In both his professional and collegiate stops, Cignetti has been no stranger to coaching successful football programs or quarterbacks. Hes been a part of a division championship with the New Orleans Saints, participated in five college bowl games and won four, and helped Indiana University of Pennsylvania reach the Division II national championship game twice and semifinals four times.
Cignetti has also been a member of the coaching staff in the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine all-star games.
He joins the 49ers from the University of North Carolina where he was the Tar Heels offensive coordinator in 2006.
Prior to his season at UNC, Cignetti served four years as Fresno States offensive coordinator where he helped the Bulldogs offense average 52.8 points over the final six games in 2004 and become just the sixth team in NCAA history to score 50 or more points in four consecutive contests. In both 2004 and 2005, Fresno States offense finished among the nations top ten in scoring and third down conversions.
Prior to his time at Fresno State, Cignetti was the New Orleans Saints quarterbacks coach from 2000-2001. During his two-year stay, the Saints offense ranked 10th in the NFL, consecutively. In 2000, he helped the Saints earn the NFC West title.
