Greg McElroy just called out the Tennessee Oline on SEC network

So basically, Greg McElroy is saying we are like Charmin and we need to be more like Bounty.

I was actually going to make a thread on this but I changed my mind. He didn't just call them out, he did film breakdown on how bad they played. And he was 100% right.

He breaks down Coleman Thomas getting roasted

Line of scrimmage:

End result:

He also breaks down this play where we had 7 players in protection (5 OL, TE, Hurd) and they only rushed 3, and they still walked right through to Dobbs. It was bad.

Line of scrimmage:

End result:

Those are just a couple of the plays he broke down. He also broke down one where the whole line got beat by a 220 pound defensive end, and that defensive end took Hurd down on first contact. He was basically saying Hurd went down way too easily, and if you watch the play he's 100% right.

Well done. It was really bad.

I also saw him roast Wiesman this weekend on SECNow....he showed a clip where Dylan was pulling and literally didn't lay a hand on anybody...primarily two guys who were should to shoulder pretty much right in from of him....and both of those App State DLs were in on the tackle. It was as though either Wiesman was blind or he just didn't want any contact.

Also, it's not a very popular thing to say around here, but Hurd goes down too easily a lot.

I don't know if you have the SEC network or not, but he broke it down on video. The video don't lie, he was right. I don't care who puts it out there. If Peyton Manning said the Oline payed great against appy st., he would be a liar.

I agree and he did a very good job of illustrating why we couldn't run or throw with the poor OL play.

He called out Coleman Thomas, Dylan Wiesman, and Brett Kendrick for poor effort and toughness. I know Chance Hall would be starting if he wasn't hurt. I have a question for the insiders, do we have 3 other guys on the team right now that can get it done on the Oline in the SEC?

"Called out" is a stupid phrase. It implies some sort of burn or something. McElroy didn't say anything different than what my 8-year-old was saying by 8pm last Thursday night. I guess the media can only say so much.

And who are the "insiders"? VFL34...who else?

We had 6 lineman + Hurd blocking on one play and they sliced through us like we were hot butter. They only had 3 rushing, too. It's time to start practicing live in pads more often.

We had 7 against 3 on the play your talking about which was the underthrown ball that got reviewed and said it hit the ground. That guy hit Dobbs as he threw it or it's a touchdown.

To take it farther Hyamms asked Debord about the play calling and he said I had to pass up alot of plays and just call what I thought the OL could block.

Very alarming.

Everyone has called out the OL for a week, so McElroy needs to get at the back of the line.

I have to agree with a lot of this.
Average fans were saying this during the game, after the game, the next day on threads and several after.

And that's by no means a shot at McElroy, he's just doing his job. But it's not exactly applause worthy either.
Didn't exactly take footage a week later to know why the toilet was overflowing, pretty sure everybody knows the issue. Now we just better hope we find a good plumber.

Oh lord, you guys broke my Excuse Counter last week.

You count excuses via barometric pressure?

O lines must gel, work together to be effective. With Hall injured, how long has the current group been working together?

Well over a year. McElroy called them out with video evidence. Maybe they were out drinking the night before.

Well, he called them out by name and said had poor effort and toughness. I'd say "called out" is a phrase that fits perfectly. If I were those players I would consider it a burn.

As far as insiders, I'm talking about anyone that is close enough to the team, that knows if any extra emphasis was put on the Oline this week, or if any other O lineman may get any looks at playing this week.

I would like to know why people thought this Oline would be great.

According to most posters Dufus Dooley left the Oline in the worst condition it's ever been in.

It takes years to build a solid Oline with depth to replace a player for a breather or when a player is injured.

How suddenly after three classes was Jones Oline supposed to be stellar?

Roll the QB out of the pocket and stop trying to jam the ball down every defenses throat. VT will stack the line tomorrow!
Play to your strengths.

Didn't take Saban, Harbaugh, Miles, etc 3 years. McElwain started two walkons last year and they looked better. And he has trouble coaching, he can barely speak with his Baba Booey teeth.

I'm honestly just thinking it was a bad game, and App State is just coached well enough to know how to bring pressure.

The O-line wasn't a concern last year. Unless Kerbyson was carrying the entire O-line, it shouldn't be any different this year.

i saw the video where mcelroy pointed that out and several more plays where we simply got beat. speed and quickness seemed to favor appy state ,(imo). there are no good excuses but the bottom line is we got the W. the result of that poor performance shows the impact penetration has on our ability to execute both passing and running. all weisman had to do on one rushing play was to simply cut to his left and cut the 230 lb. rusher off. instead he allowed the rusher to slide lateraly across the line and tackle hurd. our left guard and tackle had opened up a good hole in front of hurd and the end zone was right there. this is simple, basic, fundamental, blocking technique and bob keesling, tim priest, jessee palmer, and musburger all made numerous mention of this. therefore we should expect our coaching staff to get down to the nitty, gritty, pronto. i feel UT will improve in this area and we will be 3-0 when Fla. comes to town. the humility of a good azz whooping should be incentive enuf. also UT fumbled at least 4 times vs. appy st. that needs addressing.

Shouldn't happen but it does to all linemen due to bad leverage, speed etc. The biggest issue with line play against App St was them not adjusting to the quickness. Our line was getting little more than chip blocks way too often. That was very aggravating to watch.

We had 8 months to prepare for the smaller-sized App State def line (surely, atleast 1 month). The OL could have been lined up against some of our own smaller, faster, gap-detecting def guys during Fall camp, to prepare for what should have been anticipated by Dobbs, DeBord and the OLine coach (doesn't Dobbs roomate with some linemen / don't they discuss these possibilities?).

Golly Gee.

This has always been our weakness. Dobbs threat to pull the ball and run on the read option is the only thing that has masked it.

When we don't utilize the threat of the run like last week, then our o-line gets exposed.

The most humorous thing in all this is the people that want Dormady inserted. I guess they have little regard for that kids well-being if they want him to play behind this o-line without amazing scrambling abilities.

This!

I think Dormady is probably a better passer but there's a slim chance he'd even be able to show his ability, just like Worley. If they can get it to click, Dobbs' numbers will go up.

I'm just going to assume that above really wasn't said because otherwise I will lose my mind.

If that is the truth, Fulmer should just kick Mahoney in the nuts and just start coaching the O-line. To hell what everyone else thinks.

It was in another post, but people are really saying Hurd goes down easy?? Is that really being posted on the internet? Hurd has created every yard he has gained at Tennessee on his own and from a shotgun standstill!

Good grief!!! We better not get played by Fuente at the BoB. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH! :thud:

Legitimate critique, unless his tone and/or body language suggests otherwise...which is easy to do when you're separated by a camera and a thousand miles.

What do you mean by this? Are you suggesting that the only reason Greg McElroy called them out this way is because he wouldn't say it to their faces? Are you suggesting that those O lineman literally kick his ass for calling them out? Greg McElroy has a job of reporting on SEC football, and I have no problem with what he said. If those players want to rebuff what he said, they should play better. Calling them out for playing bad football is not an indictment of those kids, it's an indictment of how they played the football game.
