Greg McElroy: "Josh Dobbs has quieted alot of naysayers this week at the senior bowl"

Did the Vols underutlize Dobbs? Is that a trick question? We used him heavily in run and pass the last two years. How could have possibly utlized him more? He scored a big number of TDs this year--running and passing. It was not possible to utilize him more.

The "throw game" at Tennessee isn't exactly state of the art among college programs.

He went 2 seasons with a graduate assistant as a position coach and dealt with numerous team issues such as some mediocre offensive line play and inconsistency from the receivers.

So...yeah...underutilized is a fair term to use IMO.

Dobbs could be capable of much more in the passing game than we saw in his time here. We will get a first look at it tomorrow.

Dobbs = Russel Wilson

RW has one of the most compact, quickest releases in the NFL. He is also one of the most accurate passers in the NFL. He also only rushes for about 20 yards a game, like most dual threat QBs in the league. There really is no camparison whatsoever imo.

Much like the comparison to Cunningham, Dobbs doesn't throw, run, or read a defense like Wilson ever did. Not necessarily saying Dobbs is poor in all those categories, it's just a very poor comparison IMO.

I don't disagree that the O line did him no favors, a la Worley. I simply think that his development under this staff was not what it could have been with better QB coaching. Who knows, they now get a chance to show what they can do again with the QB battle we'll have. Perhaps Dobbs was the problem, perhaps the staff was. We will see soon.

What problem are you talking about? Our offense set records this year with Dobbs.

You're creating a problem where none existed because you're comparing real results to whatever your expectations or dreams were. You need to at least acknowledge that maybe the disconnect is due to your expectations having been off base.

I love how guys in the NFL are made into superheroes yet when they were at this same stage, they had the same questions about them that Dobbs has.

It's gonna be funny to read all the walking back that will happen about Dobbs once he becomes a star in the NFL.

Agree 100%. The offensive line was this team's achilles heal the last 3 years. The lack of improvement and development at that position was troubling.

I truly believe Dobbs and Kamara will be better in the NFL because they'll get better blocking.

Agreed. But defenses are bigger, faster, and at a different level as well. No more UK type teams every year, or OOC cupcake teams.

True. But it's not like Dobbs hasn't burned an elite defense with big time NFL athletes before. Two years ago he ran for 130+ yards against a pretty nasty Florida defense that could produce 6 first round picks (Hargreaves, Neal, Tabor, Wilson, Davis, and Brantley). Hargreaves and Neal were first rounders in 2016 while Tabor, Wilson, Davis, and Brantley have been projected as first rounders according to many mock drafts. He made those guys look as silly as he made Kentucky look with his speed and athleticism. This year he threw for 320 yards and ran for another 80.

I think you don't realize the type of elite athlete Dobbs is. Just watch what he does at the combine then come back to me with this argument.

If he underwhelms at the combine (and I hope he doesn't), will you shut up? Asking for a friend.

Why should they walk back? You never do.

This is the same guy that buried Cam Newton in 2011 while praising Blaine Gabbert. I wouldn't call him a savant when it comes to QBs. He missed on them alot. He probably said the same thing about Dak Prescott last year that he's saying about Josh this year.

And don't forget Mayock drooling all over Jay Cutler in 2006. He's hit or miss just like all of the 'experts' are.

Impossible.

What is underwhelms to you? Maybe if you think running slower than 4.4 is underwhelming. Then sure that is possible.

I believe he tests as the best athlete at the QB position. And I have a hard time believing anyone comes close to him.

So what if he does? You cant be a good QB in the NFL based solely on atheticism. You have to be able to make extremely difficult throws. Dobbs doesnt do that. Everyone knows it. He'll be lucky if hes the next Tebow.

Has thing to do with Dobbs being a star or not. You continually compare Dobbs with Cunningham/Wilson, Sutton with Revis, Kamara with Faulk.. when non of them play anything like your comparisons when it comes to mechanics and techniques.

Of course not. But it helps. Guys like Russell Wilson and Tyrod Taylor are able to use their athleticism to extend plays when protection breaks down.

Don't get it twisted. Great athleticism is an asset for a QB.

with a real coach, josh will be a great NFL player. that is what he was born to do.

sad, our lackluster coaching at those positions over last 4 yrs.

Umm yeah he can make those throws. We will see what "everyone" knows in April though.
