Gene Chizik

Oh, you're right. We actually should have looked at Murray State's head coach, since our resources are so much better that he would obviously be successful.

Funny thing is, he was a very mediocre head coach but a damn good mind...seeing as he got fired at Murray and is now on staff with the Jaguars

Were you a fan before or after Pete Carroll got there??

This is going to sound jerky but were you a Cavs fan before or after Lebron?

I like where you went with that post but in reality, most people in Ohio didn't even like the Cavs before Lebron.

OK crystal ballers, Chizik and Dooley may or may not do well but the Chizik story is amazing. I say the video of his arrival. Last year and their recruiting is certainly shutting up his detracters. Auburn AD is either a genius or very lucky.

Chizik got lucky last year. Look for auburn to struggle in 2010--they'll win 6-7 games and go to a minor bowl.

I thought we were talking about the cultural environment? Ruston may be bad, but Greenville, NC isn't too great...has a high crime rate from what I read, however ECU doesn't seem to have too big of a problem winning. They even beat WVU and Va Tech

You've obviously never been to Greenville, NC. The crime rate is a bit skewed because it is a rather wild college town. Its not like the its the East Coast HQ for major gangs. If I was a D1 athlete who couldn't get into a BCS school, ECU would be a serious consideration. Rabid fanbase, great weather, beautiful NC girls, party campus and only a hour from the beach.

I've never been to Reston but there are far worse places to live than Greenville, NC.

We certainly never talked about it. I consider myself a Cavs fan, although I'm liking Memphis a lot now that they have a team. However, I wouldn't have considered myself a Cavs fan before LeBron. It's not that I like them before they're good, it's just that people actually watch games together now and pay attention much more, there's just more excitement to having such a big name player.

He' neither.

Key word is this sentence is that GAME. After the Auburn game is when he took fire.

Yeah...so if he was playing terribly at that point in the season, why does it matter that he was a draft pick later...it's not like Kiffin had the draftable Crompton when we played Auburn

I'd rather have Dooley than Chizik. I don't think Dooley will succeed. I'm extremely confident that Chizik won't. Why do you fire Tuberville and hire someone that made Iowa State worse? Auburn averaged 11 wins in the 4 years before 2008, and had a bad year due to a bad OC. With Malzahn as OC, Tubs would have won 10 games this year.

I disagree. Tubs hired that OC and then fired him after a 4-1 start, AU then went 1-7 the final 8 games. What Tubs did was coaching malpractice. Tubs also stopped recruiting and Chiz's staff is making headway in recruiting.

You're 'extremely confident' Chiz wont succeed? Wow. I don't like to play the shoulda, woulda, coulda game, but a lot of people don't realize how close Chiz was to winning 11 games last year.

The shoulda beat Bama, UGA and Kentucky.

Auburn's head coach Gene Chizik coached at a smaller school before taking the Auburn job. I remember hearing that his record was awful at his previous school. Can anyone give me some more information about his past? Obviously I am not asking this for no reason at all. We got a head coach from a smaller school whose record isn't outstanding. Maybe I am trying to get a comparison between Gene Chizik's and Derek Dooley's resume. Thanks. GBO.

gene brought in gus and that is the reason for the good job he is doing. dooley didn't bring in anybody like that.

WOW what do you know, his record wasnt any better then Dooleys before he went to coach at auburn.

Iowa State: 5–19 (2–14 conference play)

dang and look how hes doing at auburn

Yeah he's great. They lost 5 of 7 to finish the 2009 season. Beat exactly 0 top 25 teams and also has a juco QB for 2010, They did have an exhilirating win against powerhouse Northwestern in the Outback bowl (UT should have been there) where they only gave up 35 points and a barn burner over Furman in that stretch... Just Sayin...

We were close to beating Bama. Almost does not count for anything except a loss

The only reason Chizik was hired at AU was due to his previous ties as DC. No one in there right mind would hire a coach that was 5-19 at ISU and had the 111th ranked defense in college football.

If you "should have" beat some good teams but didn't, does that make you a better or worse coach?

C'mon guys, some people are on this thread downplaying what Chizik did his first year.

Au had NO DEPTH last year, only played 13 defensive players against Bama, only had like 70 scholly players, but could've easily had 11 wins last year.

Not comparing Chiz with anything UT related. Things will only get better down there with the recruiting they're doing.

That's all I'm saying.

Chizik's going to have to figure a way to beat bama--that's all that auburn fans care about. If he can't he will not last long down there.

Looks like the recruiting gimmick is over for the Tigers:

"The en-masse spring recruiting trips by Auburn and other schools have come to an end. Groups of Auburn assistants have done the so-called "Tiger Prowl" to state and area high schools in limousines the past two springs.

The NCAA passed a rule Thursday allowing a university to send only two coaches to a high school on the same day during an evaluation period. NCAA spokeswoman Stacey Osburn said Friday it is effective immediately!"

Terry Bowden and Tubbs both had winning records against Bama but were fired

As for Bowden, I'd say that had more to do with Bama being down although his undefeated season was rather amazing.

Tubs did a good job of getting under Bama's skin but a good bit of that was due to the Shula factor.

Tubs also had a winning record vs. Nick Saban. Now the shoe is on the other foot, A big part of Saban's winning has to do with Bama's two biggest rivals(TN/Auburn) hiring losing coaches.
