things. IMO, the way that "elite" coaches win at the collegiate level is through recruiting. They basically play every game with an advantage in talent, AND they have a system that develops that talent, AND they and/or their staff has the X's and O's abilities to exploit the talent advantages.

In the NFL, the talent gaps between the teams are much, much narrower. IMO, this is why coaches like Saban and Spurrier were never successful in the NFL. It's a different X and O skill set. They just sort of do what they do and it works most all of the time. The NFL guys are more about trying to isolate and exploit tendencies to create mismatches, etc. They have to reinvent themselves, to some degree, from week to week.

Which is exactly why Gruden would be elite at the college level. Recruits would be begging to play for him due to his name and NFL contacts alone. But as AV stated earlier, he's not even on Currie's radar, so it's a moot point.

You realize that if it were to happen Volnation would have a premature you know what in unison. We would be as messed up as the boys in Weird Science were when they first saw Kelly LeBrock.
