They were ready to run him out of town after year 2 if he didn't have a huge turnaround from year 1. That was not an impressive debut season by any means and included a loss to Louisiana-Monroe, who Shula had blown out the season before. Remember he showed up in Tuscaloosa with something of a bad reputation from how he left the Dolphins, and he had no previous ties to the school so he didn't exactly have a ton of leash. Luckily for him they were a top 10 team ahead of schedule, then won the title the next year, so the fans shut up.How quick would they run Saban if he didn't win? He's a prick, always has been.
I have pity for whoever takes that job after him. That coach will almost surely be fired after 2 or 3 years. With a boatload of cash, sure, but whoever they hire isn't coaching for the money anyway. They are probably more entitled and complacent than any fanbase has been in the history of CFB.
