Gillespie is out

If you’re worried about losing “one of the best recruiters and coaches on the former staff” then you have big problems!! Nothing against RG, however a fresh start for everybody is usually the best thing! Running back coaches are a dime a dozen!

Uh, your not talking about RG then because his 500K salary doesn't equate with the "a dime a dozen gang"

Any chance a position for Probst just opened up and it would be “legal” since it happened after signing day?

If it's for an on field coaching position I don't think there is any rules that apply to that. The 2 year rule is for one of the support staff positions.

butchna have you heard anything for certain behind the reasoning for RG's departure

Just the same scattered innuendo as everyone else. VQ is still hinting (but not confirming) that he was fired and there’s speculation that it was an issue of “culture change”. I think he was kept for the two signing days as an extended trial period.

The drama queens melting down over a RB coach ... wow you people need to get a life or go be Alabama fans. Or uga that’s the flavor of the week

The best results we ever got were when we had a QB coaching RBs.

And don't forget UT's WR play when Pat Washington was coaching that group.

QB's should, in theory, be great position coaches because they see the big picture instead of just that one position.

Serious question - how many times does UT need to change the culture to be successful? I personally think coaches use that as an reason for losing way too much.

Need a coach that will take a look at the players we have and figure out how to maximize the use of that talent on game day. I thought he was that type of coach - but now hearing the culture argument again - which was a Jones thing as well.

So, 300 posts and we still don't know if he quit or was fired.

OK. I went through the trouble of clearly up the Gillespie's Gone syndrome for you. Note the attached illustration which should help clarify the uh, condition.

This is what happens when you fail to feature the NFL 2017 Rookie of the Year NFL when you have him on your team for 2 seasons.

For those of you slurping and whining over an assistant football coach that you did not know personally or professionally, get over it, please.

The head coach makes the call on who starts and we can't forget the love fest for Hurd.

Since assistant coaches are extensions of the HC and affect his win/loss record, they should serve at his behest. Butch’s early narrative was hiring and loyalty to his buddies. Smart completed a similar move with Tracy Rocker. I don’t see how not going forward with a RB’s coach swerves from evaluating and developing talent. If he did it in the middle of Spring practices maybe. In any case, I doubt Pruitt uses the switch to excuse any of his losses...since he’s hiring the replacement. :hi:

Butch's best staff was the one he brought with him in year one.

CRG was the best recruiter on the staff last season. That was the reason he was retained through NSD (make sure we didn't lose commitments). He never came back once they staff was allowed some down time. He'll be fine where ever he lands, and our staff will be able to find another recruiting stud who will get us in on the top backs like Sanders, Cain, Crouch, James and Brown, while uncovering new talent that wants to wear run the T also.

Quite frankly if I were the new HFC at UT it would be one of my top priorities to make the cleanest break possible from the previous (failed) HC's regime which means retaining ANY of the coaching staff would have to involve something "special". This certainly looks like what's going on from my vantage point.

Next season when we end up 5-7 with this god-like staff I'll make note of your post. Lol

Missing your beloved Lyle I see. And winning 7 games will be a monumental accomplishment next year given the complete mess your boy Sgt Carter left this program in.

And who said anything about this staff being “God-like” other than you? Most of us just have enough sense to know virtually nothing will be impacted by losing a good running backs coach who was an average recruiter. We need better quite honestly.

Was never a Bajakian fan. As far as playcalling, I felt DeBord was superior. But DeBord couldn’t teach QBs. Mahoney was one I gave a chance but he utterly failed. Everyone got hung up on Butch not retaining Pittman, but I have no doubt he wouldn’t have stuck five years...he didn’t at Arkansas. Elder was solid.

Not as bad as the other one up in here. That shtick is past old.

Like a Rodney Garner type? I tend to agree. Gillespie has always been viewed as an easy fit. He’s affable and knowledgeable, so I wasn’t surprised he was retained. Someone mentioned the slightly odd Anthony Grant recruitment. My theory is that Gillespie went to bat for his kid and he flipped anyway. That led to bad dynamics afterwards.

I think culture defined as work ethic, off field issues, locker room drama, losing, etc are good things to want to change...or maybe I'm wrong, but I'm not.

Why all the love for Gillespie? With the RB talent UT has had, and the lack of real production at that position? Come on. Yes...the rb position was the lone "bright" spot in the past few yrs, but it wasn't very bright!

There are tons of really good running backs out there. How important is a RB coach anyway. Is he going to coach a guy to run over someone, out run a linebacker to the edge, juke a db, or see a hole? NO. A good OL coach can make me or you look like a great RB coach.

I think he only had one yr left on his contract. He didn't get a bump in salary and maybe he wanted to move on as well.
He was a good recruiter, but I trust CJP will find someone just as good, if not better.
He'll find a new job quickly.
