Game Thread Lady Vols Softball in the Eagle Round Robin

Last year,Geathers. This year, McCLain. That is not a good trade-off. Wonder about this. Geathers a much better hitter, imo.

Glad they are letting her workout some nerves now...I'm excited because it looks like we may have some midweek game arms again instead of throwing the weekend starters and them wearing down as the season goes on

Tennessee wins the game but it was a mixed bag effort today. The good news is Arnold pitch well when she had to, she showed some Grit, and on a hot day with a home plate ump who was wildly inconsistent in her calls, Arnold stuck with it and got the batters out when she needed to.

Geer and Gregg appear to be in midseason form, they're hitting right now is carrying the team. Leech and Vines are going to be okay at the top of the order they're getting on base as the table setters there supposed to be. Leech has also cleaned up her fielding at second, although she hasn't had a whole lot of chances in the first three games

Vine's is doing well at first base, she had the one dropped ball yesterday, but made no miscues today.

Mcswain had a bad day at catching today. She had two passed balls and missed catching a pop fly that was just a few feet over her head. Lockman comes on in relief at catcher and she does the same thing as short pop fly that's very catchable she misses. On the the positive lockman maybe getting her swing back she put her bat on the ball today couple of times, with the long home run.

The Outfield needs to work on their communication, they had the one miscue with geer and leech, that resulted in a dropped ball, and then the other incident with McClain and Holcombe, although McClain snagged the ball for an out. The first play was leeches to make, geer never should have called her off. The second play was McClain's to make all the way, and she did, Holcombe just needs to learn that it's the center fielders call not hers.

Chelsea let one ball get by her, otherwise the team looks to have a third baseman for the next four years.

One other thing, The Dugout is lifeless, the girls need to start chanting and cheering and yelling and hollering like the other teams do it. I don't know what's up with that, but I want to see some action and hear some noise.

Are the umps any good?

Oh good lord no. The home plate ump with the ponytail is all over the place. She was all over the place yesterday and had the crowd screaming at her. She was the same today she is maddeningly slow on her calls you literally don't know whether she's called the strike or a ball she does the same thing every other ump does she makes some kind of unintelligible noise that you can't tell if she's called ball or strike, on the ball she never raises her left arm on a strike she will raise her right arm about five seconds after the pitch. But her strike zone is a big moving Target. That was a large part of the pitchers problems today for both teams.

I was also mystified as was the rest of the crowd by her reversal of a pop fly back to Arnold that was a clear out. There are Runners on first and second for UNCG, the pitch came in the batter swings it's a short pop fly back to Arnold, she calls the runner out runner goes back to the Dugout then suddenly she's waving her arms like a helicopter. She didn't call a balk or illegal pitch because the runners didn't Advance she just wave to the batter and had her come back out and swing again. The whole crowd is asking each other what did you call what did she call. I have no idea.

A couple of other things. The bottom of the order needs to start producing. McClain is better as a hitter than she was as a freshman. But she's not getting on and turning the bottom of the order over. The designated hitter is Bearden, she hasn't produced anything either.

Geer also had two base running errors today. She's a senior and should know better. She tried to take second after singling in two runs, after the throw went to home plate. But she waited much too late. The ball was literally almost in the catcher's glove before she decided to take off for second. I know she was waiting to see if the throw is going to be cut off, but you have to make that decision much quicker than she did. On the second base running error she was caught stealing, which can happen of course, but she got such a late start and then went into her dive way too early. Just a couple things to work on.

Tennessee Tech is playing Middle Tennessee State right now. The next game won't be for a couple of hours, Tennessee versus Georgia Southern, I believe.

MccLain is at least as good a Fielder is geathers was, maybe a little better. She is nowhere near the hitter geathers was.

I think it is significant that Arnold the freshman is getting the start over Alex brake the junior, junior college transfer.

Sorry I didn't do a very good job of posting the score, and I apologize for that. In my defense it is a very bright and sunshiny day. I had a lot of trouble seeing the screen on my phone. So I wasn't going back and looking at previous posts. I'll do better in the next game.

Early results seems to say we are going to have an effective pitching staff. Looks like we have four players that will pitch. Seggern the third baseman could pitch if needed she had an 0.96 era in high school.
Hitting has been good hope the freshmen can start hitting so far only Holcomb has been effective.
I guess Moss will get the start in game two today. Brake looked a little shaky in her first trip to the mound. Probably a case on nerves first shot at pitching in big league college softball.

Which is why mysteriously losing he geathers and playing McCLain instead is a net negative for the team. McCLain has not been a good hitter.

Arnold was recruited by Florida state and Washington and I think LSU...you knew what you were getting...Brake is just a hard worker who went juco and proved herself think of it as the weekly covering themselves in case Arnold didn't have it...but Arnold has shown she does and we get to add gabby sprang and Ashley Morgan to this team next year wow!!

No problem. I found the live stats to follow. Wish I could be there.

Gotcha'.

McClain's career has been strange up to this point. She was a highly rated player that hit well over .400 in high school. .465 one season. One thing for sure she has one of the best arms ever and expect she will throw out at least a few who try to score from second on a single to center. I hope she can hit this year .300 would keep her in the lineup. If she can't hit I expect Ralph could move McSwain to RF and Geer to center.
