Greg McElroy just called out the Tennessee Oline on SEC network

I'm just going to assume that above really wasn't said because otherwise I will lose my mind.

If that is the truth, Fulmer should just kick Mahoney in the nuts and just start coaching the O-line. To hell what everyone else thinks.

It was in another post, but people are really saying Hurd goes down easy?? Is that really being posted on the internet? Hurd has created every yard he has gained at Tennessee on his own and from a shotgun standstill!

Good grief!!! We better not get played by Fuente at the BoB. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH! :thud:

Sorry Eddie Vol but heard it straight from Hyamms yesterday on the sports animal. I would like to hear him say it myself if someone can find it.

Did McElroy happen to mention that Butch Jones has built his brick house on a mud foundation?

This has always been our weakness. Dobbs threat to pull the ball and run on the read option is the only thing that has masked it.

When we don't utilize the threat of the run like last week, then our o-line gets exposed.
Agree 100%. I don't think our o-line has really changed that much in the past 2 years.

And McElroy was critiquing the OLine...by name.

I'm glad they were getting called out by name on television.

Maybe it will stir their pride a little and get them playing with max effort and fundamentals.

App State wasn't some oddity that physically overwhelmed us.

We played crappy un-inspired fundamentally bad football which should have got us beaten.

If the same effort and execution gets brought to the field tomorrow we will lose.

I'm not a huge fan of the play calling and Butch has to prove to me this year if he's got what it takes to be called an elite coach, but this was an obvious let down by the players especially on the o line.

I would like to know why people thought this Oline would be great.

According to most posters Dufus Dooley left the Oline in the worst condition it's ever been in.

It takes years to build a solid Oline with depth to replace a player for a breather or when a player is injured.

How suddenly after three classes was Jones Oline supposed to be stellar?

Roll the QB out of the pocket and stop trying to jam the ball down every defenses throat. VT will stack the line tomorrow!
Play to your strengths.

Please tell me you aren't trying to blame this on Dooley. He was fired during the 2012 season. The only players on the team that he signed are redshirt seniors. When Butch got here he had a solid O-line in 2013 which meant he had an extra year before any of his recruits had to even play. Wait, I guess the line is bad because they've had to play so many years and experience makes them worse. This is 100% on Butch. He focused on skill players in his first 2 recruiting cycles because that is what you need to win in the smaller divisions. It appears he learned his lesson selling out on getting Drew Richmond, Chance Hall, and Jack Jones.

Yep. If you don't have a good O line in your fourth year, when will you?

He should have called out Roberson as well.

Only the new starters were playing with any real passion.

We've seen Wiesman and Robertson play well. Thomas was an anchor last year at center.

It was simply a bad game. We will handle VTech and people will wonder even more how App State handled our lines.

he and everyone else who chooses to, has the right to not only call out our O line, but our Offensive Coordinator after last week's performance... but for those who keep saying we ran 5 plays on purpose not to show anything (to the point of almost losing the game) and we are going to open it up this week, I hope you are right, but something tells me that will not be the case... We have too much legit talent and depth on the roster on the offense to make excuses and everyone in the country can see we are not performing up to the talent level we have. The O line is definitely the weakest link on the entire team, but why is that? Butch has been here long enough and came in seeing how depleted we were at that position... He has had long enough to recruit and develop the talent we have (Mahoney) to an extent, but has come up short.. I know we got Richmond last year and a few others (JJ-- may redshirt!?), but its strange how we have had this issue since Dooley, yet other teams seem to have success reloading their O lines-- I don't think I've heard another SEC team in 2-3 years that seems to struggle as much as we do on the O line....

Good post. It seems that our O-line has been trying to get on the same page for the last 5 years. After a while, you ultimately have to point fingers at the coach. If I'm with a kid for 4 years and he still drops his head when he comes out the stance, that's on me.

Bottom line, statistically the OL in 2013 was a top 25 group. 3 years later it's hard to argue that based off the App. State game that they looked like a top 50 group. Criticism is deserved for the team/staff/whomever for being so poor looking to start the season.

We struggled mightily with pass protection against stunts. Most of the night, Thomas, Robertson, and Richmond looked confused. On multiple plays you could see the whole left side of the line blocking nobody. They were turned around watching as Dobbs/Hurd/Kamara getting tacked for loss in backfield.

Crazy conspiracy theory # 1. Dobbs did something to piss off the center of the line during the off season. They decided to whiff on a lot of blocks to get back at him. They picked a lesser opponent thinking he would get hit a lot but not hurt. We've seen this with other teams and who knows what the team chemistry is behind closed doors.

Crazy conspiracy theory #2. Butch knows this team isn't good enough to beat any of our big 4 opponents with Dobbs at the helm so he is going to play the guys that aren't good enough at first. Once we get past Bama he will be able to put in underclassmen during the bye week and win out against weaker competition. Fans and the athletic dept will say "he made changes and turned the team around" mimicking last year. His end goal is winning in 2018 when DeBord has retired and JG is a junior, Drew Richmond, Jack Jones, and Chance Hall are red shirt juniors and Cade Mays is a freshman.

AP State's d-line gapped the center/guard hole over and over. Pass protection sucked. So what is the fix? Working together, talent, scheme, toughness, desire, ..........? All of the above? Does anyone really know?

I don't like blaming the players in this case. He should have called out Butch Jones and Don Mahoney.

These players are supposed to be good and fairly experienced. If they aren't ready to play then it's the coaches fault for not practicing them right.

We had 8 months to prepare for the smaller-sized App State def line (surely, atleast 1 month). The OL could have been lined up against some of our own smaller, faster, gap-detecting def guys during Fall camp, to prepare for what should have been anticipated by Dobbs, DeBord and the OLine coach (doesn't Dobbs roomate with some linemen / don't they discuss these possibilities?).

Golly Gee.

Well I guess you figured it out. I'm sure they didn't try and simulate that in practice... scout teams can only do so much. And here's the news flash... Sometimes teams have a bad game. No excuse just reality.
When was the last time a team went unbeaten in the NFL? There's a reason we use the word "upset" in sports. It was a bad game that we found a way to win. It happens.
Now let's see how we do the rest of the season. Overreaction always happens in week one.

I have no answers but I sure hope Butch does. So far we have seen a very weak effort by the O-Line. They should be embarrassed by their collective performance. Hoping this was a fluke and not what we can expect to see from here on out. No excuses are valid at this point.

Time for everyone to give their all for TN tomorrow. Any lackluster efforts should result in bench time and let someone who wants to compete take the field.

ITs crazy the same O-Line that was blowing open running lanes and protecting dobbs as the team drove 75 yards for a go ahead TD at Bama, is the same o line that played so bad against App State.

It's almost like they all went out the night before the game and were hungover.

No problem w/ McElroy. He did what we all should hope our coaches did - call out the pitiful effort of our o-line in the 1st game. Whether disinterested, overconfident, or outworked, those 5 should be seriously challenged this week.

TN played like this team did after a crazy night out before game day.

Didn't we have 3 freshman playing on the oline vs bama? That's an interesting thought.
