Greg McElroy: "Josh Dobbs has quieted alot of naysayers this week at the senior bowl"

I don't care what side of the fence you are on. Pro Butch or Anti Butch. One truth that can't be debated is Josh Dobbs was not developed properly, or at all, while at Tennessee. In fact, his development was neglected. That's coaching malpractice. Dobbs was basically on his own. It's a travesty not seeing what could have been with him.

Glad he will get a shot and believe he has the tools for great pro career.

It makes me wonder if we underutilized his skills at Tennessee. I know he put up great numbers, but I think he was capable of so much more. I would like to know where the inconsistency with the game plans and the passing issues came from.

I don't know if we could have utilized him any more than we did. He ran, he threw, he caught. Only thing he didn't do was tackle or return kicks.

Good grief people! do you not remember Dobbs as a freshman set against the Dobbs of this year? He has been developed quite well actually.

Dobbs himself stated that the school workload interfered with his play on the field. In particular against alasalami.

We all know that if you put Josh in the right situation when the Lights are on he will shine. He has always been a gamer

He will be on my Madden fantasy team next year, regardless of his ranking! He'll be a 99 before year 3. So will Kamara. I can't wait to see what they rate Kamara's speed, acceleration and agility.

Good post. Your Niners are needing a QB, BAD! There could be a good chance he goes to the sunshine state. I've said all along he will go in the third or fourth round and the way things are looking at the Senior Bowl, he may possibly go early third now.

Makes you wonder how many records he would hold if he has a legitimate QB coach while at UT

I'm actually a UNCC grad. Not much of a SAN Fran guy. Definitely not a Kaperneck (so) fan. I agree that Dobbs could go in the 3rd or 4th. He's one of my all time favorite Vols.

McElroy also went on to say he thought Dobbs performance at the senior bowl improved his stock from a 6th-7th round pick all the way to the 4th round. Also if you believe the buzz, the Cleveland coaching staff in particular Hue Jackson is in love with Josh Dobbs. In fact some think they might be targeting Josh with their 3rd round pick.

I haven't seen NFL Network's coverage of today's practice yet but from watching ESPN, everyone was gushing about Dobbs today. From Todd McShay calling him the biggest surprise of the week to Louis Riddick basically alluding to Tom Brady and Belichek when talking about the rapport developing between Dobbs and Hue Jackson to even Bill Polian, they were all raving about Josh.

Josh was the face of the south practice today with all the cameras on him at the end as well as getting the main post practice interview. Josh definitely stole the show today at the South practice if you watched ESPN's coverage. Louis Riddick went as far as to say he was the player he was most looking forward to watching play Saturday. Big week for Josh. He definitely upped his draft stock. Big time.

The Cleveland Browns and Jimmy Haslem, where any career is destroyed quickly.

an insane class load + football + sleep > 24hrs a day.

I have always believed that Josh's performances on the field were victims of his priorities. I remember him being interviewed when he arrived for the SC game and he was carrying a backpack full of books to prepare for an upcoming test. It would take a mental machine to not let one obligation cloud the other - especially at that level.

You notice how whenever we went down by double digits and had to scrap the original game plan and let Dobbs just be Dobbs that he became unstoppable.

I think the coaching staff severely underutilized and misused Josh's skills. The fact he didn't have a QB coach the last 2 years was embrassing. And the fact they brought Mike Debord out of retirement to be the offensive coordinator the last two years rather than hiring a young hotshot like Matt Canada who transformed Peterman into an NFL prospect was also a travesty.

All in all Butch Jones messed up big time in the development of Josh Dobbs.

Based on other's reactions, you're quite the polarizing poster here, and even to me I feel like you deal with absolutes too much. That being said, when you're right, you're right and this post is dead on, in my opinion.

I fully believe he was underutilized while at UT.

Going 2 seasons with a grad assistant as a position coach and bailing out play after play for the offense with his running ability and taking a beating doing it had to curtail his development as a passer IMO.

As QB starved as the NFL is, I can see a team like Cleveland taking a flier on him in the 3rd round.

The Browns don't have much credibility when it comes to QB selections (or anything else). I mean, they chose Manziel high in the draft when he was risky for multiple reasons--not very tall, can't run around in the NFL like you can in college, and a drinking problem. Two years later and he's not even in the league.

Messed up big time in his development? Is that why he might get drafted now?

Clearly, we're supposed to believe that Dobbs has improved only in the last 3 weeks and nobody associated with Tennessee football deserves any credit.

Goes right along with the rest of the shtick.

Exactly. None of this makes sense. Dobbs impresses in senior bowl practice and improves his draft stock so our staff failed at developing him........what?

I don't think it's that his development was "messed up" per se. I think "hindered" might be a better word.

I give them credit for how much he came along this year, but still it appears with better coaching he could've shined much earlier and become even better.

let Dobbs just be Dobbs that he became unstoppable.

On the ground mostly.

I don't want to be a negavol or a Dobbs hater because I think he can be a good NFL quarterback in some years BUT he will be an interception machine in the very beginning (if he gets the playing time).

Not only is his accuracy inconsistent, I question his decision making. If you've watched him, you'll know that he loves to try and fit it in double/triple coverage. He has the problem of going to his primary route and not his secondary, third, etc.

it won't go well in the beginning. You realize that this is the best of the best. This isn't college corners and safeties, these are the best in the world. If Dobbs struggles in the NCAA, it probably won't stop in the NFL.

HOWEVER, all of his weaknesses can be turned around after sitting back and learning, adjusting to the speed of the game and have Years of quality QB coaches. Dobbs does not lack in work ethic, leadership, talent, arm strength, and health and those are the things that stop good college QBs from translating to the pros.

As much as I hate your analysis on most players, I do think Josh has the ability to be a good NFL QB. But I think you need to take off the orange shades, take a swig of everclear, and come back to reality.

They were coaching him literally 3-4 weeks ago. It's a ludicrous argument.
