Gillespie is out

Maybe Weinke will teach the RB's to play QB. We have a small team, so Pruitt should also pursue Rick Moranis, who did a great job coaching an undersized giants team in '94.

Those are just two options though...

Neither does 99.9% of the civilized world.....save a handful of PMS-ing VNers in this thread who are dying to find issues that don’t exist.

Next season when we end up 5-7 with this god-like staff I'll make note of your post. Lol

I'm only posting this to clear some things up for some posters here. I played college football and then later coached at multiple levels. First off being good at a position as a player doesn't necessarily translate to being good at coaching that position. Secondly, a great coach is a great coach. Meaning you can get high productivity out of your players regardless of the position you are focused on. Trooper Taylor while here at UT is a good example. He came in as a RB coach and production skyrocketed. He then moved to WR coach and garnered the same results. As a coach you need to be a great motivator as well a teacher. Thirdly RB is the easiest position on the field to coach from a technique and responsibility standpoint. It is not much of a developmental position. Lastly, for reasons stayed previously, it is vital for your RB coach to be a beast on the recruiting trail. If Weinke gives us a major boost in recruiting the he would be a homerun hire. He has been a QB and a head coach giving him a tremendous understanding of at least every offensive position. I liked CRG but this is not a major loss by any means.

It is, but not because of our rb coach

Agree it was going to be a long year anyway. I don't think this helps though. Could see more attrition among existing players which may ultimately make it take longer for the Vols to get back to winning.

I for one have given up on getting out of this cycle. I figure in 3 to 4 years, we'll have another HC when this one is fired. There are some that are truly expecting him to do what Smart did at Georgia - which implies a melt down within the next 2 years.

If this is really your attitude , you are are part of the problem. Have no idea why you are on this board or a Vol fan ... we don’t want or need ya , move to Alabama

May have been said but Here is my 2cent guess:
I would place a bet that if Pruitt liked what he seen RG would have eventually got a new contract. Chances are RG wanted a contract and Pruitt told him that would be addressed in the future but not now. RG wanted job security and he started making phone calls. He found another team and he went back to Pruitt and wanted an extension and Pruitt said no and he said goodbye or as the head lines said mutually agreed.

That’s my thoughts anyway.

5-7? You are thinking he is going to at least match what CBJ did the first year.

If he does - then did we really upgrade?

If he doesn't - did we downgrade?

Completely differenet situations. Us Vol fans were led to believe that Dooley left this program in shambles and it couldnt get any worse. We were dead wrong. Just look at what CJP has aaid about our team. We are small and I would be willing to bet he has said we are weak.

The last time UT saw a good OL was when Dooley was here. Butch failed to coach up the talent he brought in. Thats almost as bad as not recruiting them. When Butch came in, he didnt have to follow 0-8 in the SEC. If CJP goes 5-7 or 6-6, all of us should be fine with that.

Losing one coach won’t make a difference with attrition. Yeah, this year will be brutal, but that doesn’t effect Pruitt’s long term odds.

RG was probably only kept through signing day because of his role as recruiting coordinator

If it does hapoen, how do you feel about a QB taking over as RB coach? That seems strange to me. Like Butch in reverse.

Sometimes you have to remove the orange glasses and gleam at reality.

Reality is not a soul knows how next year is going to turn out. Some are glass half full people i.e."orange glasses", some are glass half empty i. e. "you know". Somebody is going to be right, that's "reality" GBO

Not strange at all. RBs is the easier position to coach. A lot of new coaches will use the rb coach position to hire a head coach from a top local school to gain a recruiting edge. RBs are the easier position to coach.

How about Des Kitchens of North Carolina State as a possible replacement for Gillespie?

His name’s been brought up. Was a candidate for the WR’s position. He’s an associate HC at NC State and their best recruiter. My pick if I were making the decision.

No. You go get someone with experience

Im not saying it’s the best hire, but you can take a chance on something like a position coach. Everybody gets “experience” by getting the position and what better type of person than one who played it and knows it.
