Folks missing the context of beat UF and UGA

So when people say "just beat Florida, then I'll be happy", they don't mean it?

They mean beat Florida..... and it's assumed that if you can beat Florida you will be beating all the other teams that are worse than Florida.

If you asked someone at the beginning of the season would you trade a win against Florida for a loss to USCJr they would have looked at you like you had two heads. And rightfully so. What a ridiculous notion.

The OP stated " There's no point in beating top teams if your lose to USCjr."

So there is no point in winning any game unless you go undefeated? Absurd.

Yes. If you are good enough to actually beat Alabama then you are without excuse if you lose to any other team.

I keep seeing people essentially trying to shame posters on here with phrases like "I bet at the beginning all you wanted was a win over Florida".

What folks don't look at is the reason we want that win over Florida means we are back, we're top of the east and likely headed to the SECCG. That didn't happen. People are angry and rightfully so. The idea of beating the top teams is to then become the top team. At this point the UF win looks more like a lucky pickup than a declaration of current and future dominance.

tldr: There's no point in beating top teams if your lose to USCjr.

I agree with you. It really sucks to lose to uscjr but I am so thankful we made it over the hump. Maybe it shows that the SECE can never fully be doubted because its full of quality players.

if we win out and win a quality bowl game the season will be a success! I don't care what anyone else says. :boobies:

If we lost to Kentucky or Vandy, it would be more palatable as those are obviously better teams (yeah USCe beat Vandy in opener).

But USCe, with or without new QB, is a sucky team Tennessee shouldn't have lost to with our 3rd string players...Ok maybe we did play them with some 3rd string players but still...no excuses. And with muschump at the helm, it is just like losing to florida.

No, that's not what I meant. I have already explained myself, I sure don't need YOU speaking for me.

I just rewatched the Florida game. It felt like watching your wedding video after your wife runs off with your best man. It hurts man. It hurts.

Losing to a crap team like South Carolina negates one, or maybe both of those wins. Sorry. Got to win the games you're supposed to win.

The East is Hot Garbage and the best Jones can do with 4 games left is 3rd behind Kentucky

Let that marinate

Yes you are what your record says you are....and in the case of the Vols, well, they may not be quite as good as their record says they are, because 2 of their wins were very very lucky.....it is what it is

I meant it. That Saturday was glorious to behold and it sustains me thusly.

Yeah beating Florida and Georgia is still something that nobody can take away from us this season. The fashion in which we won those two games makes it even sweeter.

As an outsider, I just believe that people have looked at the entirety of the season and that's why they are unhappy.

The South Carolina game was no fluke. Why? Because Tennessee has consistently lived on the edge all season long.

Fans, IMO, have actually become smarter and more sophisticated. A win is not a win is not a win.

Bottom line is that we are all chasing the same thing. Right now, Alabama is the standard. Are you closer? Will you be closer next year? Will you get to that level? How long will it take?

Being that this is year 4 and with the recruiting rankings and year by year improvement that occurred up until this season, people thought they'd be knocking on the door.

But, they've gone overtime with Appy state, had to go 4 quarters with Ohio, and lost to SC. They aren't as close as the biggest negavol thought

How bout this then. Ky loses their last 2 conference games and we win out. Then ky is behind us in the east.
Let that swirl around in your mind for awhile.

Actually the best Jones can do is win the east. The likelihood of that is low extremely low. But the best is not 3rd place

Yeah, but it sounded good in his head, hopefully he has a friend that tells him how stupid he sounds so he doesnt go around making a fool of himself

Breaking the Florida streak and the win against UGA are two memories I will cherish as a Vol fan until I die.

So was being in Knoxville in 2009 when they drubbed SC on Halloween.

These kind of memories have been far too fleeting for this program the past decade and I won't discount them.

All that being said, a few wins here and there and struggling for bowl eligibility aren't how elite programs are built. And if UT and it's fans can't strive to be elite, then what's the point?
