Garner & Simon Possible Staff Additions

Doesn't make a bit of sense.... unless the new coach has already been chosen.... which would likely mean the new AD has been chosen... which suggests all of this was previously planned... which suggests a level of competence we've never seen from UT concerning this kind of change.
Broken watches...

I believe Steele will be the coach next year on a trial run. It just needs to be decided now and go public so the bleeding will stop!

We can see how great that idea is working as top players are diving into the portal.
Steele is unlikely to be HC. Serious attempts will be made to land a well known HC. The players hitting the portal were going to be ineligible next year to play because of the investigation and pending sanctions. All this info is on VN from reliable sources.

Steele is just completing the defensive staff so Malzhan can walk in with it complete!

The chancellor has said AD hire first so this must be speculation.

This is what I don’t understand. Why hire any assistants at all if a new AD and HC are going to come in and hit reset. And if you are going to hire a couple, why not just fill out the entire staff? What good is having a couple of coaches going to do when it’s obvious that your coaching staff is in a holding pattern of being half full? I’m clearly very ignorant about this entire mess.

Yes and no, he was a graduate assistant here in 2008 I believe, but other than that he's been a scout and player development guy.
He also graduated from De La Salle high school, which produces some excellent talent. If he could develop a strong link with that school and others in the region, that would be extremely beneficial. I got the chance to see Simon play in person at De La Salle when I lived in the Bay Area. That team was awesome and it was during the team’s 151-game winning streak.

Going to be interesting on Garner because he was one of Auburn's higher-paid assts.

That's why UT has to come to terms with him. I'm sure he wants something over a few yrs. But, I guess UT needs to let him know the plan going forward timelines etc.

I have been confused as well. I don’t think we are looking for assistants. Those we hired were brought on before Pruitt was fired. That said, maybe Fulmer knew Pruitt was gone and convinced Pruitt to go after Steele to help Steele out and maybe he expected to keep his job?

Since none of us know how this is gonna play out, with spring practice approaching soon, not having a new AD, who will then have to do interviews to hire a new head football coach, I kinda think it makes some sense to hire some assistants for the time being, and so far, since they all have been coaches from Auburn, who will pay most of their salaries, why not? Get some coaches in place to work through the mess that is Tennessee football at the present time. Even it it is only for a year, they will be getting a bigger check this way than if they weren't coaching at all. Just make sure that if a new AD is hired and the new head coach doesn't want them on his staff, they will be paid on a pro-rated basis.

I think you can get both Garner and Simon if you are honest with them and lay it out as it is...a short term situation to prove yourself with the potential of a huge, long term place to make your name.

At the end of the day, if a coach is competitive he loves a challenge and UT should be advertising that challenge as such.

They already have their coach on board, Kevin Steele. They slapped the interim tag on him to cover any blowback of the Pruitt firing, because Pruitts lawyers are going to argue that this was premeditated to get out of a buyout(which imo, it was) Call it competence if you want...
GBO!!

Steele is the coach. It’s becoming pretty clear at this point.
I don’t understand why people can’t see this? As soon as he was hired, I knew Pruitt was done and had my suspicions that Steele would be given the reigns. Now it’s apparent to me that he will. If you think about it and look at it rationally, it’s all been pretty obvious from the get go.
GBO!!

I could agree with this if Fulmer stayed on but since he was let go I don’t think this is the planned route at this point.

Yes. That would be a level of competence I have personally not seen since the decision to fire Fulmer the first time was made. It is hardly as if Pruitt has been cheated. I believe he made about $750K per win.

If you work with HR law you know there are ways you must "say" something... to achieve the same end as saying something "wrong".

IMHO, Steele is getting an on the job interview. If he does well and in particular holds the roster together then it could become permanent. If not... then they can still do a search over the next several months and name a permanent coach any time after September. Again, this is a level of competent strategy that I'm not used to seeing from UT. I wonder what changed?

Just because Kevin Steele is the head coach doesn't mean we already have an AD. You can infact hire one with out the other
I haven't seen any indication that Steele is anything more than "interim". I suspect he can earn the job by performing well over the next 10 months. But again, this is a level of competent strategy we haven't seen in the last 20 years.... which includes Fulmer's decline which started the day Cutcliffe left for Ole Miss.

Well, I don’t work with law but I do work with beer, if that means anything.😁
I hope you’re right, but the BVS in me sees this playing out in the worst possible way.
Hell, I’m to the point where I would just assume Lane Kiffin or Jerod Mayo, get the job.
🤦‍♂️
GBO!!

Not According to our new AD, who is getting with the search firm immediately to hire a new coach. That tells me the exact opposite.
