Game thread: LADY VOLS VS. ETSU

Yeah, we've needed a stopper for years...a defensive specialist who takes immense pride in shutting down these small guards and wings who go off on us to have career games and seemingly score at will.

Unless we're facing an unstoppable, dominant center or a future WNBA star like Delle Donne, nobody should be able to singlehandedly beat a Lady Vol team. It's been a trend lately that I trust Coach Kellie will address sooner rather than later.

Neutralize Haynes-Overton (or at least slow her down) and we win handily.

Looks like we should expect baby steps over giant strides, but we'll get there with recruiting help.
We haven’t signed anyone, so I’m not thrilled about what’s coming down the pipeline

;)
This sounds good (plus layup practice), but after playing (and running) last night, with another game tomorrow night, I’m thinking all that extra running might fit in better when they have more time between games. 🙂

To quote an iconic woman:

"Suck it up, Buttercup."

;)

ya know a loss would have been a terrible start to harpers coaching era at ut, so im glad she was able to squeak by a win.

i would like to see massengill, kk, and mccoy replaced with horston, key and brown in the starting lineup against central arky and see if that works out a bit better.

the sec media predicted 6th place, but if last night was any indication, itll be a much worse finish. im not sure an alabama win is guaranteed bc they return the players that torched tennessee last season

I was researching her a little bit and she originally committed to Memphis. Maybe grades were an issue. Can't imagine she was recruited over and dropped.
Yeah, happens quite a bit. A school will extend an offer contingent on improved academic performance. If that doesn’t happen they’ll rescind their offer and the athlete usually ends up at a lower tier D1 school or a better DII school. It’s not a personal knock to her, just how it works. To play at a P5 university in women’s sports you have to be a well rounded individual, not just a well rounded athlete.

It’s hard for me to believe academics was the issue! But maybe! JMO Holly recruited only from players with high star ratings from these joke scouting services which seem to be wrong quite a bit as we can see from our roster.

Athletes still have to meet the admission requirements for the university. They can bend it a little, but if your test scores or grades don’t meet minimum entrance standards for the school they can’t extend a scholarship. I don’t know for certain that was her case, but that’s often the case for players that seem too good for the school they’re attending.

The honest truth Tennessee does not do much looking in Tennessee for recruits unless they are on some top 100 recruiting list. That was what was happening when Holly was here and a lot of schools only use lists of top players to make offers. No way any recruiting service can see every player in the nation so a lot of players slip through and end up at smaller schools. Overton could've been a top 20 player on anybodies list if they had seen her play or knew who she was. I understand that a staff does not have time to go out and see players that they don't get information on from a recruiting service. You offer all the best players on someones list and sometimes those players turn out to not be up to their ranking.

and they totally overlooked this haynes overton who was just rated a 3 star
People get overlooked at times and other times maybe they develop by their junior year in college, they get better then they were in high school. 🤔! She evidently has to be great for her team. Evidence shows she scored most of their points because she had something to prove, but sadly it wasn’t enough. She scored 41 points and had 1 assist as a point guard. She is in her third year and been doing this longer then most of the Ladyvols put together on our team. All of this seems to be a bit of common thinking, but sometimes it is not.

I`m with you on the lineup but Brown still have knee issues and will not be 100% at no time this season.

Should have recruited Haynes-Overton instead of Anastasia Hayes. We would be set at pg with a good shooter, great defender, plus an alpha personality.
One assist? A PG is a floor general, she was interested in just scoring and if you watched the game said on camera,” this is my house” but you clearly need teammates to win championships. Your points irrelevant when you still lose the game.

I thought she said "this is our house". She nearly dropped a triple double on us.

The Lady Volunteers were lucky to win after that ETSU player played like Lebron James and dropped 41 on the LV last night.

Just watched the game. My take-aways...
--Officiating was both terrible and one-sided.
--Lou Brown has the highest basketball IQ of any player in this program since Parker. I hope she's planning a career in coaching.
--Glad to see Zaay found her shot, but she seriously needs to work on shot selection, and continued obliviousness of game situation will really limit any effectiveness at PG.
--PG...Yikes. I was hoping Jazz's shooting would be improved, but no. At least she took care of the ball, compared to Horston's 7 TO's, many of which were unforced. I'm afraid this position is going to be our biggest problem this year. Does Rennie have any PG experience?
--Key played much better than I had dared to hope. Impressive for her first college game. Would like to see more out of McCoy. KK doesn't seem to have improved at all.
--Good to get the W but KJH has a lot of work ahead of her.

If Lou's mobility gets better, I am on-board also. But right now, she is still not nearly 100%
Take it easy on Horston. Nerves. Besides,,: she had 4 pts, 4 rebs, 6 assists and 1 block to go with those 7 to's

Also i think Kellie needs to try and work Harris in because i`m not sure KK is the answer.
I agree with you, KK just does not have the foot speed or agility that it takes for the D1 post position. I think she can be trained to be an asset at the post position, however, maybe as a sub only. She also appears to be a little out of shape. I though Key, though a freshman, looked much better. I am sure KJH knows more about the situation than me and a lot of other posters. I watched a lot of her Missouri State games, and KJH’s teams always seemed to start slow but came on during the season. I believe things will improve.

I wish I knew what was missing in the S&D coaches here.
After witnessing the difference between Mercedes here and Mercedes in the W,,,Huge difference.
She almost runs with grace.
Here, she lumbered

Makes me wonder if KK has ever been taught how to move.
Quickness comes from knowing how to float your body and move your feet below your knees
and
when you are not quick,,You beat quickness with tactic and anticipation

No she said this is my house. Our whole team had 4 fouls and they still lost. I guess i look at the big picture.

"They" are one of the weakest teams on our schedule and they nearly Georgia Stated us.

Not sure what point we're trying to make now.

Horston's got game...PERIOD!!! - i'll take the TOs in her first college game. love her motor, basketball IQ, and her hair .
KK, has not improved. she has no post moves, except trying to body through defenders
Massengill is two steps slow on defense. Same as last year, and too lackadaisical running the point (sort of reminds me of Kamiko Williams, who i thought was better than she ever showed)
I expect Zaay to come into her own, but playing out of position right now. don't like her at the point
Key has too much height to not post up stronger. i like her play, but I would've love to see a post move from her on several of those offensive rebounds vs passing
Rennia will likely have a good year, but don't expect a breakout year. I'd love to see her post up, because she'll have a much shorter defender often. I was hoping the coaching staff would change her shot from the 3, so she's not pulling from her waist.
Brown is ok. she got some nice buckets in the first half, but i don't expect consistent production from her
Rae could be better. had a nice game against CN, but seems like it's more of keeping her head in games more than anything else

when i see the average height for this team, sort of reminds me of the 08/09 season when Glory Johnson, Shekinna Stricklen, Amber Gray, Alyssia Brewer, and Alicia Manning all signed with the LVs. shorter guards were able to go around them with ease.

As you know coach, you have to look at an athlete and determine if there are flaws, especially the glaring ones. A lot of coaches lack that ability. That is not always looked at, especially many of the 5 stars. There are a few high school stars that are highly ready for the next level, especially for the Power 5 conferences. It is almost as if KJH is starting from scratch.
