I was actually going to read this thread and move on, but there are a couple of things I'd like to address.
I know how many Vol fans feel about Arian's abilities, his starting position and worth to the team, so I won't say anything on that topic. What could be left to say on this is beyond me since it's been debated ad nauseum. Bottom line: You feel how you feel. Nothing anyone can do about that. Me or Arian.
I will say that the penalty shouldn't have happened. It should've been either a no call or off setting. If you look at those pictures of it, the one thing that is really striking to me is this. In all but the last picture, look at how the the Florida players are standing around Arian, looking straight at him. All of them are just inches from him. They have him circled and they are standing very close. If a ref can throw the flag on excessive celebration as taunting the other players, tell me how this is not taunting. Just the fact that they've got him cornered with no other Vols around as he's trying to get up should be enough. But as they stand there trying to taunt him, what you don't see is how they held him down on the ground as he tried to get up. And the ref is right there watching it all but he waited for Arian to get them off him before he throws a flag. I don't care who you are or how you feel about Arian, you cannot possibly think that that call was not wrong. Should Arian not do anything? Cower and walk back to the huddle defeated and beaten? Sorry, ain't gonna happen. Plus, you also don't know what was said to these guys before this game. And I will leave it at that.
As for your opinion that Arian was in Fulmers face, let me tell you, he wasn't. He was pissed. Fulmer asked him what happened and he was explaining what happened. He was animated yes, but NOT in Fulmer's face. HAD HE BEEN, I WOULD'VE BEEN THE FIRST TO SUGGEST BENCHING HIM. If you see the replay on that, you will see Arian making motions with his hands showing how they were holding him down and how he threw his arm up to get that one guy off of him as the other four were standing there just daring him to do something. Fulmer was not pissed at Arian for his explanation but he was mad that there was a penalty, which is why he took him out. But he put him back in because if you hear the story, if someone sees the replay, you know what you've said to your players to get them pumped for this game....then you know it isn't all on Arian. Period.
You can think all you want that Arian is a ME first guy rather than a team player, but you'd be wrong. I don't expect you to believe that coming from me and frankly, I don't care. But the logic used to come to that deduction is wrong. First of all, that "Self Made" tatoo doesn't have one thing to do with playing football. I don't expect you to know that but geez, just making general assumptions based on what you think you know or what you think you see, is ignorant at best unless you're sure of all the facts. You cannot be, in this instance, because you don't have all the info. My hope is you'll be open to some of the correct info, but I won't bet the farm on it.
As for the sweeps, I agree with you. Against Florida, Arian should not be running sweeps. But those were the plays called, so what would you have him do? Getting the ball to your playmakers is a good philosophy, but if you don't play to your players' strengths, then it kinda kills the philosophy, wouldn't you agree? NOBODY ever said Arian was a barn burner. But there are some things he does very very well. So why not utilize him in the areas that he's good at?
I realize with the level of frustration that fans are feeling about this team's performance that many people just need somewhere to point the aggression at. Fair enough. I talked to Arian about that at length this last weekend. He understands that people need a focal point for their frustration. He understands the fact that he, Coach Fulmer and Jon Crompton will be catching the brunt of that. He said God blessed him with broad shoulders and he will handle it. I also realize that many fans really feel that Arian is not the proper choice to start. I don't make those decisions so I have no answer for that other than I think Arian's earned it. He has made some mistakes, but he still gets up and keeps on giving it his all every day. We all do that don't we? What else can we do? What else can Arian do? Coach Fulmer? Jon?
