Our problem with UF is simple, they have more talent than we do. They had 2 1st rd draft picks last year. They'll have 1 or 2 1st rd picks this year. Heck we'll be lucky if we have any seniors drafted from this class. Next year if Cam and JRM return we'll have a team with at least 6 guys that can go in the 2017 draft. Talent like that wins games. For comparison 2014 Bama had 7 players drafted.
Old talent is so important in college football. It masks bad coaching and makes good coaching look great. Heck, look at Saban's record at MSU when he didn't have great players. Let's see what Butch can do in 2016 with some great players
+1 Science over mysticism for me every time!
For all the talk of why Florida has beaten us more often than not since the 90s, maybe the simplest answer is the best answer...they've just had better teams and coaches.
It starts at the top: UT has had ridiculous leadership since Joe Johnson and Florida has had relative stability. Cheek and Co. are Busch League.
Coaching: UT had a HoF/SEC/NC winning coach in Fulmer...Florida just had a better one in East Tennessee's own HoF/SEC/NC winning Steve Spurrier.
AD: Hamilton v Foley...no words.
Hell we've been so messed up for so long that even when a bona fide loser like Muschamp landed in Gainesville, we couldn't capitalize because the roster had eroded damn near to a FCS level.
Now I'm as pissed as the next guy about coaching errors leaving wins on the field this year. But A) While games were winnable, Butch's margin for error was virtually zero due to youth, and that's the truth. B) Nobody's perfect (Saban Kick Six was a huge unforced error by the Great One himself, for just one example) and C) I wouldn't change spots with any program in the SEC East right now. Roster talent, culture, morale, academics (smarts are often under-appreciated as a factor of winning football), and trajectory are all light years ahead of where they were three years ago.
Light years. And like it or not, Butch and Hart, being that they're in charge and all, are primarily responsible.
SO call it sunshine or whatever you want, but I'm looking forward to what comes and will enjoy the ride, bumps and all. It's been a long vol walk through the wilderness and for my two cents, I think I see us coming back, and right soon.
