Garner & Simon Possible Staff Additions

What is the point of this post? Oh, to announce the wet blanket has arrived.
The point of this is the same as 95% of what has been posted since Pruitt was fired. It’s all bull crap and trying to be funny because that is all any fan has left.
And basketball....

At the rate we are losing talent. We probably want need a coach. I swear we are the best Circus in the USA! Anyone want season tickets ?

Doesn't make a bit of sense.... unless the new coach has already been chosen.... which would likely mean the new AD has been chosen... which suggests all of this was previously planned... which suggests a level of competence we've never seen from UT concerning this kind of change.
Just because Kevin Steele is the head coach doesn't mean we already have an AD. You can infact hire one with out the other

We need someone that can recruit like Garner can. We also need true VFLs on this staff. I like both of these moves.

Steele is the coach. It’s becoming pretty clear at this point.

Of course he is. It's obvious with these hires. No way a top coach comes in and is expected to inherit some staff other than his choices. Steele will be a placeholder for at least one season. It could be worse, we could have kept Beldar. Steele > Beldar

That’s the logical answer. Steele is going to be the coach next year, even if he has the “interim “ tag. If he does well he will be favored to keep the job, as will the coaches he hires. The idea that they would hire these people, knowing they would be let go when a new “permanent “ coach is hired would be totally incompetent.
But I suppose you could make a case that it would be right in sync with previous decisions.
I think Pruitt has known for a while. Neids started staying quiet what, 2 months ago? You gotta assume the brass at UTK knew Steele was coming in as Interim. Pruitt merely agreed to the deal.

Yall we are not hiring in Jan without an AD. Nor in Feb...or Mar... Steele is the guy. I expect a contract will come as soon as we find our next AD.

How great for the new HC to have all these decisions already made for him when he comes aboard
I understand your point but some staff decisions need to be made soon or this team will come apart. I think they need to forget about the search firm and get a competent team together and do their own search under the Chancelor and Boyd's supervision.

I really like both hires. I'll assume Simon will be coaching OLBs. Garner for D Line will be great as well, good recruiter, turned out some great linemen over the years.

Just give me Tom Herman with Herb Hand as OL coach and we're back before we know it, relatively speaking. Defense of Steele, Garner, Simon, Ansley is pretty solid. Offense of Hand, Chaney, Osovet (he's seemingly staying), Martin, and Graham is pretty good as well. We might be able to get Texas's former strength coach as well (Yancy McKnight). Could also get Jay Boulware to be TE coach and move Osovet to QBs since Herman can help there anyway. No buyouts, all are currently available, let's get it done. Herman brings his offense (ranked 7th last year), Steele brings his defense (ranked 7th, 12th, 14th, 17th, and 38th while Steele was there). Far better than our 108th on offense and 69th on defense, that's for sure.

I loved Kevin Simon as a player but has he ever been an on-field coach anywhere?

I would go over to Appalachian State and beg Dale Jones to get involved with this project.

The man can develop talent and has tremendous leadership qualities.

His guys would run through a brick wall for him, same sort of thing he brought to the field as a player.

This is the type of coach we need now, someone who can get the most out of what you got.

Garner will be DL if terms can be agreed upon and Simon will move into one of the LB coaching positions vacated by Neids and Felton.
Don't know about any of the other spots.
I think we're down to 3-4 options on how to handle this deal. As you can see, we're going to lose players by either keeping Steele or starting fresh. I would love to make a Freeze or Lane happen, but it's pretty clear and obvious that won't be happening.

1. Keep Steele and load up on Vol guys (Kevin Simon, Dale Jones, etc.) There are actually a few other Vols we should consider bringing home. It may be time to bring in a Jim Bob or Bo Hardegree for QB coach also. Anthony Parker is a guy at GTech that could possibly be an OL hire, etc.

2. Jamey Chadwell - This one is probably the high risk/high reward hire. He's hot right now and wants the job. Is he a flash in the pan or the real deal?

3. NFL hire - Caldwell or Gase. This would probably be the Peyton hire. I'd probably go Caldwell, but Gase would have some advantages like youth, bringing Jim Bob and Hardegree, etc.
