no BCS bowl appearances since 1999, a combined 6-10 record against SEC East rivals Florida and Georgia in the last eight years, an 8-14 mark against ranked opponents in the last five seasons.

With the above being true and the recent success of Pearl, is football now less important?

So maybe a shooting is a bit much, that being said its not that much of a stretch. This is still football country and hopefully always will be. CBP has done a great job in making our basketball team not only competitive but good. But it will take a decade of football ineptitude and a basketball title hanging in TBA to ever consider that men's basketball is moving ahead of football

Why do people feel the need to compare the 2? Can't you just enjoy them for what they each bring to the univ? Maybe that's too much to ask of some...

i agree....lets not start another fulmer/pearl discussion...i really think we have three of the best coaches in the nation in pearl, fulmer and summit (judging by fulmer's PREVIOUS success...)

Dude... you are SO killing my Sweet 16 high by posting that ...

I don't think it indicates that football is less important at all. I just think it points our how much of change is needed within our football program. Take that however you would like, but I think we all know what I mean.:whistling:

Whew, thank goodness rexy managed to squeeze that in this week. I'm sure I speak for the majority here when I say I'd almost forgot his stance on UT football.

Looking at the amount of money being thrown at Fulmer, I would say no.

Nope, football spring training beats a basketball Final Four appearance EVERYTIME. Basketball blows!
I agree. My interest in basketball is minimal. I have not watched the Vols' first two games and I doubt I'll stay up to watch tonight. I would gladly trade 50 NCAA tourney C-ships for 1 SEC football C-ship. I'm glad for my fellow UT fans that they happy and excited, but it means nothing to me. Personally, I'll be happy when this is over so attention will be redirected where it belongs.

Thinks were getting far too optimistic around here with all the Sweet 16 talk...it's just not the same if Rex isn't around to start threads like this one, over and over and over and over and over again.

Wow, I just pose an unbiased question concerning the perceived heirarchy of Tennessee programs and you guys come unhinged. The reality is that the football program is less important since we have a winner at TBA if for no other reason that spring practice no longer dominates the March sports page. However, that being said, Tennessee is a football school and will always be one....knowing that keeps my hope for a new revelant coach alive.

Why does there have to be a hierarchy? Why does it have to be treated like a zero-sum game, where if men's basketball is improving then it has to be at the expense of football?

Football always has been and always will be #1, not just in Tennessee, but in most of the south. That doesn't mean that basketball can't thrive in that situation -- as someone else pointed out, Florida's basketball program seems to be doing pretty well playing second fiddle to its football team.

...and Ohio St....and USC...and Texas A&M...et cetera.

Success in basketball doesn't make football any less important...we should just be proud that we're one of the few universities that can be considered top 20 in every major sport.

Yeah, that's exactly why you posted it...

Next week's edition should be something along the lines of, "Man, guys... I was talking to an Arkansas fan the other day in Church, and I don't know if you guys remember it or not, but the Hogs stomped us last Fall. What could I say to the guy? When did Arkansas become a better program than Tennessee?"
