Long-time lurker, first-time poster. Hi everybody.

I am a lifelong Vols football fan. I will love them no matter the record, but instead of offering forth my opinions on this year's incarnation, I've decided to let the numbers speak for themselves.

There is a great website put out by Kenneth Massey (of the Massey Ratings). He has a page which serves as an aggregator of the various computer polls that exist. Believe it or not, there are over 100 sites that rank college football teams on a weekly basis. Some are very professional (e.g. Sagarin), most are academic, some are just by stats/football geeks.

College Football Ranking Comparison

As of this post, compiling 91 polls, The University of Tennessee Volunteers are ranked 73rd.

73rd out of 120 Division 1-A (sorry, I hate the acronym FBS) teams.

73.

Furthermore, our highest ranking in any poll is 29 (Annar) and our lowest is 108 (GridMap). Oddly, we have the highest Standard Deviation of any of the 120 teams, meaning we have the highest variance of values.

In other words, even to computers, we are the most confusing team in the nation.

We are behind Duke, 4 Michigans (UM, Michigan State, Western Michigan, Central Michigan), Troy, Stanford - even behind Buffalo and Rice...and they are foods.

Again, no opinions, just the numbers. The miserably depressing, sorry, sorry numbers.

Any computer that spits out a list saying Tennessee is one of the 30 best teams in the country should be immediately smashed with a sledgehammer.

i would prefer to see the computer get beat down Office Space style, personally.

Damn It Feels Good To Be a Gangsta playing in the background isn't a requirement, but would be a plus.

Well, if the numbers say we are the most confusing team in the nation, then I say the numbers don't lie. Do they ever?

Talent-wise, I think 29 is about right. If you add the weights of poor coaching, that pulls UT down to the 50's.

Another perspective: If the current trends hold, UT is likely to be favored in only two of the remaining games: MSU and Wyoming. I wonder if UT has ever been considered an underdog to both Kentucky and Vanderbilt in the same season since, oh, I don't know, World War I?

BTW, welcome aboard. At this point, UT would be a better team if Raynoch was out there playing on Quaaludes.

There is a reason why the poll that ranked us 29th seems a bit dubious.

From the Annar website: "The Annar Rankings are calculated by comparing yardage statistics of each team's games with the average yardage statistics from their opponents. The Annar Rankings do not care who won the game, what the score was, turnovers, injuries, game location, or special teams play. It's not a perfect system but can give some insights on the overall strength of teams assuming the turnovers average out and key players stay healthy."

 I really love it when he loses control and starts punching it with his bare fist.

Welcome to the OP.

I would say the last time this happened is when VU was undefeated (5-0) and ranked in the top 20. UT's loss is Vandy's gain.
Just one question... With Tubervilles firing of his OC, will Fulmer have the nads to do the same to Clawson?
