Long-time lurker, first-time poster. Hi everybody.
I am a lifelong Vols football fan. I will love them no matter the record, but instead of offering forth my opinions on this year's incarnation, I've decided to let the numbers speak for themselves.
There is a great website put out by Kenneth Massey (of the Massey Ratings). He has a page which serves as an aggregator of the various computer polls that exist. Believe it or not, there are over 100 sites that rank college football teams on a weekly basis. Some are very professional (e.g. Sagarin), most are academic, some are just by stats/football geeks.
College Football Ranking Comparison
As of this post, compiling 91 polls, The University of Tennessee Volunteers are ranked 73rd.
73rd out of 120 Division 1-A (sorry, I hate the acronym FBS) teams.
73.
Furthermore, our highest ranking in any poll is 29 (Annar) and our lowest is 108 (GridMap). Oddly, we have the highest Standard Deviation of any of the 120 teams, meaning we have the highest variance of values.
In other words, even to computers, we are the most confusing team in the nation.
We are behind Duke, 4 Michigans (UM, Michigan State, Western Michigan, Central Michigan), Troy, Stanford - even behind Buffalo and Rice...and they are foods.
Again, no opinions, just the numbers. The miserably depressing, sorry, sorry numbers.
