Gruden on Finebaum

Did he happen to address why he let his agent trash us if ut was in fact a dream job of his? I seem to remember the agent laughing at the suggestion that a guy like Jon gruden would ever consider coaching at a place like ut. What a douche... Both agent and client

I'm very happy with the coach we got. Hopefully this is the year we start to see the results on the field, because he's knocked it out of the park on everything else.

The agent was doing his job and deflecting. Plus, Gruden doesn't control everything his agent says.

Relax, and stop getting so butthurt over nothing. That would apply to all of the battered fans on here who are always taking offense at something in the press. Let it go. Who cares? It doesn't Have one bit of impact as to whether or not the team wins on the field.

But, it seems that is where we are as a society these days. Open your mouth and some group will be starting petitions to skewer you regardless of what you say.

He didn't want the job. His demands were so outrageous there was no way it ever got close..

There some of those in influence that wanted him but the most influential people did not. Major concerns he would have led us down the road of major, major sanctions.

What led the influentials to that conclusion, when he hadn't been in the college game in 20 years?

OK, let's get all the facts out there; 2 years fromm now Debord is gonna retire, and Janik is gonna take a head coaching job. THEN, CBJ is gonna hire Gruden as DC AND Peyton as OC. It's a fact!

Dungy backed into a Super Bowl victory more so than Gruden IMHO. And I love Dungy. But, Peyton carried him just like he carried those two stiffs Caldwell and Fox to the brink. But, that is what a great QB can do for you.

Gruden took over a beastly Tampa D that Dungy helped build. Dungy was in year 4 in Indy when he won SB. Saying he backed into it is a bit much. That Colts D improved under his leadership and hires as well. You could argue another coach would have won 1 or more in Indy and you may be right, but saying Dungy backed in to a SB win, esp more than Gruden, seems inaccurate

Really?! No one here has said it? Cmon guys.

Gruden didn't want to live through the hell butch has lived rebuilding this program. It's why we got passed by several head coaches.

I'm not sure that's the reason, but someone in this thread needed to say it. Also, it could have definitely been money/sponsorship issues.

Anywho, carry on with trashing a Super Bowl winner because he didn't sell his wife to be your coach.

I will agree with you that Dungy improved Indy's D. But, the same can be said about Gruden improving TB's O, which absolutely sucked under Dungy.

Maybe they both backed into situations that resolved their deficiencies. Gruden inherited a younger Monte Kiffin to take care of his D; whereas Dungy got Peyton Manning/Tom Moore to take care of his O.

I'll be honest, I don't know x's and o's well enough to say how Gruden would have done here. But any coach that gives this speech before a NFC championship game is my guy:

In preparation for [the 2002 NFC Championship Game] Jon Gruden gave the single best motivational speech I've ever heard. In reality, most coaches' speeches aren't like in the movies, where the coach builds up and up the momentum until the team charges hell-bent onto the field ready to rip down the entire stadium. If a coach does give that type of speech it's usually Saturday night. The Sunday speech is the matter-of-fact review of what we need to do to win the game. All business. Gruden gave this speech at the beginning of the week. He stood up in front of us and explained that there were 10 things we needed to do to beat the Eagles. Ten Things! He went down the list one by one, blah blah blah, blah blah blah, we'd heard it all. But then he got to the number one thing we needed to do, and he started talking about their kick returner Brian Mitchell. "I want Brian Mitchell's ass on a plate," he said. "And once we finish with the Philadelphia Eagles we are going to go to San Diego for the Super Bowl..." he paused, grinned and concluded, "Where the coach is gonna get two hotel rooms for all my *****es!"
The room erupted. Exploded. That was it, that was the greatest motivational speech ever. There isn't even a second place. -Warren Sapp

What's a "*****es!"

I don't even know why people wanted Gruden.

Dude's a ****ty head coach that rode Dungy's team to a championship.

Conversely his RAIDERS made the Super Bowl and it should have been two in a row. (The Tuck). :good!:

"I don't know how close," Gruden said when asked how close he was to taking the Tennessee job, or any other in college football. Tennessee is a dream job for a lot of people, me included. Timing wasn't right, but I'll say this about the Volunteers: they got the right guy. I think Butch Jones is going to put the Volunteers back on the map and it might happen this year. I really like that football team."

I know I am going to get some grief for starting this thread right before the season starts. Kind of seems like talking about the old girlfriend before going out with the current girl. But, I also get the sense that Gruden realizes what he could have had if he had come, and hopefully he'll regret that decision for a long time!

