The 49ers thumbnail on Cignetti...

Just a glance to look at
In both his professional and collegiate stops, Cignetti has been no stranger to coaching successful football programs or quarterbacks. He’s been a part of a division championship with the New Orleans Saints, participated in five college bowl games and won four, and helped Indiana University of Pennsylvania reach the Division II national championship game twice and semifinals four times.

Cignetti has also been a member of the coaching staff in the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine all-star games.

He joins the 49ers from the University of North Carolina where he was the Tar Heels offensive coordinator in 2006.

Prior to his season at UNC, Cignetti served four years as Fresno State’s offensive coordinator where he helped the Bulldogs’ offense average 52.8 points over the final six games in 2004 and become just the sixth team in NCAA history to score 50 or more points in four consecutive contests. In both 2004 and 2005, Fresno State’s offense finished among the nation’s top ten in scoring and third down conversions.

Prior to his time at Fresno State, Cignetti was the New Orleans Saints quarterbacks coach from 2000-2001. During his two-year stay, the Saints offense ranked 10th in the NFL, consecutively. In 2000, he helped the Saints earn the NFC West title.

I don't know anything about this guy, but sounds like it might be a good thing.

I have done some background info on the guy....seems to be pretty legit as a coach. I just want this to be the right hire, regardless of who it is.

With the Saints in 2000 and 2001 as QB coach. Do you realize that he actually turned Aaron Brooks into a capable NFL QB for those two years? That's pretty amazing. I guess he was the only guy who knew how to keep him from throwing off his back leg...

just someone fairly close to the program. not exactly official but he knew about Cignetti and told me a few days ago, which was before it was even announced. He's told me about most of the guys that have been spoken to before it was announced so I'm starting to lean towards believing what he's hearing.

Sources are like buttholes, everyone's got one or knows one these days.

With him possibly being OC and QB coach, and Kippy wanting to be closer to his family in Knoxville, what about Kippy being WR coach. Even though he got promoted I still think he would want to be closer to his family.

I think Fulmer wanted to make Kippy Asst. Head Coach and Wr/RB coach and Detroit matched it.

I'm sure there are worse hires than this... I don't really know enough to make a judgement one way or the other. Sounds pretty good, though. How old is he?
