Now that I've had a chance to breath and digest the game, here is my analysis 10 hrs later.
1. For 3 quarters anything and everything that could go wrong, DID.
a. 1st punt return by nations best punt returner, fumbled, setting them up.
b. A TD that was not a TD. How can 2 hands, pulled to the body, both feet inside the end zone, falling to the ground not be a TD? I thought once the plain of the goal line is broken with control anywhere, it's a TD? Never will understand that logic.
c. JRM getting ejected for hitting a punt returner who did not signal fair catch. This hurt the D-fence for 2 quarters. Cortez McDowell is solid depth though.
d. Dobbs picked off before halftime. To be so smart that was the dumbest throw he could've made.
2. App St. had a great game plan. Kill clock every play and shorten the game. Even using the "my leg is cramped up" every chance they could.
3. We over looked them. You cannot tell me UT was not already in Bristol with 150000 fans and game day!
4. We did not run our normal offense and I'm not sure why. I don't think vanilla is the right word for it, but it was strange. 2 runs and pass, 2 runs and pass basically every series.
5. Richmond has to improve. Wiesman needs to be a back up.
6. EB needs to be on offense and kick returns. Dude is electric!
7. Field goal kicking looked much improved. Daniels is a beast and weapon.
8. Team didn't panic, only the fans did.
9. Defense got better as the game went along. That was encouraging. Especially with JRM out. From the middle of the 3rd quarter on, I'm not sure they gained more than 25 yds total.
10. 9 days to prep and get ready for UT's biggest game in a few years. Meaning national attention, where are we really, 150000 there etc....They say teams make there most improvement from game 1 to game 2. Let's hope so. Kick VT ass and no one will remember last nights struggles.
Thoughts Vol Nation?
