Firing Philip Fulmer was the worst mistake a major program has ever made

The problem wasn't firing Fulmer. The problem was hiring Kiffin to replace him. Instead of the decision being based on the qualifications of the HC it was based primarily on him bringing an all-star recruiting staff and his dad on staff. Even if he hadn't bolted after one year they'd probably had us on probation if he stayed.

But the way things were declining under Fulmer, if we kept him we could've enjoy a lot of 5 to 7 win seasons, just like we did without him.

It wasn't all just that we hired Kiffin. It was the way Fulmer was fired. He could have been eased out like Bowden at FSU. That worked much better for them.

And I don't agree with your 5 to 7 wins statement. I think even in 2009 Fulmer could have had 8 or 9 wins, and by 2010 Tajh Boyd would have been ready to step in and who knows what would have happened?

Just because you won a few grand at roulette one night doesn't mean it is a good investment vehicle for retirement.

You don't judge a decision solely based on the outcome. People do the same thing with the kick 6 f auburn. Even though bama lost it WAS the right call..the odds of the made fg far exceeded the chance of a return f td. You have to look at the environment AT THE TIME THE DECISION WAS MADE.

Fulmer succeeding as he did at ut for so long was hardly a given. They fired a guy whose last 4 yrs were 38-8-2 with 2 SEC championships. How does that compare with fulmer's last 4?

Having said that in retrospect yes it was a mistake to fire fulmer but worst ever? Good lord have some perspective. Maybe harboring and protecting a pedophile f decades MIGHT be worse. Hyperbole much?

The only thing I got from your post is that you're too lazy to type out "for"

Now lay in it.

This is the lowest point in Tennessee football.

Congratulations. Anyone that says anything bad about Fulmer has revealed their idiocy.

Treat them acordingly.

You just proved you don't know Jack S_hit! Fulmer should have been fired 5 years before they finally canned him. The fact that the UT's administration can't or won't hire the right coach isn't your fault or our fault.

Is that you Phil?

I wanted him gone but certainly not 5 years before.

NOPE.

The mistake was hiring Kiffin instead of Brian Kelly or Gary Patterson, and giving Kiffin a little buyout with reckless disregard of what it could mean if Carroll left for the NFL.

Nice try, but NO.

Considering Phil was canned 10 months after taking us to the SECCG, your short sighted view of the Vols shows your lack of football and logic in general. Admit you were wrong or continue to look like the idiot that doesn't know he's an idiot

Bumped for morons like Fade_route.

Dude had such a big mouth when Fulmer was struggling.

Where’s this guy’s plan?

Guys like faderoute are the reason we literally just had the worst season ever.

Thanks Faderoute.

No, that wasn't the problem, either. It was Hamilton not structuring the contract properly.

Then of course, just a string of bad luck. Jim Mora Jr pops off about taking the UCLA job and getting fired at Seattle, then in turn Seattle hires Pete Carrol, then USC goes through 5 names at the top of their list before calling Kiffin.

So someone explain to me how much better we are without Fulmer. What exactly has happened since his firing?

Tennessee football has descended into the crapper.
We can't get a sniff from a legitimate coach.
Our "fanbase" has become as much of running joke as the football program has.

In summary, we are very horribly more worse off than we were with a coach who had 15 winning seasons out of 17 & won our only National Title since the 50's.

The mistake was hiring Mike Hamilton when Dickey retired . That is when our program started down hill .

Fulmer didn't deserve to be fired mid season like he was. It was ridiculous & embarrassing (much like the current iteration of UT football). The good coaches around the country took notice. Why coach at a place that ran off it's own homegrown champion in such a terrible manner? Whomever made the decision didn't even have a plan in place. He just caved under the pressure of incessant caterwauling from the "fanbase" and a knee jerk reaction ensued. Looks like it's about to happen again. Unless Currie absolutely nails this hire. I'm skeptical a best, but well soon find out.

Ding ding, winner. Set us back big time. He actually hired back to back coaches with losing records

Hired a baseball coach from Western Carolina