I'm sure many other coaches echo Gruden's words now that Butch Jones has done most of the heavy lifting. I can't imagine many coaches would have put in the amount of time and energy that Butch did on the recruiting trail, instilling a new culture at UT, etc. May all the coaches that turned us down live with regret once CBJ returns this program to dominance.

Kerry Collins and Mark Rypien won a SB for crying out loud

Kerry Collins didn't win a Super Bowl. As a lifelong fan of his from his time with the Panthers, Saints, Giants, Raiders before joining my favorite team, I feel pretty confident with my answer. :)

But anyways...

#11 completions all-time
#12 yards thrown all-time
#33 touchdowns thrown all-time
Was in NFL for 17 years(mostly as a starter)
Played in two NFC Championships with 2 different teams
Played in a Super Bowl

Factor in that he started out on an expansion team which is bound to suck for years out of the gate, the guy was also a huge alcoholic. Still managed to put up those numbers despite the fact booze was f'ing his world up.

You act like the guy was totally inept and sucks. He wasn't always the best but if Kerry Collins is your go to name for a QB that had no business being in a Super Bowl, I don't know what to say.

CNNfyi.com - A sobering story - January 24, 2001

Collins, the 28-year-old unlikely hero of an even more unlikely run to the Super Bowl by the Giants, confirmed that he used a racial epithet while in a drunken state in Carolina three years ago. He spoke of how alcohol nearly ruined his life. And he spoke of how he has gained humility by admitting his many weaknesses as a player and as a person.

"One of the things I had to do in my life was to get humble," he said. "I had to admit that I can't control alcohol. I got to the point where I knew that alcohol would eventually kill me or I would end up in jail."

Collins was ordered into rehab for alcohol problems after his DUI arrest while a member of the New Orleans Saints in November 1998. After that season, he said he entered alcohol rehabilitation two weeks earlier and soon realized that he had to admit that he was powerless over alcohol's influence in his life.

He discussed his most celebrated problem and admitted that his use of a derogatory racial term toward a teammate was the result of a drunken binge on the last day of Carolina Panthers training camp in 1997. As he did throughout his cleansing series of admissions, Collins was remarkably self-deprecating and full of remorse over a past he finally can confront without alcohol as a crutch.

As the Panthers prepared to break camp in his last year in Carolina, Collins said he was "very intoxicated. There was a lot of celebrating going on in the dorms. I used a term not meant to be (derogatory). I was trying to be a funny guy. In my polluted, chemically altered mind I believed it would bring a sense of camaraderie to us."

The next day, Collins learned that his attempt to be one of the boys had struck a damaging nerve. The Panthers' head coach, Dom Capers , called him on the carpet for it, and there were hard feelings throughout the team.

"I regret the incident," Collins said. "I wish it never would have happened. That incident gave me a tag that really hurt me."

His failed trial with New Orleans later that season included an arrest for drunken driving after a Saints game, coincidentally in Charlotte. And it led the way to the NFL ordering him to undergo rehabilitation.

"When I went to rehab," Collins said, "I checked Kerry Collins the football player at the door. I took a long, hard look at myself. I found alcohol fueled the fire of a lot of my problems. I used it as a rebellious tool. It was like, by drinking, I said, 'I'll show you. I'll hurt me

No, you're going to get grief because there is already a thread about this. Check the board before starting a new thread.

Gruden's got it made, he was never a serious candidate for the job. Besides, he's still a great ally and asset to the program.

This is an underrated post...Random MNF references after winning will do nothing but assist.."Insert player name here...was fantastic with that "insert comment here..You know so and so another great talent from the University of Tennessee ..He must be happy about his old college team Coach Butch Jones really has them playing on all cylinders down there in Knoxville..What a big win last weekend against insert team here"...This is the new "Soon"

What led the influentials to that conclusion, when he hadn't been in the college game in 20 years?

trust. unreasonable demands made his trustworthiness a huge question. he had his backers, no doubt. In my mind those demands indicated he knew there was no way they would fly.. that way he didn't have to say no to those friends pushing for him..

The superbowl ring Dungy has on his hand is from a post season where Peyton threw 3 touchdowns to 7 interceptions, only had 6.8 ypa and a QB rating of 70.5.

Was hardly a show of greatness from Peyton. The comeback vs the Patriots was nice, but that was about it.
