NO--she is NOT one of the greatest athletes of all time....nor is she in the top 10 of the greatest tennis players of all time...not even close....

WHY? Her athletic ability has NEVER been measured in competition against the BEST tennis players in the world.

Look here, sir--I'm done trying to talk to you about this subject--and will call it a night!

GO VOLS!
Lol, amusing watching folks get all flustered.

I think the "for a woman" sounds sexist and chauvinistic.
Not saying you are or you think that, but it is hard not to interpret it any other way.

It absolutely was an asterisk...I said serena was one of the best althletes of all time and the first reply was "for a women."
Its not pc rhetoric bud, im.as conservative as they come. Its about.recognizing an accomplishment. It's much the same when people say a basketball players isnt great cause they couldn't play football.

Do you think that in whatever sport you want to talk about that the best women athlete could beat the best man athlete ?

Sure men have a competative edge, but the comparison should he made in the competition that they face. To say no women belong on the list for the sole fact that their women is simply stupid.

I would have picked Doug Atkins.

I agree Doug is likely the best football player in the state history. But to best Wilma not even close.
A side not: Humboldt was a world away and I was fairly young, I think I remember Doug being a really good basketball player.
Also that brings to mind Ed "to tall" Jones from Jackson. He was a really good basketball player and high school football player that went to Tenn. State on b-ball scolley. Coach John Merritt talked him and the b-ball coach into letting him become the great football player he became.

I'm not your bud, son.

And No! It's NOT the same as saying a basketball player isn't great because he couldn't play football....that's an absurd and illogical comparison.
I've NEVER heard anyone say that Dr. J, Jordan, Byrd, Magic, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Lebron, or Carl Malone were less of an athlete, or had less athletic ability or athleticism than football players like Manning, Brady, Jim Brown, Walter Payton, JJ Watt, etc...etc...

Is there any question that Michael Jordan's athleticism or athletic ability is greater than Peyton Manning's? Both are recognized as great athletes for their accomplishments when competing against other men in their own respective sport.

That's one level of comparison of athleticism....

However--NO ONE in their right mind would ever dare say that Taurasi, Moore, Parker, or Griner were anywhere near as good as Jordan, Byrd, Magic, or Lebron in the sport of Basketball--that would be an unfair comparison because it would DIMINISH the accomplishments of those great female athletes.

And no one would ever compare the greatest women's BB teams against the greatest NBA teams of all time--it would also be unfair.

And if you really do BELIEVE what you are saying is correct--then go lead the charge to abolish antiquated and paternal divisions in all sports--from elementary school all the way to professional leagues. And just see how many females make it to college on athletic scholarships or into professional leagues.
Even this a long way from the topic about Tenn. athletes. Way back in the early sixties, I go to see Wilt play B-ball in LA. In the program they profiled his athletic ability. At the college level:
100 yard dash was near best by his school's track team.
could bench press more than his weight (apx 300 lbs.)
could broad jump well over 20 ft. (remember 24+ ft. being claim in article)
throw javelin near school best.
high jump his height ( over 7'2")
put the shot better than most on team
broad jumped over 24'
The Lakers were showing what a phenomenal athlete he really was.

Says the dude she would trash in any athletic competition.

You funny.

Wow that was a good one. I love the side of your argument you backed up with objectivity and facts. Really makes one question their stance.

Ron WIdby deserves a shout out here. From wiki:

Sportswriter Ron Higgins would say in 2011, "Few athletes in SEC history enjoyed a better senior year in 1966-67 than Ron in both football and basketball." In football, he led the nation in punting average at 43.8 yards, while in basketball, he averaged 22.1 points and 8.7 rebounds while leading the Volunteers to a conference title. He was named a second-team All-American in basketball, and was also the SEC's basketball Player of the Year. He also thought about continuing with golf, but decided against it because it interfered with NFL contract negotiations.

Beattie Feathers would be TN's #1 if he was from the other Bristol. He's the Jim Thorpe of UT athletics.

When Charlie Garner was here, I sat in the stands next to this very elderly gentleman on a day when Charlie just would not be tackled. He was turning a 5 yard loss into 10 yard gains all day.

I look over after one masterpiece of a run and this old guy, who literally had tears of joy in his eyes, says, "I haven't seen anything like this since Beattie Feathers."

I nodded knowingly, then after the game made a stop at the library to figure out just who Beattie Feathers was. One of the greatest to ever lace them up.

If a single father was listed as “Tennessee’s all time best mother” there would be protests galore and you’d all change your tune.
