Game Thread Lady Vols Softball in the Eagle Round Robin

Jeff: If you ask a couple of people, I'm sure you could find out what happened to Geathers. Inquiring minds want to know....

OK, nice win this evening to make the team 4 and 0 on the season. The bats were really alive today, and even though Georgia Southern had several throwing errors in this game, Tennessee still would have won nine or ten to nothing even if you remove those throwing errors. But as it was Georgia Southern was no match either in the pitching Circle or at the plate for Tennessee.

Moss pitched well enough, but she wasn't dominant. Some of that was because of ponytail behind the plate. Her Strike Zone just moves around from Pitch to pitch to pitch. You never know what she's going to call the strike and what she's going to call the ball. Both teams had trouble with it. But Moss didn't seem to be able to change speeds very effectively today. Her off speed stuff wasn't working, and even though she found the plate well enough to get batters out she can do better. Towards the end of the game she appeared to be overthrowing. I can't imagine she was tired, but she was overthrowing quite badly. All and all Mosses velocity is tops, but she needs to work on Pitch location and Pitch variation.

Gregg is a Bonafide All-American, Geer can be too if she elevates her play just a bit. Chelsea Seggern at 3rd will be an All-American too before her career is over. She's the real deal. You don't have to worry about third for the next four seasons folks.

Leech and Vines have matured and are solid players now also. But the team still needs to find production in the bottom of the order. McClain has to be able to figure out how to hit the ball. The team needs a DP, Bearden was the DP for the first three games, today it was Lockman, then after the wholesale substitutions I lost track.

All in all it was a nice win in front of a big Georgia Southern Home crowd who came hoping to see their team take down the big girls from Tennessee. It didn't turn out that way for them, but it was nice to see a big crowd anyway. Everybody had a lot of fun, except maybe the Georgia Southern team.

One other thing, Tennessee was very aggressive running the base paths today. I like to see that. I was a little concerned in the first three games that Ralph didn't seem to be using his speed very much. McClain, Vines, Leach, Geer, Gregg, Mcswain, all of these girls have good speed. Today they were pushing to get the extra base, they're pushing to get the steal, on a throwing error by Georgia Southern they're really motoring to get not the next base but the base after that. If they do that they're going to put a lot of pressure on opposing teams. Just my opinion.

I am not sure is better defensively. Always heard and did with my teams was to make sure we were strongest up the middle. With Scarlett and CJ I think that is not the case!
JMHO

Well I have no real argument. I will point out that McClain has much greater speed than Geer. She also has a better arm, although maybe not by much. What she doesn't have is Geer's savvy or experience.

As far as left field is concerned it looks like Holcombe is going to play Left Field. I don't think you'll see McSwain or anybody else in left field except in blowout wins or to give a breather to Holcombe. The Outfield needs some work simply because they haven't played together much. With that in mind it might be better to have Geer in center so she can handle the communications. But McClain is a junior, she's been playing in the Outfield since her freshman season. I think they'll do okay.

One last player comment. Jenna Holcombe is a player also. Unless I miss my guess she's going to play in a lot of games for Tennessee the next four seasons. She has great speed, has great great bat control at the plate, and the only thing she seems to lack right now is game experience. I guarantee you Ralph is going to give her plenty of that.

Karen wasn't kidding when seggren signed she was the starting 3rd baseman...her bat seems to be coming around too...not sure what to make of CJ hopefully she can get it going

Thanks Jeff. To me I just want up the middle the strongest part of the lineup defensively. Geer has played 2nd as a freshman I think and she is used to the center field position. Most say the CJ has the best arm on the team and RF is the place for the best arm (ie) Rainey Gaffin. I will roll with the coaches. Still think Lockman will end up catching more than Scarlett and that should help up the middle as well.
I like Geer but I love Megan Gregg and unless something changes she will be an AA the next two years and maybe Geer this year.
Thanks for your thread on the games and understand you are going out west as well. Do you live out that way, just curious?:boobies:

The radio announcer commented that there was a lot of Orange in the stands.About how many Lady Vol fans would you estimate were in attendance.
